DECONTAMINATION TERMINOLOGY

Understanding basic salon decontamination terminology will

help you to choose the right products to provide your clients

with a healthy, clean environment. Sanitizing, disinfecting

and sterilizing are all methods of decontamination.

DISINFECTION Highest practical level of decontamination possible for implements and the salon

environment. Kills microorganisms capable of causing infection on non-living surfaces.

Disinfectants should not be used on the skin, nails or any part of the body.

STERILIZATIONOptional, but not necessary in a salon environment. Destruction of ALL

living organisms on an object or non-living surface. It is physically impossible

to sterilize the skin, but implements can be sterilized. Sterilization is often

performed in medical offices.

Protect your client’s health and your own, by following good salon hygiene.

Reassure your client’s safety by

communicating sanitation steps

in services and salon environment.

OPI’s aim is to help nail professionals by providing

guidance. Please note this guide has been developed

by OPI together with education and hygiene specialists.

This aims to share recommendations to prepare the nail

salons reopening post COVID19. However, these are not

Government guidelines and OPI always recommends that

Government guidelines are followed. We invite salons to

check regularly local Government websites.

SANITATION Basic level of decontamination. Reduces the number

of harmful organisms to a safe level. An antiseptic is a

sanitizing agent that can be applied to the skin and nails.

STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CLIENTS

· Inform your clients via email, social media or phone

about the reopening of your salons and start booking

the appointments.

· Update them about the new rules put in place in advance in

order to reassure them.

SALON ENTRANCE

· Place the OPI poster on your window on your diligence in

practicing proper infection control.

· Place a hand sanitizer dispenser for every client walking in.

RECEPTION AND RETAIL AREA

· Discard magazines and non-essentials materials in the

waiting area.

· Ensure there is enough space in between 2 chairs in the

waiting area. If not possible, organize a waiting zone

outside, using tape on the floor.

· Wipe off all soft surfaces (sofa, couches… etc.) with a clean

towel and water.

· Clean and disinfect all hard surface after each usage such as

reception, cashier, payment terminal after each use, com-

puter, door handle, keyboards, phones, light switch and

point of sales equipments, shelving, glass, displays, cases

and keep products container clean and dust free.

· Consider online booking instead of written appointment.

This will enable you to avoid having to answer to the

phone during an appointment and sanitize again all tools

as you get back to the working station with your client.

RESTROOMS

· Clean and disinfect all surfaces.

· Replace any soft goods (paper, towels…etc.)

· Consider upgrading touch less faucets, soap, paper, hand

sanitizer, trash container.

· Remove all items that don’t belong to the restroom.

(no storage in the restroom)

PRIOR TO THE REOPENING

· 1 week prior to the reopening clean and disinfect your salon.

· Throw away open products that might be contaminated and

non-essentials materials such as magazines.

· Clean soft surfaces and disinfect hard surfaces.

· Reorganize your salon to follow social distancing rules.

(in the waiting area between clients and between working stations)

· Stagger the appointments with your clients throughout the day to reduce the number of

people at the same time in the salon and consider adapting the opening hours. A wider

opening time could enable you to see more clients in the day while reducing the number

of people at the same time in the salon.

· Consider additional time between appointments to allow for the correct cleaning of all the

tools and working station.

· Consider dedicating first opening hour for people “at risk” once the salon has been sanitized

and when the traffic is less important.

· Organize your staff into teams to allow rotation & also organize staff break rotation in the

break room to minimize the number of people in one room at the same time.

non-essential contacts.
