OPTA ARQUITECTOS S.L.P. is an interdisciplinary architecture design office based in Madrid. Taif is a big city in the southeast of Arabia, with over 1 million population. The city is already changing nowadays, turning into a major city in the region with many ongoing projects that will increase its population and economic relevance in KSA. Nowadays it has no public transport. A comprehen-sive transport plan was developed to study a new public transport system for the city (metro and bus). This new public service will bring fast, affordable and comfortable transportation for Taif city and its future urban developments.

Taif es una gran ciudad del sureste de Ara-bia, con más de 1 millón de habitantes. Es una ciudad en pleno cambio, con grandes proyectos urbanísticos en desarrollo que aumentarán su tamaño y relevancia en Arabia Saudi. No existe transporte públi-co de ningún tipo. Se ha desarrollado el estudio de un plan de transportes para la ciudad que incorpora un nuevo sistema de transporte público: metro y autobús. Este nuevo servicio público ofrecerá un medio de transporte rápido, económico y cómodo a la ciudad y a sus áreas de futuro desa-rrollo.

Intermediate Station in the high-speed rail-way between Antequera and Granada in the south of Spain. The protection require-ments of traveler’s flows through the plat-form and parking canopies led to a global covering concept that unifies the image of the complex. The large deck is also consid-ered a “Haima” that protects the station from extreme solar exposure of southern Spanish sun.

Estación intermedia de la línea de Alta Ve-locidad Antequera-Granada. Los requisitos de protección de los recorridos de los via-jeros mediante marquesinas en andenes y aparcamientos llevaron a una solución uni-taria de cubiertas que unifican la imagen de la Estación. Las fachadas exteriores de la estación se retranquean, de modo que la cubierta produce grandes aleros perime-trales de protección solar en un entorno árido y caluroso.

It’s an intermediate station on the high-speed railway between Madrid and Valla-dolid. Functionally it’s both a station and a railway tunnel control centre. The main building stands on a wide platform over the tracks, which run half-buried. A series of alabaster “light wells” drill the roof to introduce filtered natural light into the sta-tion.

Intermediate station on the high-speed line from Cordoba to Malaga. The tracks run on a higher level than the ground floor where passenger’s vehicles arrive, so the station is located adjacent to the railway platform, establishing a visual and spatial link between both levels. A large front-cover stands out from a dis-tance, under which all the functional pro-gram is developed.

Estación intermedia de la línea de Alta Ve-locidad Córdoba-Málaga. Las vías discurren a una cota superior a la de acceso de viaje-ros por lo que la estación se sitúa contigua a las mismas, estableciendo un nexo entre los accesos exteriores y los andenes. Se re-conoce como una gran fachada-cubierta, bajo la cual se albergan las distintas estan-cias y accesos de la estación.

Partial renovation of a Shopping Mall in the town of Fuenlabrada. The renovation affects to its facades and to the inside mall distribution. We decided to concen-trate the external intervention in the main entrance facade, which is the building´s image from the access road nearby. The project decided to preserve the existing façade as a structural support for a new lightweight outer cladding.

Remodelación parcial de un Centro Co-mercial en el casco urbano de Fuenlabrada para producir un cambio de imagen exte-rior del edificio y la reordenación interior del mall y sus locales adyacentes. Se con-centra la intervención en el acceso prin-cipal. Se tomó la fachada existente como soporte base para un nuevo revestimiento exterior ligero.

The project proposes creating two levels, a lower commercial façade facing to the main access road and a pedestrian plaza on a higher level. The vehicles access to the building is driven to the site’s perimeter so as not to interfere with the pedestrian circulation. Facing to the main road, the building curves its facade. A large canopy differentiates the two main levels of the complex.

Se plantea un frente de locales comer-ciales a la calle y a un nivel superior una plaza peatonal central alrededor de la cual se disponen otros locales. Los accesos ro-dados no interfieren en las circulaciones peatonales. En el lindero este el edificio se asoma con una fachada curva y una mar-quesina diferencia las dos plantas principa-les de la actuación.

The building extends its limits with a large curved facade that seems to go along with the passing traffic nearby. Most of the frag-mented volume is crowned by a curved canopy that unifies its image. At dawn, the building inner lights start to lit showing its inside activity.

La edificación se extiende con una gran fa-chada curva que acompaña al devenir del tráfico. Una marquesina curva corona la fachada principal en gran parte de su desa-rrollo. Al atardecer el edificio se ilumina y la fachada vítrea muestra la actividad inte-rior del conjunto.

