Your appliance is equipped with a warn-ing system to ensure that temperatureincreases in the freezer section do notgo unnoticed and also prevents energyfrom being wasted when a door is leftopen.

Temperature alarmIf the temperature in the freezer sectionbecomes too warm, the bottom temper-ature display and the alarm symbol will flash. An alarm will also sound.

The temperature the appliance is set atdetermines the temperature the appli-ance recognizes as being too warm.

The audio and visual signals are trig-gered, for example:

– when the appliance is switched on ifthe temperature in the appliance dif-fers greatly from the set temperature,

– if a lot of room air enters the freezerwhen food is being loaded, rear-ranged or taken out,

– when freezing large amounts of foodat once,

– when freezing fresh food which is stillwarm,

– when there is a loss of power,

– if the appliance has a fault.

The alarm will stop, the temperaturedisplay will light up constantly againand the alarm symbol  will go out assoon as the temperature has droppedto the correct level again.

if the temperature in the freezerremains above 0 °F (-18 °C) for along time, check that the frozen foodhas not started to defrost. If it has, check that the food is safeto use and if it is, then use it as soonas possible or cook it before freezingit again.

38

WARNING! Fire hazard!Do not operate any electrical equip-ment inside the appliance. This cancause sparking.

Danger of explosion.Do not store explosive materials inthe appliance or any products con-taining propellants (e.g. spray cans).

If storing food which contains alot of fat or oil in the appliance or theappliance door, make sure that itdoes not come into contact withplastic components as this couldcause stress cracks or break theplastic.Make sure that no oil or grease leaksonto the plastic parts of the appli-ance. This can cause the plastic tocrack and break.

Various cooling zonesDue to natural air circulation there aredifferent temperature zones in the re-frigerator section.

Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowest sec-tion of the appliance. Make use of thedifferent temperature zones when plac-ing food in the appliance.

To allow air to circulate efficiently, donot pack food too closely together inthe refrigerator.

If there is insufficient air circulationthe cooling performance will de-crease and energy consumption willincrease.Do not cover the fan in the rear wallof the refrigerator.

Food must not touch the back of therefrigerator section as it may freeze tothe back wall.

This appliance has DynamicCooling, which helps to keep an even tempera-ture when the fan is running. WhenDynamicCooling is turned on, the dif-ference between the various zones isless pronounced.

Warmest area

The warmest area in the refrigeratorsection is in the top section of the door.Use this for storing butter so that it re-mains spreadable and cheese so that itretains its flavor.

Coldest area

The coldest area in the refrigerator sec-tion is directly above the dividing plateof the PerfectFresh zone and againstthe rear wall. However, inside the Per-fectFresh zone is even colder.

Use these areas in the refrigerator sec-tion and in the PerfectFresh zone for alldelicate and highly perishable food,e.g.:

– fish, meat, poultry,

– cold cuts

– dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream,

– fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orpie dough,

Food which is not suitable forstorage in the refrigerator sec-tionNot all food is suitable for refrigerationat temperatures below 41°F (5°C) be-cause it is sensitive to cold. Dependingon the type of food, the appearance, consistency, flavor and/or vitamin con-tent may be altered if stored at too colda temperature.

Food that is sensitive to cold includes:

– pineapple, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, mangos, melons, pa-paya, passion fruit, citrus fruit (suchas lemons, oranges, mandarins, grapefruit),

– fruit that is not yet ripe,

– eggplant, cucumbers, potatoes, pep-pers, tomatoes, zucchini,

– hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan.

What to be aware of whenshopping for foodThe freshness of food when first placedin the appliance is the most importantfactor in determining how long it staysfresh, and how long it can be kept in theappliance.Always observe the use-by date andthe recommended storage temperature.Time out of the refrigerator should bekept to a minimum, for example, whentransporting food in a hot car.

Tip: Take a cool bag with you whenshopping and on return place food intothe appliance immediately.

Storing food correctlyFood should generally be stored cov-ered or packaged in the refrigeratorsection (there are some exceptions tothis rule in the PerfectFresh zone - seebelow). This will prevent food smellsfrom affecting other foods, food fromdrying out, and also any cross-contami-nation of bacteria. This is especially im-portant for storing animal products. The shelf life of food can be significantlyincreased by setting the correct tem-perature and maintaining good stan-dards of hygiene.

