Correct use

Do not install the washing machine in a room where there is a riskof frost. Frozen hoses may burst or split. The reliability of theelectronic control unit may be impaired at temperatures belowfreezing point.

Before using the machine for the first time, check that the transitbars at the rear of the machine have been removed (see “Installation- Removing the transit bars”). During spinning, a transit bar which isstill in place may result in damage to both the machine and adjacentfurniture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if the machine is to be left for any length oftime (e.g. holiday), especially if there is no floor drain (gully) in theimmediate vicinity.

Flooding danger. If hooking the drain hose into a wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent the sink from overflowing. Makesure the drain hose is secure, so that the force of the water flowingout of the hose does not dislodge it.

Take care to ensure that foreign objects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper clips) do not find their way into the machine with the laundry. These may damage components of the machine (e.g. sudscontainer, drum), which in turn can result in damage to the laundry.

The maximum load for this washing machine is 8 kg (dry weight).See the “Programme chart” for the maximum recommended loadsfor individual programmes.

Energy and water consumption

– Water consumption and energyusage are determined by the size ofthe load.To make the most of your machine, load the maximum dry load for theprogramme you are using.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed, the automatic load controlwill reduce the amount of water andenergy used.

– Use the Express 20 programme forsmall, lightly soiled loads.

– Modern detergents make it possibleto wash at lower temperatures (e.g.20 °C). Washing using lowertemperature settings will save energy.

– To maintain the hygiene of themachine, carry out a hot wash (above60 °C) at regular intervals. The indicator will light to remind you tocarry out a hot wash.

Detergent

– Do not exceed the amounts ofdetergent recommended by themanufacturer on the packaging.

– Adjust the dosage to the degree ofsoiling of the laundry.

– Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. ⅓ less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

Choosing the correct extra option(Short, Soak, Pre-wash)

Select:

– A wash programme together with theShort extra option for light to normalsoiling where there are no obviousmarks.

– A wash programme without any extraoptions for normal to heavy soilingwith visible staining.

– A wash programme together with theSoak extra option for heavily soiledlaundry.

– The Pre-wash extra option for laundrywith large amounts of dirt (e.g. dust, sand).

Damage due to foreign objects.Nails, coins, paper clips, and so oncan cause damage to garments andcomponents in the machine.Check the laundry before washingand remove any foreign objects.

Sort the laundry

Sort the laundry by colour and bycare label. Most garments have atextile care label in the collar or sideseam.

Tip: Dark textiles often contain excessdye and should be washed separatelyseveral times before being included in amixed load. Always wash whites andcoloureds separately.

Pre-treating stains

Badly soiled areas and stains shouldbe cleaned as soon as possible, preferably whilst still fresh. Spillagesshould be carefully dabbed off usinga soft, colourfast cloth. Do not rub.

Tip: Stains (e.g. blood, egg, coffee, tea)can be pre-treated using some handytricks which can be found in the Mieleguide to laundry care.

Damage due to solvent-basedcleaning agentsCleaning agents containing benzine, stain remover, etc., can damageplastic parts. When pre-treating textiles, make surethat any plastic parts (e.g. buttons)do not come into contact withcleaning agent.

Risk of explosion due to solvent-based cleaning agents. When using solvent-based cleaningagents, an explosive mixture maydevelop.Never use solvent-based cleaningagents in the washing machine.

23

Detergent dispenser drawerAny detergent suitable for automaticfront loading washing machines can beused. Please observe the instructionsfor use and dosage on the detergentpackaging.

Tips on dosing

Adjust the detergent dosage to the levelof soiling of the laundry and the size ofthe load. Reduce the amount ofdetergent with smaller loads (e.g.reduce the amount of detergent by ⅓when washing a half load).

Too little detergent:

– Results in laundry not being cleanedproperly and may cause it to becomegrey and hard to the touch over time.

– Can lead to a build-up of mould inthe washing machine.

– Results in grease not beingcompletely removed from thelaundry.

– Can lead to limescale deposits on theheater elements.

Too much detergent

– Causes poor wash, rinse, and spinresults.

– Causes higher water consumption asan extra rinse cycle is automaticallyactivated.

– Is a greater burden on theenvironment.

Adding detergent

Pull out the detergent drawer and adddetergent to the compartments.

Detergent

41

The correct detergentAll detergents produced for automaticwashing machines are suitable. Followthe manufacturer's instructions anddosage recommendations on thepackaging.