A commercial building that houses two symmetrical large premises (> 2,000 m2). Therefore, the project is a hybrid between a commercial building and an industrial warehouse, so it had to combine simplic-ity, speed of execution and low cost with a commercial and good looking image. The glass front facade, increases its share as the glass overlooks to the main façade.

Edificio comercial destinado a albergar dos únicos locales comerciales iguales y de gran tamaño (>2.000 m2). Se trata de un híbrido entre un edificio comercial y una nave industrial, por lo que debía contem-plar sencillez, rapidez de ejecución y eco-nomía de medios. Los acristalamientos se recortan de forma escalonada conforme a la sucesión espacial del interior de los lo-cales, aumentando su parte vítrea según se asoman a la fachada principal.

Commercial building. The main project constraints were the triangular shape of the plot and the need of sheltering a large and varied number of premises, includ-ing a large supermarket, all situated on the ground floor. Some have upper decks to allow outdoor private terraces. A large thin canopy tops off the different upper volumes, offering a unified image of the building’s perimeter.

Edificio comercial en Fuenlabrada. Los principales condicionantes fueron la forma triangular de la parcela y la necesidad de incorporar gran numero de locales, todos ellos exteriores. Las fachadas intentan ofrecer una imagen unitaria a una distribu-ción en planta heterogénea. Una gran mar-quesina corona el edificio, sostenida por tres grandes pilares en las esquinas.

The project emerged as an apparently simple cubic blue glass volume resting on a stone basement that invades the plot. It has a central covered patio, which brings in natural light and serves as a climate regula-tor. A structural grid of 10x10m guarantees open floor plans that can be easily subdi-vided.

Edificio de volumetría sencilla y rotunda, un prisma acristalado cúbico, tecnológico, sobre un basamento de piedra autóctona. Tiene un gran patio central cubierto, que ilumina y hace de regulador climático. Una malla estructural de 10x10m ofrece plan-tas diáfanas fácilmente subdivisibles.

The project is the transformation of an old 1940 elder’s residence into a modern of-fice building. This meant that the building should no longer look like a residence too. The new added floor is conceived as a large observation deck that overlooks the forest nearby and Madrid’s skyline, thanks to its cantilevered roof that provides the ad-equate sun protection. All the site works were done with the office running.

Transformación de una antigua residencia de 1940 en un edificio de oficinas median-te un cambio de uso y ampliación en altura.La planta añadida se configura como un gran mirador que se asoma a un bosque adyacente bajo el amparo de unos gran-des aleros de protección solar. “In Andalusia, direct sun is like bad weather”. This porject develops a compact building, with a double cladding to protect the most exposed façade (west) and allow bioclimatic regulation, offering a protec-tion equivalent to the one offered by the business starter to its dwellers.

Es un edificio compacto, con un elemento propio de protección: una la celosía permeable y tamizante del sol que ocupa todo el frente de la orientación más expuesta del edifici o y permite una regulación bioclimática de la fachada. Protección equivalente a la que ofrece la incubadora a las nuevas empre-sas allí alojadas.

This project includes a Public Sports Center & Surf School in front of “Las Canteras” beach, in an existing site in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. All the building had to be developed underground, with its roofs at ground level, to become public space too. The new building had to include a direct access to the beach. In some way, this project is not only a building but a por-tion of city dedicated to leisure, sport and beach entertainment.

Es el proyecto de un centro deportivo público frente a la playa de “Las Canteras”, en una parcela existente de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. El edificio debía ser subter-ráneo, con su cubierta a nivel de calle para ser utilizada como zona pública. El nuevo edificio tenía que incluir un acceso directo a la playa. En cierto modo, este proyecto no es sólo un edificio, sino una parte de la ciudad dedicada al ocio, al deporte y al dis-frute de la playa.

The building is conceived as a square base, solved on a single floor. It is embedded into the ground, leaving its flat roof pro-trude over the ground floor like a plinth. From this solid base, some bodies emerge with different heights, according to the main uses of the complex, from which the auditorium volume is highlighted. A large central patio allows natural light inside to illuminate the main floor, so all the activity gravitates around it. The complex is topped with a flat roof; a still water layer that acts as a bioclimatic regulator.

El edificio se concibe como un cuerpo de base cuadrada que se empotra en el te-rreno, dejando visto al exterior un zócalo que encierra una lámina de agua, desde la que emergen diferentes cuerpos de edi-ficación, correspondientes a los espacios de usos principales, de los cuales destaca el volumen del Auditorio. Un gran patio central permite iluminar con luz natural la planta al gravitar alrededor del mismo toda la actividad.

