damage. Do not install and use adamaged machine.

Before connecting the machine, ensure that the connection data on

the data plate (fusing, voltage andfrequency) match the mains electricitysupply. If in any doubt, consult aqualified electrician.

Caution:if the appliance is supplied from a

cord extension set or electrical portableoutlet device the cord extension set orelectrical portable outlet device shouldbe positioned so it is not subject tosplashing or ingress of moisture.

The electrical safety of this appli-ance can only be guaranteed when

continuity is complete between the ma-chine and an effective earthing systemwhich complies with local and nationalregulations. It is most important that thisbasic safety requirement is regularlytested by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be heldresponsible for the consequences of aninadequate earthing system.

For safety reasons do not operatethis appliance on an extension

cable. Extension leads do notguarantee the required safety of theappliance. Danger of overheating.

The machine is built in accordancewith current safety requirements.

Unauthorised repairs could result inunforeseen dangers for the user, forwhich the manufacturer cannot acceptresponsibility. Repairs should only beundertaken by a Miele approvedengineer.

This machine must only beconnected to the on-site water

supply using a new hose kit. Old hosesmust not be re-used.

Faulty components must only bereplaced by genuine Miele original

spare parts. Only when these parts arefitted can the safety standards of themachine be guaranteed.

If the connection cable is faulty itmust only be replaced by a Miele

approved service technician to protectthe user from danger.

A washer and dryer should neverbe stacked without using the

proper stacking kit. Doing so isextremely dangerous, as the dryer mayvibrate off of the washing machineduring use.

In countries where there are areaswhich may be subject to infestation

by cockroaches or other vermin, payparticular attention to keeping theappliance and its surroundings in aclean condition at all times. Anydamage which may be caused bycockroaches or other vermin will not becovered by the appliance guarantee.

UseThis equipment is not designed formaritime use or for use in mobile

installations such as caravans, aircraftetc. However it may be suitable forsuch usage subject to a risk assess-ment of the installation being carriedout by a suitably qualified engineer.

Do not install your washingmachine in rooms where

temperatures below freezing mayoccur. Frozen hoses may burst underpressure. The reliability of the electroniccontrol unit may be impaired attemperatures below freezing point.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit

fitting at the rear of the machine hasbeen removed (see section on"Installation"). During spinning, a transitfitting which is still in place may result indamage to both the machine andadjacent furniture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if themachine is to be left for any length

of time (e.g. holiday), especially if thereis no floor drain (gully) in the immediatevicinity.

Flooding dangerIf hooking the drain hose into a

wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent thesink from overflowing.Make sure the drain hose is secure, sothat the force of the water flowing out ofthe hose does not dislodge it.Otherwise this will result in flooding.

Take care to ensure that foreign ob-jects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper

clips) do not find their way into the ma-chine with the washing. These maydamage components of the machine(e.g. suds container, drum), which inturn can result in damage to the wash-ing.

Before using the machine for the firsttime ensure that it is correctlyinstalled and connected. See therelevant section under "Installation".Also check that the fluff filter issecurely tightened. Otherwise thereis a risk of water leakage during use.

For safety reasons spinning is notpossible until the machine has beenprepared for using for the first time. Toactivate the spinning function you mustrun a wash programme without laundryand without detergent.

Using detergent could result in anexcessive build-up of foam.

This also activates the ball valve. Theball valve prevents detergent escapingfrom the suds container into the sumpduring a wash programme, thus makingmaximum use of the detergent.

Energy and water consumption

– Water consumption and energyusage are determined by the size ofthe load.

– Use the Automatic or the Quick washprogramme for smaller amounts oflaundry.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed in the Cottons programmes, the automatic load recognitionsystem will reduce the amount ofwater, time and energy used. Thismay mean that the programmeduration alters during the course ofthe wash programme.

– Instead of the Cottons 95°Cprogramme, use the Cottons 60°Cprogramme together with theIntensive additional option. This willgive an energy saving of between35% and 45%. The programmeduration will be longer. Thiscombination is sufficient for mostlevels of soiling. For stubborn or oldstains, use the Soak option.

Detergent

– Do not exceed the amount ofdetergent recommended by themanufacturer on the packaging.

– Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. 1/3 less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

Additional options(Soak, Pre-wash, Intensive)

Select:

A wash programme without anyadditional options for light to normalsoiling where there are no obviousmarks.

A wash programme together with theIntensive option for normal to heavilysoiled laundry with visible staining.

– Use the additional option Soakinstead of Pre-wash. If Soak isfollowed immediately by a main washthe same suds are used.

When drying with a tumble dryer

– Selecting the highest possible spinspeed for the wash programme willsave energy when drying in a tumbledryer afterwards.

All modern detergents produced forfront loading automatic washingmachines are suitable, including liquid, compact (concentrated), tablets andspecial application detergents. Usedispensing aids, e.g. balls, if these aresupplied. Tablets are suitable for fullloads but note that it may beimpractical to reduce tablets for smallerloads. Some tablets do not dissolve asrapidly as others and may not besuitable for Quick wash programmes.

Woollens and knitwear containing woolmixtures and hand-washable garmentsshould be washed using a detergentspecifically designed for washingwoollens.

Silk should be washed using a liquiddetergent specifically designed forwashing woollens. Do not usebiological detergents on silk as theenzymes may damage the silk!

Instructions for use and recommendedamounts for a full load are given on thedetergent packaging.

Liquid detergent

Liquid detergent should be dispensedusing a ball provided by the manufac-turer for programmes without apre-wash.

For programmes with a pre-wash youwill need to purchase a special con-tainer from the Miele Spare Parts de-partment which sits in the main washcompartment j of the detergent dis-penser drawer. Add liquid detergent tothis container for the main wash and tocompartment i for the pre-wash.

The right amount to dispense willdepend on the following:

– The quantity of laundry.– The soiling level of the laundry.

Lightly soiledNo visible dirt or stains. Possiblyslight body odour.Normally soiledVisibly dirty and/or just a few slightstains.Heavily soiledStains and soiling clearly visible.

– The water hardness level.Check with your local water supplierif you do not know the waterhardness level in your area.

Water softenersA water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents inextremely hard water areas. Dispenseaccording to the amount specified onthe packaging. First add detergent andthen the water softener.Use a quantity of detergent as for softwater.Miele do not recommend connectingthe machine to a household watersoftener.

Washing with severalcomponentsIf you wash using several components(e.g. special application detergents),dispense them into compartment j inthe following order:1. Detergent2. Water softener3. Stain removerThis way the agents are distributedmore efficiently.y.

Fabric conditioners and liquidstarchFabric conditioners make garments softand fluffy to handle and help preventstatic cling when tumble drying.

Starch stiffens and gives body to itemsof laundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths andbed linen.

^ Dispense according to the amountspecified on the packaging.

Automatic dispensing of fabricconditioners or liquid starch tolaundry at the end of a program

^ Add the fabric conditioner or liquidstarch to compartment §. Do notexceed the maximum level mark.

The conditioner or liquid starch isautomatically dispensed in the lastrinse. At the end of the program a smallamount of water remains in the fabricconditioner compartment §.

If starching frequently, clean thedispenser compartment andespecially the siphon tube andconditioner channel. See "Cleaningthe detergent dispenser drawer".

Adding fabric conditioner or liquidstarch separately

^ Add fabric conditioner or starch tocompartment i.

^ Turn the program selector to Starch.

^ Select a spin speed.

^ Press the Start button.

E-Cloth

A microfibre "E-Cloth" is available fromthe Miele Spare Parts department, Partnumber 98013530, which is suitable forcleaning surfaces such as stainlesssteel, glass, plastic and chrome withoutthe use of chemicals. It can be washed300 times.

Extra cleaning

Carry out a hot wash (70°C or above)with powder detergent approx. every 6weeks to help prevent deposits buildingup in the machine. These can occurwhen washing is mainly done at lowtemperatures, and also lead tounpleasant smells. If you have noreason to wash occasionally at this hightemperature, then run a Cottons 95°Cprogram with detergent but no laundryat regular intervals.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.

Please note the following points:

^ The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.

^ To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

^ we recommend a plywood base(at least 59x52x3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joists and not only to thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables.

If possible, install the machine in acorner, as this is usually the most stablepart of the floor.

