Dear Friends

A very warm welcome to Opera Gems, greatest hits from some of opera’s finestmoments. Love and loss, passion, rivalry, redemption – enjoy the drama ofopera without the plots in a nostalgic mix of hauntingly beautiful and familiarovertures and choruses. We are delighted to be joined by Glasgow Symphony Orchestra for thisevening’s performance, which is part of the West End Festival, under the batonof their conductor Dr. Tommy Fowler. The concert recognises the bicentenariesof Wagner's and Verdi's births, and accordingly will open with Wagner’sOverture to Die Meistersinger. Verdi is represented by several of his best-knownchoruses. After the interval the orchestra opens with the final movement of theSymphony in D Minor by César Franck, his only symphony and the only worktonight which is not from an opera.

Once again we are most grateful for the dedication of our musical directorChristopher Barr and accompanist Razvan Luculescu who have prepared us fortonight’s concert with their usual patience and good humour. Both are singingwith us tonight and Razvan will accompany the choir on piano for Cachuchafrom The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan.

Do have a look at our website www.strathavenchoral.com for informationabout forthcoming concerts and events.

We thank the businesses who have sponsored tonight’s concert programme. Please give them your support.

Enjoy your evening – I hope we have included your favourite.

Compared to some Wagner opera preludes which set the scene forthe action and move right into it, the music which begins this opera isan overture of the old-fashioned style. A number of different tunesfrom the opera are organised into a formal scheme with an assertiveconclusion. The opening is taken from the processional music of themastersingers’ guild. The opera tells the story of how Walther gets thegirl after winning the song competition; especially after his rival,Beckmesser, is exposed as a cheat. When the first tune is over the musicmoves to more fleeting themes amongthem a motive derived from thecrowd’s mockery of Beckmesser whichis recognisable if you fit the words ofthe English translation to it - “Surelyshe’ll refuse him”. A return to C majorand a single triangle stroke heralds animposing contrapuntal web whenseveral of the themes are woundtogether.

It is probably the best known part of the opera. The setting is a gypsy camp in themountains of Biscay, where the men beat out the rhythm of the chorus on their anvils.

Vedi! le fosche notturne spogliede' cieli sveste l'immensa vôlta:sembra una vedova che alfin si togliei bruni panni ond'era involta.

All'opra, all'opra! Dagli. Martella.

All'opra, all'opra..Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?Chi del gitano i giorni abbella,chi? chi i giorni abbella?

La zingarella, la zingarella, la zingarella!

See how the clouds melt away from theface of the sky when the sun shines, itsbrightness beaming; just as a widow, discarding her black robes, shows all herbeauty in brilliance gleaming.

To work! Lift up your hammers!Who turns the Gypsy's day from gloom tobrightest sunshine?Who turns ...Who? Who from gloom to brightestsunshine? His lovely Gypsy maid!

Fill up the goblets! New strength andcourage flow from lusty wine to soul andbody.See how the rays of the sun play andsparkle and give to our wine gay newsplendour. So, to work now!Who turns the Gypsy's day from gloom tobrightest sunshine?Who? Who from gloom to brightestsunshine? His lovely Gypsy maid!

The “Humming Chorus” ends the second act ofPuccini’s opera; it serves as a lullaby for Suzuki, the servant of the geisha Cio-Cio-San (“Butterfly”),and for Butterfly’s toddler, as the three waitthrough the night for the return of the AmericanLieutenant Pinkerton.

At the beginning of Act 4, the refugees stand near the border, with Birnam Wood in thedistance. Macduff, determined to avenge the deaths of his wife and children, is joinedby Malcolm, son of king Duncan, and the English army, as they prepare to liberateScotland from the tyrant Macbeth.

In Act 2, Marco and Giuseppe, the two gondoliers, whilst enjoying their life in Barataria, are missing their wives. But when Tessa and Gianetta arrive with the other ladies after along sea voyage from Venice, the reunited couples have a magnificent banquet and adance (a cachucha). The finale is a reprise of the cachuca, here added after a short pianolink.

The themes of Franck's only symphony presentstrong outlines, vivid orchestral colour andexultant climaxes. It has a highly individualconstruction one of the features being that thefinale quotes from the other movements. Thefinale has a sweeping onward drive with a march-like, syncopated main theme. Later the cor anglais theme from the second movementre-appears and there is also a recapitulation of the "motive of faith" and the openingtheme from the first movement. Nevertheless it is the march-like theme from themovement's opening which returns in triumph at the end.

