Gun 4.5: visual inspection on 18.06.2018 Pictures taken from the cathode side using videoscope
• An attempt to touch and identify a ridge edge on the gun backplane
rounding was done: no tactile detectable edge was found.
• 2 leaves of the cathode spring more bended (?during inspection).
• Transition from flat wall to cylinder
• Flat wall of the Full cell
• RF coupler antenna

Operation issue of Gun4.2 PMT interlocks on the air side of the upper of the two THALES
windows.
WG2 inspection:
• all screws were tightened normally, flange was mounted normally.
• ceramics evenly brown, but okay. No dust or dirt on ceramics. Looks
normal.
• parts of the standard WG (PDR14) contact plane sits on stainless steel
(bad conductivity)
• Waveguide part with PDR14 flange also damaged
Visible contact problem / damage on windows flange is due to too
small copper metallization on THALES-WG flange. It is led to
material melting.
Different technique to connect flanges was used.
Latest tests with maximum peak power and RF pulse length of
200μs did not show problems anymore.

Gun 4.5 shows high dark current
The investigations showed that the dark current comes from the back plane of the gun
The visual inspection showed irregularities (scratches, varied machining steps etc.) at the cathode vicinity of
the Gun 4.5
The gun cavity was changed to Gun 4.2
The operation with the Gun 4.2 revealed problems with vacuum window flange
After reassembling short tests with high average power did not show problems at this place
The next plan is to operate the Gun 4.2 at 200us (enough for the experiments at PITZ)

13.06.2018 Start of shutdown
Gun4.5 endoscopic inspection (bucking solenoid was not moved, cathode holder was not dismounted)
o 14.06.2018 1st trial to make inspection (bellow, tube and valve were not dismounted): endoscope length was not
enough
o 18.06.2018 2nd attempt (bellow, tube and valve were dismounted): successfully finished. During the inspection the
pictures of the cathode vicinity and gun surface were taken. Additionally, an attempt to touch and identify a ridge
edge on the gun backplane rounding was done: no tactile detectable edge was found.
29.06.2018 begin of the cathode parts exchange:
o 02.07.2018 The cathode spring was exchanged (the cathode holder is the same)
o 02.07.2018 The z-Actuator was exchanged to brand new one (was backed, but vacuum was bad)
o 04.07.2018 The z-Actuator was exchanged back to previous (Problems with vacuum remained due to vacuum
chamber pollution by the brand new z-Actuator. Cycled heating was applied to overcome the problems.)
KW30 (23.-29.07.2018)
Measurements:
o from 24.07.2018 to 27.07.2018 Gun DC measurements
o 26.07.2018 the decision to exchange the gun was taken | Operation summary of Gun 4.5 and Gun 4.2 at PITZ | Igor Isaev | PITZ Collaboration Meeting | Zeuthen, 05.12.2018 |

the backplane edge. A sharp black ring around the edge is
clearly visible today, but not in original picture.
