GENERAL CRITERIA FOR STEM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

• Relevant coursework and a strong academic performance.

• Most emphasize research and require lab experience

• Require candidates to be able to articulate professional goals/aspirations—sometimes even graduate school interests— very early in a student’s academic career.

• Many require research proposals to establish an affiliation.

• All require letters of recommendation from faculty who can speak directly to a student’s academic ability and potential AND connect it to the particular scholarship/program.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. Scholarships are awarded for one year, and can be renewed up to four years. Applicants must be enrolled – or accepted to enroll in an undergraduate program in the U.S.

ELIGIBILITYOpen to US citizens/permanent residents with a minimum 3.3 GPA and exceptional financial need.

BENEFITS• Up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable

living expenses • Paid research training at the NIH during the summer• Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation

Open to sophomores and juniors who intend to go to graduate school to pursue research careers in any of the STEM fields are eligible to be considered for nomination. Vanderbilt will select up to 4 candidates for nomination based upon faculty recommendations made in October.

Candidates must have a had significant research experience and be able to present a two-page essay on research they have done. They must be able to clearly detail how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal.

Students who plan to study medicine are NOT eligible UNLESS they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice.

Summer research opportunities for undergraduates to work with doctoral students at universities and top research institutions across Germany.

RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities & research institutes provide housing assistance.

The online database of projects opens in early December, and lists over 700 internships. The application deadline is typically in January.

DAAD RISE (Research in Science and Engineering)

Provides full funding for undergraduate and graduate students (including a stipend allowance, full tuition, book allowance, room and board and other normal educational expenses). Those selected must be able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories and willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD.

Participants may study or engage in research fieldwork away from the academic institution for which they receive funding upon prior written approval from the SMART Program Office.

The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics.

TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP

The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.

The Truman is a very competitive national scholarship. Each year, the Foundation reviews over 600 applications for our 60 to 65 Scholarships awarded annually. These 600 applications do not include the students who compete on their own campus for one of a school's four nominations.

Candidates must be interested in pursuing a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs.

BOREN SUMMER INITIATIVE for STEM students

PROVIDES up to $8,000 for summer study (minimum of 8 weeks) for students majoring in the STEM fields. STEM field majors may also apply for semester and year programs.

All students applying for Boren Scholarships are expected to have a significant language component as part of their proposed study abroad program. Although many STEM students choose study abroad programs that offer courses in STEM fields, that is not required.

NSF REU PROGRAMSNational Science Foundation (NSF) Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates

A REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants. A contact person and contact information is listed for each site.

Open to undergraduates who are Pell grant eligible who wish to study abroad program for at least 4 weeks and up to a full year in a program for which they can receive academic credit.

The program strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Students studying critical need languages are automatically considered for the Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement, which provides an additional $3,000 for a total possible award of $8,000.

GILMAN SCHOLARSHIP

Supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields. Students find their own lab/research supervisors and arrange the project as part of the application process.

Open to undergraduate (sophomore and above) and graduate students.

The ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship program provides a monthly scholarship of CHF 1,050 (approx. USD 1,000) for a period of 2 to 3 months (CHF 3,150 maximum), which covers a portion of the average student’s living costs.

In October 2000 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation donated $210 million to the University of Cambridge, establishing the Gates Cambridge Trust. This is the largest single donation to a UK university. The scholarship funds full-time graduate degree in any subject area at the University of Cambridge.

MATH FOR AMERICA TEACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Einstein and Goedel

Supports the early stage research endeavors of applied physical, biological, and engineering science students who possess the potential to change our world for the better by solving difficult, real-world problems.

College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply. Applicants must be willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.

Applications open in August.

The Ford Foundation Fellowship program offers awards at the Pre-doctoral, Dissertation and Post-doctoral levels. 

