Caring for the environment

Caring for the environment

Caring for the environment means sav-ing water, energy and detergent whenwashing. This machine is equippedwith the Hydromatic System and theBall Valve for economical use of re-sources. These systems offer a varietyof technical innovations e.g. the drumribs, which are designed to enableeconomical washing without compromi-sing on results.

The automatic load control facility en-ables loads of between 1 and 5 kg tobe washed using only as much waterand electricity as is required for an ef-fective wash.

Spinning at the high speed of1200 rpm reduces drying times and en-ergy consumption if laundry is dried ina tumble dryer after washing.

Economy tips

To help you wash most economically, remember the following tips:

Always wash with the maximumlaundry load specified for each pro-gramme. This uses the energy to thebest advantage.

Only use the correct amount of deter-gent required for the water hardnesslevel in your area, as recommendedby the manufacturer.

If laundry is not heavily stained, se-lect a lower temperature setting thanindicated on the laundry care label(but when using a lower temperaturedo not select the “short”-option).

Lightly soiled laundry can bewashed using a “short”-programme(additional temperature reductionnot recommended).

5

Before using for the first time

Important:the appliance must be properly in-stalled and connected to the waterand electricity supply according tolocal and national regulations.

For further information read the instruc-tions on pages 31 - 37

Check that the transit fitting at therear has been removed.

Before using for the first time primethe ball valve as follows:

Switch on the machine.

Turn the selector switch to “Starch”.

Once the drum starts turning: set theprogramme selector to “Drain”.

When the water has drained: turn theprogramme selector to the “Fin-ish/Start” position.

Switch the machine off.

The ball valve is operational.

Any residual lubricants and waterfrom testing still in the machineshould be flushed out as follows:

Do not load any laundry in the ma-chine.Add a little detergent to compart-ment j.Switch on the machine.Turn the programme selector switchto the “Cottons 60°C” programme.Press the “Short” button. The residues will have been flushedout once the programme has fin-ished.

Water hardness reminder.

The amount of detergent will dependon various factors including the waterhardness level in your area. Set thewater hardness dial located in thedetergent dispenser box as a reminder.

Turn the dial to the required setting.Use the spatula supplied with themachine. It is located at the rear ofthe dispenser drawer facia (seepage 23).

If you do not know how hard the wateris in your catchment area, please con-tact your local water authority.

Warning and Safety Instructions

This appliance is designed and in-tended only for normal household usein the U.K. It should never be operatedby children. Supervise its use by the el-derly or infirm.

Read the operating instructions throughbefore using this machine for the firsttime, as this is for your safety and theprotection of the machine. They givenotes on the safety, the use and themaintenance of the machine.

Further warning and safety instructionsare given in the text as appropriate.

...before using for the first time

Do not install your washing ma-chine in rooms where sub-zero

temperatures may occur. Frozen hosesmay burst under pressure. The reliability of the electronic controlsystem may be impaired at tempera-tures below freezing point.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit fit-

ting at the rear of the machine hasbeen removed (see page 31).During spinning, a transit fitting whichis still in position may result in damageto both the machine and adjacent furni-ture or appliances.

If the drain hose is attached to awash basin or sink, make sure it is

secure, (see illustration in the sec-tion“Guide to the machine”),so that the force of the water flowingout of the hose does not dislodge it, asthis will otherwise result in flooding. If hooking the hose into a wash basin, check that the water can drain off

quickly enough to prevent the sink fromoverflowing.

Keep these operating instructionsin a safe place.

...when using your machine

Only wash items which are de-clared by the manufacturer to be

machine-washable on the care label(textile care G.B. laundry care, AUS),(see Care labels on page 10).

Descaling agents contain acid.Only use proprietary non-corrosive

descaling agents and strictly observethe manufacturer’s instructions. Afterdescaling, always run several full rinsecycles to remove any acid residue andto protect component parts from corro-sion.

Never use detergents containingsolvents in this machine, as this

may result in damage to componentparts and create toxic fumes. Suchdetergents also pose a fire and explo-sion hazard.