First prize in an open competition. The proposal takes into account the complexity of the program. The existence of three dif-ferent activities together (accommodation, research and visitors) with a great degree of interaction between them. Three sepa-rate buildings that share the same base which absorbs the slope of the plot and hosts a series of interconnected spaces, seating areas, lobbies, restaurants.... as well as storage rooms and facilities.

Primer premio en concurso público. La pro-puesta toma como base la complejidad del programa de usos. La presencia de tres ac-tividades claramente diferenciadas entre sí (docencia, convenciones y hostelería). Tres edificios independientes comparten un ba-samento común que absorbe el marcado desnivel de la parcela y alberga una serie de espacios de interconexión: áreas de descanso, vestíbulos, comercio, así como almacenes e instalaciones.

The project was made to replace an exist-ing industrial building with new housing, so this building became part of a new resi-dential complex. In its new use the listed building is intended for two outstanding houses and a large common sports hall. The building was the former “Ball Hall” of Carabanchel, where locals used to go danc-ing in the late 50’s, but now it had a signifi-cant deterioration, as part of an industrial textile complex.The project highlighted the value of the restored original wooden structure and its façades.

Se realizó un proyecto de sustitución de una edificación industrial existente con nuevas viviendas, por lo que este edificio se integró en el nuevo complejo residen-cial. En su nuevo uso, el edificio está desti-nado a dos viviendas independientes y una gran sala de deportes común. El edificio fue la antigua “Sala de Baile” de Carabanchel que los locales utilizaban para ir a bailar a finales de los años 50, del siglo pasado, pero en la actualidad se encontra-ba en un estado de deterioro significativo, como parte de un complejo industrial.El proyecto busca enfatizar el entramado de madera original restaurado.

The new building must host general me-dical assistance for non-accommodation patients and a small emergencies 24/7 area. The plan scheme gravitates around a central patio that brings in natural light and ventilation to all the floors, even to the un-derground parking. Outside, the building is shown as a single cubic volume with a continuous façade cladding made of grilled precast panels, a “bandage”.

Edificio de volúmenes sencillos que se arti-cula a través de un núcleo de comunicacio-nes verticales y un patio interior, en torno al que se despliega toda la actividad. El patio proporciona luz natural, distribución de las áreas funcionales y un jardín interior. Se proyecta una doble fachada de celosía, que constituye un elemento protector e integrador del edificio, que recuerda al bendaje sanitario.

It’s a two storey building, set in a comb scheme, with a longitudinal main body, hosting facilities and services and a se-ries of perpendicular wings, separated by courtyards, which shelter the extensive program. Circulations are grouped in two different categories, one for medical staff and other for patients and visitors.

Edificio de dos plantas, configurado en es-quema de peine. Desde el cuerpo de insta-laciones, se da servicio a cada uno de los brazos donde están las áreas asistenciales y no asistenciales. Hay cuatro cuerpos de edificación separados por patios y entrela-zados entre sí mediante dos circulaciones diferenciadas, una para personal sanitario y otra para pacientes y familiares.

Architect since 1975 by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (M. Sc Arch.)He has accomplished Postgraduate courses on Business Planning, Town Planning, Property development, urban management, financial development evaluation. Teaching experience in the Buen Retiro School of Design and former member of the Supervisory Board of COAM.Licensed Architect since 1975. In 1979 he made the first Shopping Mall in Spain, to be followed by many projects and works of major shopping Malls (souks), business and office complexes, movie theaters and residential projects, all in different geographical locations. Cofounder of ARQUIDI Design Group, doing work for RENFE and Juan de la Cierva Institute. He was selected for the Gold Delta Awards ADI-FAD (Barcelona) and Ibiza Art Biennial. Co-founder of the Industrial Design Department of EUSA. His furniture design work was shown at the Exhibition of wooden furniture in Valencia Furniture Fair.

Arquitecto desde 1975 por la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid.Ha realizado numerosos Cursos de Postgrado (Urbanismo Comercial, Disciplina Urbanística, Promoción inmobiliaria, Gestión Urba-nística, Evaluación Financiera de promociones etc.)Docencia en la Escuela de Diseño Buen Retiro y antiguo miembro de la Comisión de Control del C.O.A.M. Arquitecto colegiado desde 1975. En 1979 realiza el Primer Centro Comercial de España, al que seguirán numerosos proyectos y obras de Centros Comerciales, complejos empresariales y de oficinas, salas de cines y proyectos residenciales, en diversas zonas geográficas españolas.Cofundador del Grupo de diseño ARQUIDI, realizando trabajos para RENFE e Instituto Juan de la Cierva. Seleccionado para los Premios Delta de oro del ADI-FAD (Barcelona). Cofundador del Departamento de Diseño Industrial EUSA, cuya obra de diseño de mobiliario fue mostrada en la Feria del Mueble de Valencia.

