Unpack the ULTRA Mk3 and check all parts for any damage. Dispose of the packaging
materials and read the instruction manual carefully. The ULTRA Mk3 machine is delivered
pre-assembled. One part consists of the base, on which the chain guide is located. The
other part is a bearing arm with the motor and handgrip.
The assembly should be preformed with the ULTRA
Mk3 unplugged!!
The ULTRA Mk3’s design provides either for a bench
installation or wall mounting. When installing it on to a
bench, put the ULTRA Mk3 on the edge of the bench to stop
(Fig 1) and screw it to the bench using the holes in the base.
When mounting on the wall, use the respective holes in the
vertical part of the base (here, a distance from the wall
should be kept or spacers should be used for the access to
the rear set screw to be preserved).
TIP: When mounting on the wall, take care to mount
the ULTRA Mk3 at a height of 120 -130 cm from the
floor to avoid working at eye level.
After the bench top installation, fit the arm in the base
inserting the pilot pin and securing it with a hexagonal
screw (Fig 2).
Now, it is possible to fit the rear side screw and screw the
setting and screw the setting wheel on (Fig 3).
Screw the supporting arm control holder with the screw in
the grinding disk body.
Fit the grinding disk enclosure on using the supplied screws
and respective wrench (Fig 5).
To be able to install the grinding disk, it is necessary to
unscrew the auxiliary flange (Fig 6).

WARNING: Before connecting the machine to the mains power, make
sure the machine is switched ‘OFF’ to avoid unintended starting!
1. Inspect the chain for the most worn-out cutter tooth and start sharpening with this
tooth. The most worn-out tooth is important in order to sharpen all other teeth to the
same depth!
2. Lift up the chain stop.
3. Check the necessary angle according to
the specifications for the chain (see table).
Adjust the top plate cutting angle (F) to
60° - 50° and retighten fixing screw.
4. Adjust the filing angle on the chain holder
assembly to 25° - 35° or to the required
angle and tighten the adjustment screw
for the vice angle.
5. Tighten the chain between the metal guide boards using
lever (B). Fold down the chain stop and pull back the first
cutter tooth against the chain stop.
6. Check the alignment is correct. Using the handle pull
down the grinding wheel to meet the cutter tooth. For
fine adjustment of the chain position use the chain stop
adjustment screw (E). If the position is correct, fix the
position with the locking screw. Fine adjustment of the
chain stop has to be made with the lateral adjustment
screw.
7. If necessary the distance of the guide boards can be adjusted with the set screw (A).
By doing this the chain will be securely fixed in position while using the fastening
lever. Make sure the chain is between both guide boards. Both guide boards have to
be so closely connected that the chain can not tilt to the side.

8. Adjust the maximum sharpening depth
with the screw for depth stop (K), and fix
this position with the locking screw.
9. Some types of chainsaw chain require the
chain to be offset by angle of 10° when
sharpening (see table). Use cutting angle
setting wheel to adjust this angle to suit.
10. Switch ‘ON’ the ULTRA Mk3 by pressing
firmly. Use the handle to bring the
grinding wheel down towards the cutter tooth.
11. Once sharpened mark the first cutter tooth with chalk. Sharpen every second tooth in
one direction. Then change the cutting angle to 30° or to the need of the angle of the
opposite direction.
• DO NOT move the chain holder whilst the machine is in operation!
• Most chainsaws chains have a filing edge angle of 25° or
30°. The filing edge is usually printed on the package of
a new chain. If you do not know the exact filing angle of
the chain, it is normally sufficient to estimate by sight.
Position the grinding wheel as shown in the drawing.

To avoid malfunction, damage or injury always use a suitable grinding wheel that is in
good condition. Do not use a grinding wheel that is chipped, cracked, or worn. You can
check if the wheel has cracks not visible to the human eye by hanging it up by the
central hole and tapping it with a non-metal object (ie: screwdriver handle). If it is in
good condition it will produce a metallic sound. A dull sound indicates a crack or break.
Make sure before carrying out any work on the ULTRA Mk3 that the plug is disconnected
from the mains power.
Changing the Grinding Wheel
1. Switch off the machine and unplug from
the main power source.
2. Remove the grinding wheel protective
cover by unscrewing the 2 retaining
bolts with the allen key included.
3. Hold the grinding wheel firmly with one
hand and loosen the fixing nut with the
socket wrench.
4. Remove the old grinding wheel and
replace with a new one. Tighten the
fixing nut but do not over tighten - over tightening may cause the wheel to crack or
break. Only use grinding wheels with an outer diameter of 145mm and inner
diameter of 22mm. The grinding speed of replacement grinding wheel must meet or
exceed the RPM rating of the machine.
5. Remount the grinding wheel protective cover onto the machine. Never operate the
ULTRA Mk3 without the grinding wheel cover in place. Keep away from the wheel
when it is turning, and make sure no one is standing close, in the line of the wheel
rotation trajectory. If the grinding wheel vibrates on start up, turn off the machine
immediately and check that the grinding wheel is mounted securely!
6 Never try to stop the grinding wheel with your hands, even if you are wearing safety
gloves. The grinding wheel will cut through gloves and your hand, causing serious
injury.

Before beginning to sharpen a chain please carefully read the following hints:
• A chain consists of several cutter links,
drive links and tie straps. The cutter links
consist of the cutting tooth and the depth
gauge.
• The pitch of the chain is measured in
inches. The pitch is determined by
measuring the distance ‘A’ of the three
rivets and dividing by two. Example: 8.25
mm = .325”
• Example of a chain description: .325”/1.3
- 56. Where .325” stands for the chain
pitch, 1.3 mm stands for the width of
drive links, 56 stand for the number of
drive links.
• The top plate cutting angle is important in order to chisel out
wood fibres and lift them up and out of the kerf. For most
chains the top plate cutting angle has to be 60°.
• The filing angle will be reduced each time the chain is
sharpened. To ensure ultimate cutting performance, the depth gauge has to be
reduced too. The depth gauge setting in respect to the top plate is approximately
.025” = 0.64mm. Make sure that all depth gauges are the same.

• The filing angle must be equal for all cutting teeth. The angle has to be approximately
25° - 35° according to the chain type. The chain consists of left and right teeth.
• Sharpening teeth to unequal blade lengths can cause a side drift when sawing;
resulting in unwanted inclined saw cuts.
• Before you start to sharpen the chain carefully check it for damage, such as: bent or
broken drive links, broken cutter teeth, loose rivets or broken rivet heads. If any
damage is found, replace the whole chain or have the damage repaired by an
authorized service centre.
• Badly sharpened chains increase the risk of kickback.
• When the cutter teeth are reduced for more then 4mm the chain should not be used
any more and should be disposed of.
• A sharp chain when cutting properly will produce small chips of wood, but when a
chain becomes blunt fine saw dust will form during the cutting operation. You have to
sharpen the chain when you notice that excessive force is needed to cut through the
timber and the saw does not
“pull” anymore.