For users in Asia:please use a low foaming detergentsuitable for use in front-loadingmachines

The right amount to dispensewill depend on the following:– the soiling level of the load

– the quantity of the laundry

– the water hardness level.Check with your local water supplierif you do not know the hardness levelin your area.

Water softenersA water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents in areaswith water hardness levels II and III.Dispense according to the amountspecified on the packaging. First adddetergent and then the water softener.

You can then use the recommendedamount of detergent for water hardnesslevel I.

Water hardness levels

Dispensing aidsUse dispensing aids, (e.g. balls) if theseare supplied with the detergent, particularly when using liquid detergent.

Refill packs of detergentWhen purchasing detergent buy refillpacks wherever possible. This helpsreduce the amount of waste packaging.

Fabric conditioner and liquidstarchFabric conditioner makes garments soft to handle andhelps prevent static cling when tumbledrying.

Starch stiffens and gives body to items oflaundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bedlinen.

General problems with the washing machine

Problem Cause and remedy

The washing machinesmells.

The  indicator light was ignored. A washprogramme using a temperature above 60 °C has notbeen run for a long time. In order to prevent bacteria and unpleasant odours

building up in the washing machine, run theCottons 90 °C programme using Miele machinecleaner or a universal powder detergent.

The door and the detergent dispenser drawer wereleft shut after washing. Leave the door and the detergent dispenser

drawer slightly open to allow them to dry.

The machine shakesduring the spin cycle.

The machine feet are not level. Level the machine and adjust the feet correctly.

The laundry has notbeen spun properly andis still wet.

The machine detected an imbalance during the finalspin cycle and reduced the spin speed automatically. Include both large and small items in the load as

this will give better distribution during spinning.

Strange pump noisescan be heard.

This is not a fault. These slurping noises occur at the end of the pumpsequence as a normal part of operation.

Large amounts ofdetergent residueremain in the detergentdispenser drawer.

The water pressure is too low. Clean the water inlet filter. It may be useful to select the Water plus option.

Powder detergent used in conjunction with watersofteners tends to become sticky. In future, add washing powder into the dispenser

drawer first, and then add the water softener.

An unsatisfactory wash result

Problem Cause and remedy

Liquid detergent doesnot give the requiredresult.

Liquid detergents usually contain no bleachingagents. They do not remove fruit, coffee and teastains. Use a general purpose powder detergent

containing a bleaching agent. Use the appropriate capsule or add stain removers

to the compartment. Never put stain removers and liquid detergent

together in the dispenser drawer.

Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent. Before washing the next load run a Cottons 60°C

programme with powder detergent but without aload.

White residues whichlook like powderdetergent are seen ondark textiles afterwashing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which

contains no zeolites. Liquid detergents usuallycontain no zeolites.

Use the Dark garments / Denim programme fordark coloured laundry.

The water protection systemThe Miele water protection systemprotects all parts of the washingmachine from water damage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

– the inlet hose

– the electronic unit and drainage andoverflow protection

– the drain hose

Inlet hose

– Protection against bursting

The inlet hose is tested to withstandpressure of at least 7,000 kPa.

Electronic unit and washing machinehousing

– SumpAny leaking water is collected in asump in the base of the machine. Afloat switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.

– Overflow protectionThis prevents the washing machinetaking in too much water. If the waterlevel exceeds a certain level, thedrain pump switches in and pumpsthe excess water away.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from being emptiedcompletely.

Connection to the water supply

Health risk and risk of damagedue to contaminated incoming water. The quality of the incoming watermust correspond to the drinkingwater specification of the country inwhich the washing machine is beingoperated.Always connect the washingmachine to the mains water supply.

The washing machine should beconnected to the mains water supply inaccordance with current local andnational safety regulations. The Germanauthorities do not require it to have anon-return valve as the washingmachine has been designed to complywith DIN regulations.

The water connection pressure needsto be between 100 kPa and 1000 kPa. Ifthe water connection pressure exceeds1000 kPa, a pressure reducing valvemust be installed.

A stopcock with a ¾ inch threadedunion is required for the connection. Ifthis is not available, only a qualifiedinstaller may connect the washingmachine to the mains water supply.

The connection point is subject tomains water pressure.Turn on the stopcock slowly andcheck for leaks. Correct the positionof the washer and the threadedunion if necessary.

The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply. The washing machine must not beconnected to a hot water supply.

Maintenance

Only use a genuine Miele hose that hasbeen pressure tested to withstand atleast 7,000 kPa should you ever need areplacement.

Damage caused by dirty water.A filter is located in the open end ofthe inlet hose and another in theintake point to protect the inlet valvein the washing machine. These filters must not be removed.