Textiles which have been pre-treated in detergents containing

solvents must be thoroughly rinsed inclean water before being washed inthis machine.

Do not use dye removers as thesecontain sulphur compounds which

may damage washing machines.

7

Warning and Safety Instructions

Dyes must be specified as suitablefor use in washing machines. Al-

ways observe the manufacturer’s in-structions.

If washing at very high tempera-tures remember that the porthole

glass will be hot.Do not let children touch it during awash programme.

The machine should only be oper-ated unsupervised if there is a floor

drain in the immediate vicinity.

The best materials are used in themanufacture of this machine, and

every care is taken to check all parts. However, with time, deterioration ofparts can occur, especially with suchcomponents as hoses, giving rise toleaks. This should be borne in mind ifoperating the machine without supervi-sion. Check the hose regularly for signsof wear, and change in good time, toavoid leaks and subsequent damage.

Always make sure the drum is sta-tionary before reaching in to

remove washing. Reaching into a mov-ing drum is extremely dangerous.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips etc.) can cause dam-

age to textiles and components in themachine. Take care to empty allpockets etc. so that these do not gointo the machine.

...in the event of faults

Electrical appliances should onlybe repaired by suitably competent

personnel. Incorrectly repaired ma-chines may pose a considerable risk tothe user.

Disconnect the machine from themains power supply by switching

off at the wall socket, unplugging, orwithdrawing the mains fuse.

8

Preparing the wash load

Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips etc.) can cause dam-age to textiles and components inthe machine.

Sort the laundry

Most garments have a textile care labelin the collar or side seam. Sort thelaundry by care label symbols.Only wash items in this machine whichare declared by the manufacturer asbeing machine washable on the textilecare label.Dark textiles often contain“excessdye,” and should be washed separ-ately several times before being in-cluded in a mixed load.Delicate textiles should be washed sep-arately in a delicates programme.Only wash textiles made from wool orwool mixtures if they are declared asbeing suitable for machine washing onthe textile care label.

Pre-treating the washing

Badly soiled areas, e.g. collars andcuffs, and water soluble stains, can bepre-treated with bar soap, liquid deter-gent or detergent mixed into a solutionor paste. With particularly stubborn stains askyour Dry Cleaner for advice.Do not use detergents containing sol-vents in this machine.

Loading the drum

Unfold laundry and load loosely in thedrum. To achieve best results it is advis-able to make up mixed loads consist-ing of both large and small items. Thisimproves the washing effect and helpsdistribute the load evenly to keep themachine stable and reduce the noiselevel during spinning. It is advisable to weigh the load first tomake best use of the machine’s capac-ity.

Maximum load weights are notedbelow:

Adding detergent

All modern detergents produced forautomatic washing machines are suit-able, including liquid, compact (con-centrated) and special applicationdetergents. Use dispensing aids e.g.balls if these are supplied with thedetergent. Woollens and knitware con-taining wool mixtures should bewashed using a detergent specificallydesigned for washing woollens.

Add the right amount of detergent asrecommended on the packaging Theamount dispensed will depend on thefollowing:

– the quantity of laundry

– the water hardness level

– the level of soiling

It is important to dispense the cor-rect amount, because...

...too little detergent results in the follow-ing:

– The laundry will not get properlyclean and will in time become greyand hard to the touch.

– Greasy particles cling to the laundry.

– Lime deposits on the heater ele-ments.

...too much detergent results in the fol-lowing:

– Excessive foam.

– Low level of agitation.

– Poor washing and rinsing results.

Water is taken in through compartmentj in the main wash. If the capacity ofcompartment j is insufficient for theamount of detergent needed wherewater hardness is above 380 mg/l (inhardness area 4), the Customer Ser-vice Engineer can adjust the machineso that water can also be taken inthrough compartment i to take deter-gent into the main wash.

Water Softeners

A water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents in waterhardness ranges 2 - 4. Dispense ac-cording to the amount specified on thepackaging. First add detergent andthen the water softener. Detergent canbe dosed as for water hardness range1.