Page 41: Operating and Installation Instructions Fridge … and Installation Instructions Fridge-freezer Combination To prevent accidents and machine damage, read these instructions be- fore

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

41

Due to the optimum storage conditionsin the PerfectFresh zone for fruit, veg-etables, fish, meat and dairy products, food remains fresh for longer, and flavorand vitamins are retained.

The optimum storage temperature forfresh food which is not sensitive to thecold is 32 °F - 37 °F (0 °C - 3 °C). Thisis the temperature range which is auto-matically maintained in the PerfectFreshzone. Food which is not sensitive tocold can be stored in the PerfectFreshzone at this temperature without loss offreshness for considerably longer thanin a standard refrigerator, as the deteri-oration process is decelerated at thistemperature.

The humidity level in the PerfectFreshzone can also be regulated to providethe correct conditions for food storedinside it. An increase in the humiditylevel ensures that food retains its ownmoisture and does not dry out soquickly. Therefore, such food will remainfirm and fresh for longer.

Food should be in good conditionfrom the start to get good storage re-sults.

Take food out of the PerfectFresh zoneapprox. 30-60 minutes before using it.The aroma and flavor do not fully de-velop until the food has reached roomtemperature.

Regulating the humidity level inthe compartments

Move the slide control to the desiredsetting, depending on whether youwish to use the compartment as adry  or a humid  compartment

The Info system in the glass plateabove the PerfectFresh Pro zone helpsyou choose the correct compartmentand/or select the appropriate setting inthe humidity controlled compartment.

Each type of food has its own charac-teristics and requires certain storageconditions.

High humidity  in the humidity con-trolled compartment can cause con-densate to build up on the floor ofthe compartment. This should be removed with a cloth.

Page 42: Operating and Installation Instructions Fridge … and Installation Instructions Fridge-freezer Combination To prevent accidents and machine damage, read these instructions be- fore

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

42

Using a compartment as a drycompartmentIf the slide control is set to dry , air hu-midity is not increased.

The dry compartment is suitable forstoring perishable foods such as:

– fresh fish, shellfish,

– meat, poultry,

– salads,

– dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, cream, etc.

– any type of food can in fact be storedin this compartment, as long as it ispackaged.

The low temperature in the dry com-partment is its most distinctive feature. The humidity level is similar to that in aconventional refrigerator.

Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others.Shellfish, for example, deterioratesfaster than fish, and fish deterioratesfaster than meat.

Always keep these foods covered orwrapped.

Using a compartment as a hu-mid compartmentIf the slide control is set to humid , airhumidity is increased.

The humid compartment is particularlysuitable for storing fruit and vegetables.

The humidity greatly depends on thetype and quantity of food being stored,if stored unwrapped. The humidity can be too low if there isonly a small amount stored in the com-partment.

Tip: If you are only storing a smallamount of food, wrap it in airtight pack-aging.

Page 43: Operating and Installation Instructions Fridge … and Installation Instructions Fridge-freezer Combination To prevent accidents and machine damage, read these instructions be- fore

Storing food in the PerfectFresh zone

43

If you are not satisfied with your stored food (for example the food wilts orbecomes withered after only a short storage time), check the following:

Only place fresh food in the appliance.

Clean the PerfectFresh compartments before storing food in them.

Very wet food should be dried off before storing it.

Do not store any food in the PerfectFresh zone which is sensitive to cold (see"Food which is not suitable in the refrigerator section").

Set the slide control to the correct position for the food being stored (humiditynot increased or humidity increased).

Increased humidity in the humidity controlled compartment is achieved viathe moisture present in the food being stored, i.e. the more food stored in thecompartment, the higher the humidity. If too much moisture has gathered on the floor of the compartment and the foodhas been affected, select the setting. Otherwise dry the floor and underneath the lid with a cloth and place a rack orsimilar item in the compartment so that moisture can then drip down.If the humidity level becomes too low, wrap the food in airtight packaging.

