What is the Operating Room Training Program?

• The program is a full-time, paid, six-month long orientation into the operating room (OR) that will focus on both theory and skill with supportive instructions, demonstrations and clinical experience necessary to actively scrub and circulate on a variety of surgical procedures.

• Monday through Friday day shift (hours are variable depending on the preceptor’s and surgery schedule) during the six-month orientation; 40- hour per week commitment. (No scheduled time off will be granted during the orientation due to the intensity of the program.)

• The program offers integrated learning experiences of classroom instruction, followed by hands-on clinical rotations in the OR department where the candidate is hired. Participants are exposed to both circulating and scrub roles, under the direction of experienced and skilled on-site preceptors.

• The program will utilize Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 curriculum.

When is the program offered?

• The OR training program is typically offered twice a year in January and June.

• Facility participation varies according to staffing needs at the Hancock Surgery Center, Indiana Surgery Centers and Community Hospitals Surgical Services departments at the time of interviews.

• Class size can vary between two and 12 people depending upon facility staffing needs.

Where is the program offered?

• ISC South has six OR suites and averages 20 cases per day.

• ISC Noblesville has four OR suites and averages 15 cases per day.

• ISC Kokomo has four OR suites; one procedure room and average 16 cases per day

• HSC has four OR suites and averages 25 cases per day

Outpatient Surgery Facilities:

VEI Manages six outpatient surgery centers. The Indiana Surgery Centers (ISC) have five locations, one on each of the Community Health Network campuses and locations in Noblesville and Kokomo. The Hancock Surgery Center (HSC) is located on the Hancock Regional Hospital Campus in Greenfield, Indiana.

Surgeries performed include orthopedic, gynecologic, ophthalmic, ENT, general, oral, podiatry, urologic, plastic, endoscopic, micro and laser.

•ISC North has nine OR suites and averages 45 cases per day.

•ISC East has six OR suites and averages 45 cases per day.

Where is the program offered?

Inpatient Surgery Facilities:• Community Health Network has three inpatient surgery departments in

Indianapolis — Community Hospital North, Community Hospital East, and Community Hospital South.

• Surgeries performed include orthopedic, neuro, gynecologic, ophthalmic, ENT, general, infertility, oral, podiatry, bariatric, thoracic and peripheral vascular.

• Community Hospital North has eight OR suites and averages 18 cases per day.

• Community Hospital East has six OR suites and averages 15 cases per day.

• Community Hospital South has four OR suites, two endoscopy rooms, and averages 16 cases per day.

What are the requirements for the program?

• Registered nurses with limited or no previous

surgical experience in the operating room. We

accept associate's and bachelor’s degrees from

NLN or CCNE accredited schools of nursing. A

new graduate may be interviewed prior to

completing the NCLEX exam and a contingency

offer may be extended contingent upon receipt of

RN licensure. RN licensure must be obtained

prior to the start date of the program.

• Selected applicants will be hired at one of the

participating Indiana Surgery Centers,

Community Hospital Surgical Services

departments or the Hancock Surgery Center.

• A two-year, signed commitment is required of

any candidate hired to participate in the program.

What type of training can you expect during the

program?

Classroom• Classroom lectures include - but are not limited to - aseptic technique,

prepping, gowning, gloving, instrument names, suture selection, laparoscopic procedures and draping.

• Candidates will attend core circulating and scrub classes throughout the six-month program.

• Lectures specific to each surgical department will occur at each specific site.

What type of training can you expect during the program?

Clinical Experience• The hands-on training portion of the

program occurs at the facility where the candidate is hired. This allows for a smooth transition into a regular surgery staff member.

• Circulating rotation for 11 weeks at the site where the candidate has been hired.

• Scrub rotation for 10 weeks at the site where the candidate has been hired.

What happens when the program is complete?

• Upon successful completion of the six-month long orientation, candidates will work as regular full-time staff members on surgical teams, actively scrubbing and circulating a variety of surgical procedures.

• Hours the candidate is hired will vary based on department needs but will most likely be, Monday-Friday, 5 days/week, 11am-7:30pm or 4 days/week 9am-7:30pm.  Taking call varies from facility to facility after the six month orientation.

• Due to the intensity and complexity of the program, participants need to allow two years to fully develop their skills in the operating room.

The OR Training Program is typically offered twice per year in January and June. Site participation is dependent upon facility staffing needs.