We recommend: if you wash using sev-eral components (e.g. special applica-tion detergents), dispense the agentsin the following order into compartmentj :

1. Detergent

2. Water softener

3. Stain salts

This way the agents are distributed bet-ter.

11

Fabric conditioners / starch formulations

Fabric conditioners make garmentssoft and fluffy to handle and help pre-vent static cling when tumble drying.Dispense according to the manufac-turer’s recommendations.

Open the lid of compartment p .

Add fabric conditioner, but do not ex-ceed the max. level.

Close the compartment lid and pushin the dispenser drawer.

The conditioner is automatically dis-pensed in the last rinse. At the end ofthe programme a small amount ofwater remains in the fabric conditionercompartment.

Texturiser and liquid starch formula-tions

These synthetic starch formulationsgive body to items e.g. shirts, table-cloths and bed linen. Add starch formu-lations to the fabric conditioner com-partment following the same procedureas for fabric conditioner.

Powder starch

Prepare and dispense the starch sol-ution in accordance with the manu-facturer’s instructions.

Add to compartment i .

Turn the programme selector switchto the “Starch” position.

If preferred select “rinse hold” to pre-vent creasing. The laundry remains sus-pended in the last rinse water.

To continue the programme:

Select “Drain” or “Spin”.

24

Cleaning and Care

The washing machine has two inlet filters toprotect the inlet valve:

To clean the filter in the inlet hose:

Close the stopcock.

Carefully unscrew the knurled coup-ling connecting the inlet hose to thestopcock anti-clockwise, using pliersif necessary.

Remove the rubber seal from the re-cess.

Using pointed pliers, take hold of theplastic filter bar and remove the filter.Clean under running water and care-fully remove any grit particles.

Put the filter and seal back in thereverse order and reconnect thehose. Turn on the stopcock andcheck the connection is watertight.

Inspect the inlet hose which is sub-jected to high pressure while the ma-chine is in operation. The hose shouldbe replaced if there are small cracks in

the surface, or if it has been otherwisedamaged.

If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose able to withstand pressure up to70 bar. Miele’s own hoses meet this re-quirement.

To clean the filter in the water inletvalve:

Using pliers, carefully loosen theribbed plastic nut on the inlet valve, and unscrew.

Use water pump pliers to withdrawthe plastic filter by the bar (see illus-tration). Clean and put back.

Check if the water flow through thestopcock is 5 litres in 15 seconds.

The filters in the inlet hose areclogged (see “Cleaning and Care”on page 25).

If little or no water is taken in during thenext programme, the water pressuremay be too low. If it is adequate theremay be a technical fault.. In this case, call your local service dealer or theMiele Service Department.

26

Problem solving guide

Despite adequate water supply press-ure, the machine takes a long time tofill.

Clean the filters in the water inlet sys-tem as described on page 25.

Large amounts of unused detergentremain in the dispenser drawer.

Water supply pressure is too low.

Clean the filters as described onpage 25.Select the “Water plus” function ifnecessary.

Washing powder becomes viscouswhen used together with a water sof-tener.

In future pour washing powder intothe detergent dispenser before ad-ding water softener.

Fabric conditioner is not completelydispensed or water remains in thecompartment p .

The dispenser drawer was openedwhile fabric conditioner was beingflushed in.

The siphon tube is either incorrectly po-sitioned or clogged. Clean as de-scribed on page 22.

Excessive build-up of foam

To avoid this problem from the outset, take note of the following points:

Follow the manufacturer’s dosagerecommendations on packagingcarefully.

Take the water hardness level into ac-count.

For lightly soiled articles or a smallload, reduce the amount of deter-gent accordingly.Pre-soaked items should be rinsedthoroughly before washing.

The “Pre-wash” indicator lamp isflashing.

Start the programme again. If the indicator still flashes call the Ser-vice Department.

The “Main wash” indicator lampflashes during, or after the end of aprogramme.

If this occurs again with the next pro-gramme there is a technical fault. Callthe Service Department.

Laundry is either not spun at all ornot spun satisfactorily.