Juan Ramírez Sanz

Architect since 1999 by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (M. Sc. Arch.) Master in Advanced Studies in 2002. He is currently researching on his PhD Thesis. He has been awarded with fellowships by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo for seminars and workshops on architecture. He has accomplished postgra-duate courses at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Architects Association.He has been faculty at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca UPSAM School of Architecture (2007-2013). He has been lecturer in Architecture Forums and Conferences. Licensed Architect since 1999. His work includes buildings of various types and scales. Noteworthy is his experience in singular projects such as Railway Stations, Shopping Malls and Offices, some of them internationally awarded.

Leticia Izquierdo Lahuerta

Architect since 2001 by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (M. Sc. Arch.) In 1997 she obtained a training fellowship in INTEMAC’s Quality Control department. Fellowship by the Architects Association of Madrid in 2002. Master in “Con-servation and Restoration of Architectural and Urban Heritage” at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 2003. Licensed Architect since 2001. She has worked in prestigious architectural firms such as 3G-OFFICE, A.Ordás and ARQUIVIO de-veloping Civic, Offices and Residential projects and competitions. Between 2003 and 2005, she worked at ÁRGOLA Arquitectos, specializing in Healthcare architecture, such as the award winning project for the El Escorial Hospital extension.She has accomplished postgraduate courses at the Universidad Politécnica and the Architects Association de Madrid.In 2006 she joined OPTA as a Senior Architect and project leader. Her experience ranges from Project development, Site supervision, and Competitions to 3D Modelling and renderings.

Arquitecta desde 2001 por la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid.En 1997 obtiene una beca de formación en INTEMAC en el departamento de Control de Calidad de la Edificación.Becada en 2002 por el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid, en 2003 obtiene el Master en “Conservación y Restauración del Patrimonio Arquitectónico y Urbano” en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Arquitecta colegiada desde 2001. Ha colaborado en prestigiosos estudios de Arquitectura tales como 3G-OFFICE, A.Ordás y ARQUI-VIO desarrollando proyectos y concursos, en el área Dotacional y terciario, Oficinas y Residencial. Entre 2003 y 2005, colabora con ÁRGOLA Arquitectos en la redacción de proyectos de arquitectura Hospitalaria, algunos de ellos fruto de concursos premiados tales como la Ampliación y Reforma del Hospital de El Escorial.Ha realizado cursos de postgrado en la Universidad Politécnica y el colegio de Arquitectos de Madrid.En 2006 se incorpora a OPTA arquitectos, especializándose en la redacción y desarrolo de Proyectos , Dirección de Obra, Concursos, Modelado tridimensional y representación Infográfica.

Daniel Martín Cuesta

Building Engineer since 2003 by the Escuela Universitaria de Arquitectura Técnica de Madrid.He has accomplished post-graduate courses in C.O.A.A.T. in areas such as On-site managing, Health & Safety, Quality Control, site economic management and sustainability assessment.Licensed Quantity Surveyor since 2003. Between 2003 and 2004 he worked in TIFSA INECO Engineering Company, collaborating in High Speed Architecture Projects such as Puente Genil, Olmedo, Segovia and Perafort.Between 2004 and 2005 he implemented the Phase 2 works in Zaragoza High Speed Railway Station, as responsible for site super-vision. In 2005 he joins OPTA. He is a Senior Building Engineer and Technical Manager of budget control, sustainability and site supervision.

Arquitecto Técnico desde 2003 por la Escuela Universitaria de Arquitectura Técnica de Madrid.Ha realizado cursos de Postgrado en el C.O.A.A.T. en materias tales como Dirección de Ejecución de Obras, Seguridad y Salud, Con-trol de Calidad, Gestión Económica de la Obra y Certificaciones energéticas Arquitecto Técnico colegiado desde 2003. Entre 2003 y 2004 trabaja en la ingeniería INECO-TIFSA colaborando en la realización de proyectos de Arquitectura de Estaciones de Alta Velocidad; Puente Genil, Olmedo, Segovia y Perafort. Entre 2004 y 2005 interviene en la 2ª fase de ejecución de la Estación de Alta Velocidad Zaragoza - Delicias (Zaragoza), en calidad de responsable de control de obra y personal de apoyo técnico del Gestor de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (GIF). Desde 2005 colabora con OPTA arquitectos. Es el responsable del control energético constructivo y económico de los proyectos así como de la Dirección de Ejecución de la Obra de los mismos.