Tannhäuser has sinned, having dallied with the Venus in Venusberg, and goes with agroup of Pilgrims to Rome to beg pardon from the Pope. His love, Elisabeth, awaits hisreturn with his friend Wolfram. This chorus is sung as the Pilgrims return from Rome, and opens in a beautifully atmospheric , gradually reaching its climactic ,before dying away into the distance.

This is arguably Verdi‘s most famousmelody and was reputedly adapted bythe Italians as a song of patriotism shortlyafter its premier at La Scala opera housein Milan. The words are a paraphrase ofPsalm 137 when the Israelites lament theloss of their homeland as part of the storyof the Jews living in Babylonian exile, enslaved to King Nebuchadnezzar.

Fly, thought, on wings of gold;go settle upon the slopes and the hills, where the sweet airs of ournative soil smell soft and mild!

Greet the banks of the Jordanand Zion's tumbled towers...Oh, my country, so beautiful and lost!Oh, remembrance, so dear and so fated!

Golden harp of the prophetic seers, why hang so silently from the willows?Rekindle our bosom's memories, and speak to us of times gone by!Remembering the fate of Jerusalem, give forth a sound of raw lamentation,or else be inspired by the Lordto fortify us to endure our suffering!

Fly away on gentle breezes; fly swiftly, songs of love, to greet our homeland whereonce we lived in hope and knew no sorrow, where once we sang, rejoicing in ourfreedom. There beneath the burning sky languid breezes cooled us, there the cloud-cappedmountains dream above the silver sea; There our days were long and carefree amid the sunlit hills and shady meadows, andthere the scent of roses in the valleys once filled the sultry air with sweetest perfume, and fertile vineyards yield sweet wine. There skylarks sing. Fly away, our songs of freedom.

Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Fearless, mighty, ruthless warrior, hail!Sing his praise, great Konchak, praise him! Fiercer than the scorching midday sun!None can equal him in splendour, none! Slaves and captives all acclaim him -

"Look at those slaves of mine, aren't they beautiful? Captives I took from the tribes ofthe Caspian. They can make you forget all your loneliness, choose any one whoattracts you, and she shall be yours."Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Braver far than all before you!Great Khan Konchak! Praise our Khan, Khan Konchak!

Fly away on gentle breezes ...Braver far than all before you ... Praise our Khan, Khan Konchak!Dance and sing for Konchak's pleasure,Let all people praise him singing! Let all people praise him dancing!Offer songs of homage to our glorious Khan Konchak!

Prince Igor, which was incomplete on Borodin‘s death and wascompleted by Rimsky Korsakov and Glazunov, is rarelyperformed outside Russia. The action of the opera relates to anincident in 1185 during a conflict between Russia and the Tartars.Prince Igor is defeated and captured by Khan Konchak of thePolovtsi but eventually manages to escape. The Polovtsian dances were completed by Borodin before hisdeath. They are much better known than the opera itself and arefrequently performed in the choral version we sing tonight. In theopera the dances are performed by the slave dancers of the Khanto entertain the captive Prince Igor.

STRATHAVEN CHORAL SOCIETY was founded in 1972 by the late David Knox anddraws its membership from across Lanarkshire and beyond. It is affiliated to MakingMusic - the National Federation of Music Societies - and strives for a varied repertoireand high standard of performance. It remains committed to the promotion of music.

Over the years the choir has performed over a hundred choral works, large and small,by a wide range of composers, from Handel to Vaughan Williams. The repertoire alsoincludes opera, part songs and commissioned pieces. The Society has sung on BBC radioand television and has performed in a variety of venues, mainly in the West of Scotland.

In recent years we have hosted visits by choirs from Denmark and Sweden. In each casewe were able to make return visits as their guests, to everyone’s musical and socialenjoyment. Future exchanges are being considered.

Strathaven Choral Society is particularly interested in involving young people in musicmaking and in musical appreciation and has in the past received national recognition forits work with school children and in the community with three consecutive BT/NFMSInnovation Awards.

The choir greatly appreciates the dedication and enthusiasm of Musical Director,Christopher Barr and Rehearsal Accompanist, Razvan Luculescu.

We rehearse on Mondays at 7.30pm in the EVANGELICAL CHURCH, Lethame Road,Strathaven, just up Lethame Road from the traffic lights. Anyone interested in joining theChoral Society would be made most welcome.