The selected spin speed was too low.The machine was not able to distrib-ute the laundry load evenly. To pro-tect the machine, laundry was eitheronly spun at a reduced speed or notat all.Large items which tangle or roll up inthe drum (e.g. bath mats) can causean imbalance during the spin cycle. For safety reasons, the machinedoes not spin if this is the case. At-tempts to build up spin speed are re-peated, however, until the time allo-cated to spinning has expired. It is therefore important to make upmixed loads consisting of large andsmall items. The fluff filter may be clogged.Clean the filter and the pump as de-scribed on page 23-24.

27

Programme selection

The following basic programmes areavailable:

Cottons

Low water level for washing and rins-ing; 4 rinses; final spin max.1200 rpm.

Minimum iron

Low water level for washing, mediumwater level for rinsing; 3 rinses; finalspin max. 900 rpm.

Delicates

High water level for washing and rins-ing; 3 rinses; final spin max. 600 rpm.

Woollens

Medium water level for washing, higher water level for rinsing; 3rinses; final spin max. 900 rpm.Reduced drum movement.

By selecting one or more of the push-button functions basic programmescan be tailored to the type of laundrybeing washed.

“With pre-wash”

for heavily soiled and stainedlaundry items.

“Water plus”

This is recommended if the waterlevel with the “Gentle action” optionis not sufficient for particularly deli-cate fabrics,

if more water is required for dispens-ing the detergent,

for washing and rinsing cottons andminimum iron items,

for washing delicate items.

“Gentle action”

For gentle washing of slightly soiledlaundry items, e.g. delicate fabricswhich tend to pill (i.e. formknobbles). Drum movement is re-duced by half.

“Short”

For lightly soiled laundry items. Thelength of the main wash is short-ened. An additional reduction in tem-perature is not recommended as thismay lead to poorer washing results.

Selecting the spin speed

Set the selector switch to the highest appropriate setting to saveenergy if laundry is to be dried in thetumble drier. The spin speed in the“Minimum iron” and “Woollens” pro-grammes is automatically limited to900 rpm, and in the “Delicates” pro-gramme to 600 rpm.

“Rinse hold setting”

Laundry remains suspended inwater at the end of the programme. If the washing is to be spun, turn thespin speed selector from “Rinsehold” to the appropriate spin speed,or turn the programme selectorswitch to “Drain”.

13

Problem solving guide

The machine shakes during the spincycle.

The most likely cause is that the fourmachine feet are not resting securelyon the floor. Level the machine asshown on page 33.

Weak floorboards not only lead to ex-cessive noise but also to shaking dur-ing the spin cycle (see page 31 for ad-vice).

Lime deposits are visible on the sur-face of the drum.

Use a descaling agent to remove thedeposits. Consult the manufacturer’sinstructions before use to ensure thatthe product is suitable for use inwashing machines.Take the water hardness level into ac-count when dispensing detergent.

Opening the drum door in the eventof a power failure

Switch off the washing machine.

Open the drain panel and drain offany water as described on page 23if there is water still in the drum.

Pull the ring of the door mechanismdownwards, and the door will open.

Always make sure the drum is sta-tionary before reaching in to removewashing. Reaching into a movingdrum is extremely dangerous.

28

Problem solving guide

Grey greasy particles cling towashed laundry.

The wash load was heavily soiled withgreasy substances such as ointmentsor lotions, and the amount of detergentwas insufficient to break down the par-ticles of grease.

In future, either add up to 50% moredetergent to the main wash whenwashing loads of this nature or useliquid detergent in programmes upto 60°C.

Before washing the next load, run aCottons 60°C programme with liquiddetergent without a load to clean themachine.

Brown stains appear on the laundryafter washing.

An excessively high manganese or ironcontent in the water supply can causestains of this nature to appear on thelaundry, in particular when low-phos-phate detergent is used.

Have the quality of the water supplychecked and take remedial action ifnecessary.

After washing, knobbles (pilling) ap-pear on the fabric

In normal everyday wear of certain fab-rics pilling may occur. The Gentle ac-tion function should be selected whenwashing these fabrics, or another pro-gramme with higher water levels and re-duced agitation to lessen the risk of fur-ther pilling.