If you think that the temperature in the PerfectFresh zone is not correct, try ad-justing it slightly by 34-35 °F (1-2 °C) via the refrigerator section temperaturecontrol. To avoid frost damage to food, a higher temperature must be set if icecrystals begin to form on the bottom of the PerfectFresh zone.

48

Always observe USDA food safetyguidelines.

WARNING! Fire hazard!Do not operate any electrical equip-ment inside the appliance. This cancause sparking.

Maximum freezing capacityTo ensure that fresh food placed in thefreezer freezes through to the core asquickly as possible, the maximumfreezing capacity must not be ex-ceeded. The maximum freezing capac-ity for freezing within a 24-hour periodis given on the data plate: "Freezing ca-pacity ....lbs/24 hrs."

What happens when you freezefresh food?Fresh food should be frozen as quicklyas possible so that the nutritional valueof the food, its vitamin content, appear-ance and flavor are maintained.

The longer food is frozen, the more wa-ter it loses from each individual cell in tothe intermediate spaces. The cells thenshrink. During the defrosting process, only some of this water is reabsorbedby the cells. In practical terms, thismeans that the food loses a substantialamount of liquid, which can be seen bythe fact that a large pool of water col-lects around it.

If food is frozen quickly, the cells haveless time to lose moisture, so theyshrink less. As there is not so muchmoisture loss, it is easier for the food toreabsorb it during the defrostingprocess, and very little water collectsaround the defrosted food.

Storing frozen foodWhen buying frozen food to store inyour freezer, make sure to check:

– that the packaging is not damaged,

– the expiration date and

– the temperature at which the frozenfood is being stored in the shop. Thelength of time it can be kept is re-duced if it has been stored at a tem-perature warmer than 0°F (-18°C).

Buy frozen food at the very end ofyour shopping trip.

Store it in the freezer compartment assoon as possible.

Never re-freeze partially or fullydefrosted food. Defrosted food mayonly be re-frozen after it has beencooked.

Home freezing

Only freeze food that is fresh and ingood condition.

Tips for home freezing

– The following types of food are suit-able for home freezing: fresh meat, poultry, game, fish, veg-etables, herbs, fresh fruit, dairy prod-ucts, baked goods, leftovers, andmost pre-cooked meals.

– The following types of food are notsuitable for freezing:Grapes, lettuce, radishes, sourcream, mayonnaise, eggs in theirshells, onions, whole raw apples andpears.

– To retain color, taste, aroma and vita-min C, vegetables should beblanched after they have beentrimmed and washed. To blanch:bring a large saucepan of water tothe boil, immerse the vegetables inthe fast boiling water for 2-3 minutes, depending on variety. Remove, andplunge into ice-cold water to coolquickly. Drain and pack ready forfreezing.

– Lean meat freezes better than fattymeat and can be stored for consider-ably longer.

– To prevent chops, steaks, cutlets, etc. from freezing together in solidblocks when packed, separate with asheet of plastic freezer film.

– Do not season fresh foods orblanched vegetables before freezing.Only season cooked food lightly be-fore freezing, but care should betaken as the taste of some spices al-ters when frozen.

– Placing hot foods or drinks in thefreezer causes food that is alreadyfrozen to partially thaw and increasesenergy consumption. Allow hot foodsand drinks to cool down before plac-ing them in the freezer.

Packaging

Freeze food in portions.

Suitable packing material

– Plastic films

– Freezer bags

– Aluminum foil

– Freezer containers

Unsuitable packing material

– Packing paper

– Parchment paper

Tip: Freezer bags may also be sealedusing home heat sealing kits.

Label the package with the contentsand the date of freezing.

Before placing food in thefreezer When freezing more than 4 lbs (2 kg)

of fresh food, switch on the Super-Freeze function 24 hours before plac-ing the food in the freezer (see "UsingSuperCool and SuperFreeze - Super-Freeze function").

This helps food which is already storedin the freezer to stay frozen.

Placing food in the freezer When placing items in the freezer, en-

sure that the packaging and contain-ers are dry to prevent them fromsticking together when frozen.

Unfrozen food should not touchfrozen food as this will cause frozenfood to begin to thaw.

Food to be frozen can be placed any-where in the freezer.

DefrostingFrozen food can be thawed in variousways:

– in the microwave,
