‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ This Challenge must be read in conjunction with the current year’s Instruction Manual.

Introduction

Somewhere far, far away, an exciting new existence beckons… It offers adventure, excitement, change, freedom … and above all – hope!

The opportunity to live in ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ as Founding Members, and to help establish this new, alternative community is now being promoted by the HOPE Agency. Founding Members of ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ will be responsible for how the new community is established and managed.

Those selected must fit specific criteria set by the Agency.

You decide to apply in the hope that you fit the criteria and are lucky enough to be selected to become a founding member of ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’!

Challenge Your team must decide what the new ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ community is all about. You must also decide what the selection criteria is for becoming a Founding Member of ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’.

Specifically you must:

identify: o where ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ is situated; o what it is about the new community that is so enticing; and o how it is to be established and managed.

create four specific criteria for the selection process; and

identify some successful, and unsuccessful applicants.

Presentation

During your presentation your team must portray the events surrounding the establishment of the new ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ community.

Your presentation must:

demonstrate and explain: o where ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’ is situated; o what it is about the new community that is so enticing; and o how it is to be established and managed.

explain the four (4) specific selection criteria for becoming a Founding Member of ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’; and

show both successful and unsuccessful applicants.

Before you begin your presentation, your team must hand the Judges or Room Manager:

A list of your 4 selection criteria and required details of ‘Opti-STAR HOPE’.

3 copies of your script.

A completed copy of the electronic Team Form Suite.

Limitations - Refer also to those listed in the current year’s Instruction Manual:

1. The total time for setting up, performing your Challenge solution and clearing away is 10 minutes.

2. The Judges or Room Manager will indicate to your team when the performance time is to begin and when 9 minutes have elapsed. At 10 minutes your performance will be stopped. NO OVERTIME WILL BE ALLOWED.

3. A minimum of 4 team members must be within the performance area at all times.

4. The members who are performing must be visibly inside the 3 × 3 metre performance area.

5. Only items listed under ‘Allowable Materials’ may be used for costumes and props. Bonus Points will be awarded for the use of recycled materials and for evidence of sustainable thinking practice.

6. Safety precautions must be observed at all times.

7. Overall costs are limited to $50.00 in accordance with the current year’s Instruction Manual.

You will be awarded points according to the criteria set out in the Score Sheet included in this Challenge. READ IT THOROUGHLY. It is an exact copy of what the Judges will be using on the day.

The Opti-MINDS Director will provide

At the Presentation site: 1. A minimum of 2 Judges. Score sheets for the Judges. 2. A timing device for the Judges. 3. A defined stage or floor performance area of approximately 3 × 3 metres.

4. 2 chairs and a table which may be used in the performance. 5. An electrical outlet which will accept a three-prong plug for use in the performance.

*Your team may use standard equipment to construct props, costumes and apparatus, e.g. Scissors, hammers, screwdrivers, sewing machines, paint brushes etc. These items need not appear on the Cost Form. NOTE 1: Fabric or Food Dye may be used in your preparation but must not be brought in liquid form to Opti-MINDS venues

NOTE 2: Fabric (plain): means any fabric of any colour which has no design, pattern or embellishment that is created by someone outside of the team. The team may add any design,

pattern or embellishment using items from the list of Allowable Materials.

NOTE 3: Recycled Junk Material is specifically: Any material that any household would normally throw out in their garbage or recycling bin each week. For example: newspaper, cardboard, foam boxes, cotton reels, margarine containers, drink bottles, tops etc. It does not include things like Mum’s old evening dress, an old tennis racquet, fan or bike etc; nor does it include things like off cuts from the local stainless steel factory, appliance boxes and election booth boxes, etc. Materials purchased from second-hand shops and opportunity shops are not allowed under ‘Recycled Junk Materials’. NB: Large appliance boxes (cardboard) may be used in your presentation – however you must list the estimated value of the cardboard on your Cost Form as if you had bought it new. NOTE 4: Garden Refuse is specifically: any garden material that is clipped, cut, raked or dug from the garden.
