The METTLER TOLEDO LabPac-M

The METTLER TOLEDO LabPac-M has been developed especially for use in the chemistry lab.It comprises a terminal (input keypad) and a plug-in program cassette. Connected to METTLERTOLEDO balances employing M technology, the LabPac-M provides an extremely easy way ofperforming the three most commonly required tasks in the lab.

- Net total weighing: Weighing in of any number of components from zero with the possibilityof calling up the net total at any time. With target weight setting,weighing-in aid (DeltaTrac) is activated.

- % Formulation: With or without preset component weights as a percentage of theformula weight. With target weight setting, weighing-in aid (DeltaTrac)is activated.

- Differential weighing: Determination of weight change - due to a physical or chemical process- in weight units or percent.

When METTLER TOLEDO balances of the SM series are used, there is a possibility to workwith the SM terminal instead of the LabPac-M terminal. Further details are given in the Section “SMkeypad” on pages 18 and 19.

To connect the terminal and other units

Two connection sockets at the rear of the balance are provided for the following units:Socket “DATA I/ O”: Units with RS232C or CL interface, e.g. GA44 Printer (for GA44 in the

configuration register, section I-Face; select standard setting: S.Stb,b 2400 and interval 1 s)

Socket “GM”: LabPac-M terminal and GM units with adapter plug

The coding pins in the sockets prevent improper connection.

To insert the program cassette

Insertion of the program cassette is described in the Operating Instructions of the balance used.Notes: - Before changing the program cassette, disconnect power cord of the balance (with SM

balances, press key [OFF]).- Replace standard program cassette by LabPac-M cassette.- Please keep the standard cassette; it may be useful in subsequent use without the

LabPac-M.

Configuration register with LabPac-M

The LabPac-M can be adapted to units specific to the application. In the section -Unit- of theconfiguration register (see Operating Instructions of the balance, “Configuration”), the followingcan be selected whatever the standard software of the balance:

Language: -E -Yes- = English (standard setting)-F -Oui- = French-d -Ja- = German-E -Si- = Spanish-I -Si- = Italian

Date: EU date = day, month, year (standard setting)US date = month, day, year

Printout: Au-Prot = printout automatic, depending on application (standard setting)SEL.Prot = printout only with [PRINT] key

Notes: - If the configuration register cannot be selected, check whether the jumper of theprogram cassette is in position “unsecured” (cf. Operating Instructions of thebalance, “Configuration”).

- Reset does not reset language and date.

The METTLER DeltaTrac

With METTLER balances employing M technology, the DeltaTrac can be used as a weighing-in aid or as a dynamic graphic display. Depending onthe application, the DeltaTrac displays "target weight” when the weight on the balance corresponds to the preset (keyed in) weight value or the piecenumber. The display has two accuracy ranges for coarse and fine weighing.

Operation of the DeltaTrac is illustrated here with a weighing to target weight in the application net total.

Dynamic graphic display

A container is placed on the balance and tared with the control bar.

The display continues to function as though the LabPac-M were not connected. It does not switchon until entries are made via the keypad during an application.

The segments of the dynamic graphic display show the container weight; the digital readoutremains at zero (container tared).

Weighing-in aid

The keys [NET TOTAL] and [COMP ] are now pressed, the component weight inputted and theentry closed with [ENTER]. This alters the way in which the dynamic graphic display functions:

The radial bars indicating the container weight are blanked out. A horizontal bar appears at the“9 o’clock” position. This is the coarse display and the 9 o’clock position is the zero position (nomaterial has been weighed yet).

Think of the graphic display, which is like a clock face, as being divided into a lower and upper half. The lower half shows the coarse reading, the upper half is the fine readout.

If the bars are in the left-hand half, the weight is below the target value. However, if the bars arein the right-hand half, the weight is greater than the target value.

5

Weighing-in, coarse (material to be weighed added at a brisk rate)

The bar previously pointing in a horizontal direction now rotates downwards. With 1/3 of the weight,it shows “8 o’clock”, with 2/3 “7 o’clock”. The target weight is reached when the bar points verticallydownwards (“6 o’clock”).

If more material is added (i.e. overfilling) the bar moves from the 6 o’clock position towards3 o’clock (shown dashed in the illustration). The 3 o’clock position denotes 100% overfill. The barremains in this position even if more material is added.

Weighing-in, fine

When the coarse pointer is just before the 6 o’clock position, the fine pointer appears. It also beginsat the 9 o’clock position and moves towards the 12 o’clock position. Each step in the pointer’sprogress corresponds to 0.5% of the target weight. The target weight is reached at the 12 o’clockposition (accuracy ±0.25% of target weight). If still more material is added, i.e. overfilling, the finepointer moves on towards the 3 o’clock position: shown dashed in the illustration. The 3 o’clockposition signifies 7.5% overfilling. The fine pointer remains in this position even if filling continues. At the same time, the coarse pointer moves from 6 o’clock in the direction 3 o’clock.

