Advanced Optics Using Aspherical ElementsEditors: Bernhard Braunecker, Rudiger Hentschel, Hans J. Tiziani

Modern optical systems rely on leading-edge production technologies, especially

when using aspherical optical elements. Dueto the inherent complexity of aspheres, allefforts to push the technological limits arerisky. Thus, to minimize risk, clear decisionsbased on a good understanding of technologyare indispensable.

This compendium is written as an opticaltechnology reference book for developmentand production engineers. With contributionsfrom renowned experts, this book aids inmitigating the risk in adopting new asphereproduction technologies.

“Camera Lenses is an instant classic, as botha valuable technical resource and a fascinatingread for the optical engineer.”

—Dr. Kenneth Moore, President of ZEMAXDevelopment Corporation

This book is an exploration and appreciationof cameras and their optics, covering all

major lens types from the earliest to the mostrecent—including those roving the surface ofMars. A recurrent theme of this book is thatlens types invented in the 19th century are justas useful in the 21st century. Anothercontinuing theme is the impact of the digitalrevolution and the use of imaging in radicallynew circumstances. This book should be ofinterest to any who are curious and want toknow more about the glass on the front oftheir cameras.

Made available incooperation withPrometheus Books.

A revolution in the way we use artificiallighting is underway, one that is every bit

as sweeping and significant as Edison’sinvention of the light bulb. The technology oflight emitting diodes (LEDs) is ready forwidespread implementation. Its impacts willinclude a reduction in energy consumption forelectric lighting by up to 80 percent.

Brilliant! tells the story of Shuji Nakamura, agifted Japanese engineer who came out ofnowhere to stun the world with hisannouncement that he had created the lastpiece in the puzzle needed for manufacturingsolid state white lights. The invention of thisholy-grail product, which promises to makeEdison’s light bulb obsolete, had eluded thebest minds at the top electronic firms for 25years. Until his startling announcement,Nakamura had not even been on the radarscreen of most industry observers.

Introduction to Image Stabilizationby Scott W. Teare, Sergio R. Restaino

TT73Sep. 2006112 pagesSoftcoverISBN: 9780819464347

SPIE Member $39List Price $47

This text provides the basics of imagestabilization starting with a consideration

of the cause of image blurring and anintroduction to the components commonlyused in constructing a stabilized imagingsystem. With this foundation, an exampleimage stabilized system is described andused to introduce some of the importantparameters in evaluating the performance ofimage-stabilization systems. As imagestabilization systems are key components ofadaptive optics systems, the moresophisticated sensing and correction devicesused in this area are briefly addressed. Ratherthan being a mathematical, rigorous treatmentof image stabilization, this book provides thebasic ideas in an easy-to-read format.

The Physics and Engineering of Solid State Lasersby Yehoshua Y. Kalisky

TT71Mar. 2006222 pagesSoftcoverISBN: 9780819460943

SPIE Members $46List Price $56

This text explains the mutual influencesbetween the physical and dynamic

processes in solids and their lasing properties. It provides insight into the physics andengineering of solid state lasers by integratinginformation from several disciplines, includingsolid state physics, materials science, photophysics, and dynamic processes insolids. The text discusses approaches todeveloping new laser materials and includesdata tables of basic parameters that can beapplied to laser design. Novel materials andtechniques used in recent developments arealso covered.

One reviewer said,“This is excellent. [Chapter 6] on photophysicsis outstanding! Very well written and excellentequation derivation.”

This book provides you with a singlesource of information on the problem of

coherent-mode representations in optics, including new perspectives on its potentialapplications. In particular, the “light string”and the “light capillary” beams may beadvantageously used in communications, measurements, laser microtechnology, andmicrosurgery; application of the fast algorithmfor bilinear transforms can significantlyreduce the computer effort needed tosimulate optical systems with partiallycoherent illumination.

Field Guide to Polarizationby Edward CollettThe polarization of light is one of the mostremarkable phenomena in nature and has led tonumerous discoveries and applications. Thenature and mathematical formulation ofunpolarized light and partially polarized lightwere not readily forthcoming until the 1950s,when questions about polarized light and themathematical tools to deal with it began to beaddressed in earnest. As a result, there is a verygood understanding of polarized light today.

The primary objective of this Guide is to providean introduction to the developments in polarizedlight that have taken place over the past half-century and present the most salient topics ofthe subject matter such as Mueller matrices,Stokes polarization parameters, and Jonesmatrices.

Beginning with a description of thediffraction theory of image formation, thebook describes both aberration-free andaberrated imaging by optical systems withcircular, annular, or Gaussian pupils. As inpart I, the primary aberrations areemphasized. Their effects on Strehl,Hopkins, and Struve ratios are discussed indetail. The balanced aberrations areidentified with Zernike polynomialsappropriate for each type of system.Imaging in the presence of randomaberrations is also discussed, including theeffects of image motion and propagationthrough atmospheric turbulence. Eachchapter ends with a set of practicalproblems.
