Dr. Hames commented at the opening that the progressive contribution of the Chung Wah Association in providing aged care services to the local Chinese community as well as the Vietnamese community has been excellent.
Hames

As mentioned by the President of the Chung Wah Association, Mr. T S Su, the community and aged care services division is one of the three main branches of the Association. He also acknowledged that it is the passion and enthusiasm of staff and volunteers that have made their services so successful.
On behalf of the Association, the president also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the retiring CAC Committee member, Mrs. Edie Hoy Poy, for her 25 years of contributions to the community and aged care services.
All attending guests were very impressed with the new
office. This may have been because of the contemporary décor or the trendy furniture. It may even have been because of the fun and comical designs plastered on the windows. But none can deny that although there is a contemporary and modern air, historic elements are ever present. Culture and history are integrated into the design to offer a meaningful mix.
There is no doubt that armed with this brand new resource, CAC will be able to continue to support and provide for the Perth migrant population.

Wellness Explored: Walking Your Way to Health & FitnessWe need to maintain or increase the range of motion in our joints. Walking is a good form of mobility exercise. It will also improve heart muscles, lung functions and leg and back muscles which in turn will improve your balance and help prevent falls. Walk for 30 to 45 minutes, three to four times a week. The walk can be broken up into a few shorter sessions each day.
Walking in groups in our day centre is both a good way to exercise and interact with people. You can build up a network of friends and support. Instead of waiting to be served your morning tea or coffee when you arrive, walk to the refreshment table and make your own cup. In this way, you can also retain or retrain your skills and catch up on the latest news whilst you mingle.

The ‘baby boomers’ – the cohort born between 1946 and 1964, has created a bulge in the Australian population of seniors. The baby boomer phenomenon has also meant rapid growth in Australia’s aging population. A new report by Alzheimer’s Australia predicts that there will be 75,000 baby boomers with dementia by 2020. This will dramatically increase the number of employed carers - those who will need to continue working while looking after a family member with dementia.
With these trends on the horizon, there is a great need to increase dementia awareness in the Asian community. Realizing this, the CAC held a ‘Dementia Workshop’ which was specially designed for primary carers on November 23, 2009. The workshop was only made possible with the funding support from the Australia Red Cross Commonwealth Respite & Centrelink Centre. The main speaker at the workshop was Peta Douglas from Alzheimer’s Australia WA.
Peta DouglasFormerly a professional nurse, Peta Douglas joined the Alzheimer’s Australia WA as an educator in 2006. She specialized in providing Alzheimer-related training and information to help increase awareness.
Nature of DementiaAs defined by Alzheimer’s Australia; “Dementia” is the term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses which cause a progressive decline in a person’s functioning.

the profession, a love which was initially encouraged by her sister who was also a social worker.
In fact, her passion already began to emerge when she was attending university in Hong Kong. She generously gave her time to work for clients with disability whilst still studying. In 2007 Rita left her home and all that was
familiar to migrate to Perth. As with many new migrants, Rita had to adapt and change to her new environment but her love for social work still remained. She therefore went on to study a post graduate degree still determined to pursue her passion.
Rita joined the CAC family since 2008 and currently she is the coordinator for home help service and is our assessor for community care services.
As with many young people, Rita loves travelling and her empty pocket didn’t stop her! She started her first part - time job since she was old enough to legally work (16 years old) to earn money to see the world. No doubt, these travels have given Rita many happy and life-changing experiences. They have also molded her into a very adaptive and easy going person. It is this love of the world and easy going persona that have made her a very well loved member of the CAC family.

供的倡议服务是免费和保密的,并由澳洲政府支助;
services aim to contribute to improving the quality of life of clients of aged care services and to protect their rights. Advocare is one of the advocate agencies; they can listen to your concerns, give you information and speak up for you if you want them to. They can support you to speak out on your own behalf, speak for you to service providers and other agencies. For example the Complaints Investigation Scheme can assist you with your concerns or refer you to other agencies when needed. Before taking action, they will seek your permission. You can contact Advocare by (08) 9479 7566 or 1800 655 566 (free call). You can benefit from the advocacy service by ensuring you are in charge of your life, your money & your possessions, that you are treated with dignity & respect, and by ensuring the quality of service you are receiving & your complaints are being actioned.