Weight OK

When the exact target weight (±0.25%) is reached, the fine and coarse pointers form a vertical linebetween 12 and 6 o’clock. Tolerance markers are provided to the left and right of the 12 o’clockposition. They indicate a tolerance range of ±2.5% of the target weight. If an accuracy of ±0.25%is not sufficient, material can be introduced at a brisk rate with the weighing-in aid until the finepointer is positioned just before 12 o’clock; the digital readout then provides further guidance. The pointers jump back to 9 o’clock when the component weight is stored by pressing the [RE-ZERO] key or [ENTER] after a new entry with [COMP ].

% Formula (information)

Typical tasks and possibilities

- Setting target weight (= 100%) of formula in grams and of components in percent of target weight.- Mixing solutions, starting with the weight of the 1st component on the weighing pan (input of 1st component in %). The target weight (100%) is

calculated by the balance.- Weighing in each component from zero with weighing-in aid.- Net total (sum of components) can be called up any time in % and weight.

Specific key functions

Activates the % FORMULA application and the 3 related keys. Cleared by [RESET] or selection of another application.

Begin entering the formula target weight in weight units (e.g. gram). This target weight represents 100% in relation to the components.Without entry of the target weight, the weight on the balance pan can be entered with [COMP IN %]. The target weight is then calculated.

Begin entering the components in % of target weight. Weighing-in aid with coarse and fine pointers indicates “target weight” whenspecified percentage reached. After weighing in, [COMP IN %] must be pressed to add effective percentage to net total. The displayis then set to zero automatically.

To call up the net total reached so far: Press key once to give net total in % of target weight, press twice for net total in weight units(e.g. gram). Clears previously shown, current component percentage. Thus press this key only when weighing of a component iscomplete. Return to % display by inputting the next component percentage.

Differential weighing (information)

Typical tasks and possibilities

- Weighed in samples are reweighed after treatment. Weights can be read in % or g.- Balance can be used for other weighings while samples undergo treatment, e.g. net total or % formula.- Storage of up to 20 tare weights and initial weighings possible. The results can be displayed in 4 different ways.

Specific key functions

Activates the differential weighing application and the 3 related keys. Cleared by [RESET] or selection of another application. Key mustalso be pressed again before the actual differential weighing.

Stores the container weight. Sets digital readout to zero, but not the weighing-in aid. Occupied tare memory shown by LED.

Stores the sample weight weighed. Occupied weight memory is shown by LED. The container weight is subtracted automatically.

Ends the weighing process (single weighing or a series of weighings). Only the LED [END RESULTS] remains on. The key mustbe pressed to store the weighing and to start the differential weighing. After pressing the key [END RESULTS], work can also becarried out in another application.

Notes

- Calculation method for weight difference or differential weighing

After loading the sample for differential weighing and pressing the key [END RESULTS], the result is displayed in the calculation mode lastused (CLEAR 1, 2 or 3) and recorded. As long as the sample remains on the balance, it is possible to switch to a different calculation method andprint out the corresponding value with [PRINT].

The following calculation methods are possible:

[CLEAR] weight difference in % of initial weighing (default, if nothing else has been selected)[1] weight difference in weight units[2] differential weighing in weight units[3] differential weighing in % of initial weighing

- The following two types of weighings are possible:

a) Store all tare weights (1...20) in succession, then the weights (1...20) in the same order example 1b) First the tare and then the initial weight are stored, sample by sample (1...20) example 2

Between the individual weighings (container or sample) of a series, the balance can be tared with the control bar if necessary.Stored values are indicated with LEDs.

- Repetition of the differential weighing:

As long as [END RESULTS] [RESET] is not pressed during the differential weighing, the values remain stored. The differential weighing canthus be performed again.

- Clearing of an unusable weighing series:

Stored weight values of an unusable sample series which has been closed with [END RESULTS] can be cleared with [DIFF. WEIGHING][END RESULTS ] [RESET].

Application examples for differential weighing, see following two pages.

Operation of METTLER TOLEDO SM balances with the SM terminal

METTLER TOLEDO balances of the SM type can be operated with the SM terminal in the net totalapplication. Inputs can be made only via the LabPac-M terminal, however. After entry of thecomponent weight, the LabPac-M terminal can thus be removed until a change in the setting isdesired.

Notes

- Values which are not saved with [SAVE] are lost when the balance is switched off or on powerfailure.

- Saved values are cleared with the keys [RESET] [SAVE] of the LabPac-M terminal.

- In the % formula and differential weighing applications, the keys on the SM terminal have nofunction.