ELIGIBILITY:• Enrolled in/planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a

Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution• Superior academic achievement • Commitment to a career in teaching and research at the university level• Evidence of promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers• Prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Summer professional internships for recent graduates, Master and PhD students in the STEM fields. Provides a monthly scholarship of € 150 for undergraduates, € 250 for MA students and graduates and € 500 for PhD students, with an additional stipend of € 500 per month provided by the host company. Also includes € 800 for travel expenses. For those who plan to attend a language course in Germany, DAAD will cover 80 % of course-fees (max. € 500).

DAAD RISE PROFESSIONAL

DAAD STUDY SCHOLARSHIPSOpportunity for highly qualified individuals to do independent study in Germany or to complete a full Master's degree program at a German university. Open to graduating seniors, recent graduates and graduate students in all fields.

Open to students planning full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D.  Senior undergraduate and first-year doctoral students (at the time of application) in engineering and in the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences are eligible to apply.

Fellowship support is available for four years and must be renewed annually.  Please note: Students in the second year of their doctoral studies (at the time of application) are no longer eligible.

During the fellowship period, fellows are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students at an accredited U.S. college or university and conduct research in areas of interest to the DOE.  The summer should be spent conducting full-time research related to the completion of one's degree program, enrolled in classes or on a practicum assignment.

Majors area of study: Mathematics, Astrophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering, Physics.

DOE COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE RESEARCH GRANT

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is committed to increasing the number and quality of our nation's scientists and engineers, and towards this end, has awarded approximately 3,200 NDSEG fellowships since the program's inception 22 years ago.

NATIONAL DEFENSESCIENCE & ENGINEERING FELLOWSHIP

Applications are evaluated on the following : • Quality of proposed research/study. Demonstrated intellect, vision

and innovation. • Reasons why a stay in Australia is important to completion of the

research/study. • Explanation of how the research/study will benefit the U.S.

AUSTRALIAN-AMERICANFELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

BOREN FELLOWSHIPSfor STEM students

AWARD AMOUNTS: $12,000 for 12-24 weeks $20,000 for 25-36 weeks $24,000 for 37-52 weeks

Preference is given to applicants planning to spend an academic year or 6-12 months overseas; however, applicants proposing overseas programs of 3-6 months, especially those in the STEM fields are encouraged to apply.

FULBRIGHT GRANTSIN THE SCIENCES

• Chile: For Master’s-level or Ph.D. students to conduct study/research at specified Chilean universities. Some programs may not require a high level of Spanish proficiency, since much of the work at the Institutes is conducted in English.

• Indonesia: The Fulbright Indonesia Research, Science & Technology (FIRST) Awards provide scholarships for Americans to study, teach, and conduct research in priority science and technology fields.

• Netherlands: For Ph.D. level candidates in the fields of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics or Physics; the NAF/Fulbright Fellowship for Childhood Cancer Research provides a grant for a post-M.D. or Ph.D. in oncology.

FULBRIGHT FOGARTY FELLOWSHIPIN PUBLIC HEALTH

Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health are offered in a partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health have been established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings. Interested candidates are urged to be in touch with the site contact in the appropriate country for information.

CENTRAL EUROPE SUMMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CESRI)

With support from the NSF and DAAD CESRI provides 8 U.S. graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a high-quality international research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia.

Two (2) CESRI grants are funded by DAAD and are specifically for CESRI Fellowships to Germany. The remaining six (6) CESRI grants are funded by NSF for the entire Central Europe region, with preference for grants to countries other than Germany.

The CESRI program will be 8 weeks in length, with the first 4 days spent as a group in Budapest, Hungary in a specially designed cultural and academic orientation to the region. Participants will spend the remaining 7.5 weeks working in individually-arranged placements in university labs or other appropriate sites where they can participate in creative research activities under the supervision of European mentors.

BENEFITS: Fellowship award of $2,000; Round-trip international airfare to Central Europe; Living costs (room and board) for 8 weeks; Insurance .

DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP One year stipend in the amount of $21,000 tenable at any U.S. institution of higher education offering a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree in the eligible fields of study.