Laundry washed with liquid deter-gent is not cleaned.

Liquid detergent does not contain anybleaching agents capable of removingstains, e.g. fruit, coffee and tea stains.

To remove such stains, use ageneral-purpose washing powderwhich contains bleach or enzymes,or pre-treat laundry.

pour stain remover according tomanufacturer’s instructions into com-partment j of the detergent dispen-ser and dispense the liquid deter-gent directly using a proprietarydispensing aid.

Never pour stain remover and liquiddetergent into the same compartment.

29

Installation

Installation surface

Experience has shown that a concretefloor is the most suitable for a washingmachine. Concrete floors are far lessprone to vibration during the spin cyclethan wooden floorboards.

Please note the following points:

The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installation must be on a woodenjoist floor: we recommend the use ofa plywood base (at least59x52x3 cm). Ideally the baseshould be large enough to span sev-eral joists and should be bolted tothe joists and not just the floor-boards. Check for presence of pipesand cables first.

As a general rule, we recommendthe installation of the machine (orwasher/dryer stack) in the corner ofa room where the stablity of the flooris at its greatest.

If the machine is installed on a raisedplinth, it must be secured against slip-page during spin using retaining clips(available from the Miele Spare PartsDept).

Installation

Lift the machine from its packagingbase and move it to its site. Pleasenote:

Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor are dry to prevent the machinefrom slipping during the spin cycle.

Removing the transit fitting.

Using combination pliers, pull outthe retaining clips on the right andleft of the support plate.

Using a pipe wrench turn the left-hand transit bar 90° anti-clockwiseand the right-hand transit bar clock-wise.

31

COTTONS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5.0 kgMINIMUM IRON . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.5 kgDELICATES/SYNTHETICS . . . . . 1.0 kgWOOL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.0 kgQUICK WASH . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.5 kg

With curtains: Remove lead weightsand strips or place in a laundry bag.Woollens and knitted garments shouldbe turned inside out if the manufacturerrecommends it.

Close the drum door

Make sure that there is no obstructionbetween the drum door and seal.

9

Installation

Withdraw the two bars together withthe support plate.

Plug the two holes with the plasticcaps supplied.

The machine should not be moved with-out the transit fitting in place.

The transit fitting should be storedin a safe place for future use. Itmust be re-fitted if the machine is tobe moved again. Re-fitting is car-ried out by reversing the procedure.

5

Plumbing

Connection to water supply

The machine should be connected to amains water supply in accordance withstandard regulations. The German auth-orities do not require it to have a non-re-turn valve as the washing machine hasbeen designed to comply with DVGWregulations (German Association ofGas and Water Engineers, see dataplate).

Connection to a mains water supplyshould be carried out by a qualifiedplumber and should incorporate amains stopcock with 3/4" thread

The 1.5 m long 3/8" pressure hoseshould be connected to the stopcockvia the 3/4" threaded union.

This hose is not suitable for use for con-nection to a hot water supply. Pleasemake sure that the washer sits correctlyin the union.

If connection is to be made to a stop-cock with a short 3/4" thread, the extrawashers enclosed should also be in-serted in the inlet hose union to com-pensate.

The connection points are subject tomains water pressure. Turn on the stop-cock slowly and check for leaks. Cor-rect the positioning of the washers andscrew unions if appropriate.

If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose able to withstand pressure of upto 70 bar. This also applies to all fittingsused. Miele original parts fulfil this con-dition.

Longer hoses 2.5 or 4.0 m in length areavailable as optional extras.

The pressure hose and solenoid inletvalve are designed for a water flow-pressures of between 1 and 10 bar(981 kilonewtons/m2). At higher waterpressures it is essential to fit a reducervalve.

There is a minimum flow pressure of 1bar pressure if 5 litres of water flow intoa suitable container in 15 seconds.

The two dirt filters, one at the inletpoint, one in the pressure hoseunion, must not be removed.

36

Plumbing

Connection to drainage

The machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of one metre. Thehose must not be kinked as this re-stricts drainage. The hooked piece atthe end of the hose can be turned ineither direction.
