Algal Biomass Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Dr. Loretta Roberson

The UPR Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainability (CRES), funded by grants from the US Department of Defense (DoD) and the US Department of Education (USDE), supports highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research in the area of algae-based biofuels and represents a major new tool for teaching students in the College of Natural Sciences about core concepts and principles in the field of renewable energy and sustainability. CRES has been a collaborator with the Chemical Engineering Department

The Center for Renewable Energy has four broad research areas:

• Algal Biomass Production• Conversion of Algal Biomass into Biogas by Anaerobic Digestion• Thermochemical Conversion of Algal Biomass into a Liquid Fuel• Analysis of the Technology Transfer Potential and Financial Feasibility for each of

the Broad Research Areas