,If the machine is installed on araised plinth, it has to be securedagainst slippage during spin usingretaining clips (available from theMiele Spare Parts Dept).

Installing the washing machineTo manoeuvre the machine out of itspacking case to its installlation site holdit by the edge of the lid where itprotrudes to the rear of the washingmachine as well as by the handlerecesses at the front.

Please note:

^ Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

,Ensure that the machine feet andthe floor are dry to prevent themachine from slipping during thespin cycle.

Building under a continuousworktop / in a kitchen run

– A special building under conversionkit* is required. The machine lid must be replaced bya cover plate. To ensure electricalsafety the cover plate must befitted. **

N.B.**

If you wish to push your machine undera worktop and there is space to do thiswithout removing the lid, theconversion kit is not necessary.Otherwise the conversion kit isessential.

– For installation under a work surface900/910 mm from the floor, a raisingkit* is required.

– Connections for electricity, water anddrainage should be installed in sucha way that they remain accessiblewhen the machine is in place.

Fitting instructions are supplied with theconversion kit.

All parts marked* are available from theMiele Spare Parts or Sales Department.

The fitting of cover plates andstacking kits must only beundertaken by qualified andcompetent persons, in accordancewith the instructions supplied withthe kit.

Washer and Dryer stack

A Miele tumble dryer can be stackedwith the washing machine. A stackingkit* is necessary and can be purchasedfrom the Miele Spare Parts Department.

Please note

a Safety distance to wall:at least 2 cm

b Height:Stacking kit with pull-out shelf:approx. 169 cmStacking kit without pull-out shelf:approx. 170 cm

The Miele water protectionsystemThe Miele Waterproof system protectsall parts of the washing machine fromwater damage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

1) the inlet hoses

2) the electronic unit and the washingmachine housing

3) the drain hose

1) Inlet hoses

– The inlet hoses can withstandpressure of more than 7000 kPa.

2) Electronic unit and washingmachine housing

– Sump

Any leaking water is collected in asump in the base of the machine. Afloat switches off the safety valves, preventing any more water flowinginto the machine and water in thesuds container is pumped away.

– Overflow protection

This prevents the washing machinetaking in too much water. If the waterlevel exceeds a certain level, thedrain pump switches in and pumpsthe excess water away.

3) Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from beingemptied completely.

Installation and connection

49

Page 50: Operating instructions for Washing machine W 2104

Connection to the water supplyThe machine should be connected to amains water supply in accordance withlocal and national safety regulations.Connection to a household watersoftener is not recommended. TheGerman authorities do not require it tohave a non-return valve as the washingmachine has been designed to complywith DIN regulations.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1000 kPa. If it is higher than1000 kPa it is essential to fit a reducervalve.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith 3/4" thread. The stopcock shouldbe fitted by a qualified plumber.

,The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thestopcock slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.

The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply.

Maintenance and care

Only use a genuine Miele hose shouldyou ever need a replacement orextension. These are tested towithstand pressure of at least 7000 kPa.

In order to protect the water inletvalve, the two dirt filters - one in theopen end of the inlet hose, one atthe inlet point in the machine, mustnot be removed.

Extension hose

– Longer hoses 2.5 or 4.0 m in lengthare available from your Miele dealeror the Miele Spare Parts Departmentas optional extras.

Installation and connection

50

Page 51: Operating instructions for Washing machine W 2104

Connection to the drainagesystemThe machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of 1 metre*.

The drain hose must not be kinked asthis restricts drainage. The swivel elbowat the end of the hose can be turned ineither direction, or can be detached ifrequired, with a sharp twist and pull.

* For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a maximum of 1.8 m) a secondduo-drain pump is available with thecorresponding kit from the Miele SpareParts Department or your Miele Dealer.

Drain hose connection:

1. Direct into a sink or basin:

Please note the following

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure.

– Make sure that the water can drainaway freely without hindrance.Otherwise there is a risk of wateroverflowing or of some of the drainedwater being sucked back into themachine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple. There is noneed to use a non-return valve.

3. Connected securely to a standpipe.

4. Connected securely to a floor gully.

If required, the drain hose can beextended to a length of 5 m. Thenecessary parts can be purchasedfrom the Miele Spare Parts Departmentor your Miele dealer.
