Nature Camp by Jackie Taylor The Nature Camp mission is to encourage children’s natural curiosity of the outdoors by engaging them in fun and educa-tional activities.

The Nature Camp programs are designed to focus on new themed topics each year related to the Lake Erie Islands’ ecolo-gy for fun hands-on experiences. Each camp is split into appro-priate age groups: Intro to Nature Camp: age 4 My 1st Nature Camp: ages 5-6 Nature Camp: ages 7-8 Environmental Adventure Camp I: ages 9-10 Environmental Adventure Camp II: ages 11-14

The 2021 Nature Camp Theme is “Everything Under the Sun” Each day will focus on a different topic and habitat fish, birds, geology, insects, and astronomy, with an evening night sky program for campers and their families. Campers 9-14 years old will kayak one day. Campers will be provided professional-ly developed materials (including many hands-on activities) designed to appeal to their sense of wonder and curiosity, con-necting them to nature.

Themes by day:

Birds- Campers will get to inspect a variety of physical bird adaptations- including characteristics of beaks, feet, legs, wings, and colorations while going on a bird hike. AND they will get a chance to design their own original bird!

Fish- Campers will participate in a Fishing Program. The program consists of hands-on participation in four areas covering the ba-sics of Angling in Casting, Fishing Knots and Rigging, Fish Habitat and Handling and Local Information.

Geology- Campers will go on a hike through one of Ohio’s most geologically interesting areas in Ohio, gathering a varie-ty of evidence of the islands’ ancient history discovering wild

caves, rock formations and glacial grooves.

Insects- Campers will be Insect Investiga-tors while going on a hike collecting live insects to observe and handle, and illustrat-ing their investigations.

Astronomy- Campers will get to be As-tronomers for the day. They will join an Astronomer to view the sun, examining sunspots and discover how the sun supports all living things. Campers will also make Sun Prints!

Island Birding with Road Scholar by Martyn Drabik-Hamshare After 19 years of inviting Road Scholars to the Lake Erie Islands, our programs in 2020 were under-standably canceled, as were ones planned for this upcoming spring. However, we are not letting that get us down; we are already planning future programs.

Two programming weeks are planned for this fall - the first time we will run a birdwatching program outside of the spring. We are hoping to attract bird-watchers from all over to find fall mi-grants, see some up-close owl band-

ing by master bander Tom Bartlett, and explore the fun-filled aspects of the Lake Erie Islands. Then, in 2022, our spring programs will return with two programming weeks based on South Bass Island, and one on Kelleys.

If you know any birders (particularly those from afar), let them know about these exciting programs! Updates will also be posted our social media channels. Lake Erie: Birding the Shores and Islands Program #12641 2021 dates: Sep 12-17: Put-in-Bay Oct 24-29: Kelleys Island 2022 Dates: May 1-6: Put-in-Bay May 8-13: Put-in-Bay May 15-20: Kelleys Island Enroll online at: www.roadscholar.org or inquire by phone, 800-454-5768. You can also contact us directly by emailing [email protected] The Lake Erie Islands Road Scholar programs are sponsored by The Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center

Native Plant Sale Need a Mother’s Day gift? Come to our Native Plant

Sale! Planting native trees and shrubs is a great way to provide quality habitat for the birds, butterflies, moths and oth-er wildlife of the islands because they are adapted to feeding on native plants and using them for shelter. Make your land more attractive to birds, bees, butterflies and a host of other desirable pollina-tor species by planting native! The LEIC will be sell-ing extra plants from their native plant sale (to order now visit lakeerieislandsconservancy.org or call Lisa at 419-366-2087). The LEINWC will be selling Milk-

weed plugs to add to your Spring gar-den and help the Monarch Butterflies. Email [email protected] to put your order in today! We’ll also be making seed bombs as a fun Mother’s Day activity!

Garlic Mustard Competition The City of Green near Akron, Ohio has issued us a chal-lenge to see which community can pull the most garlic

mustard in a day! We have accepted the challenge but need your help and lots of volunteers! There is a huge problem with invasive wild-flower garlic mustard in Cooper’s Woods, we need help! The best way to get rid of it is to hand pull it before it goes to seed. Brendan Morgan of EnviroScience will be at the Cooper’s Woods parking lot at 10am to arm us with strong garbage bags. Volunteers will head into the woods after an educational session on what garlic mustard looks like and how to pull it. Bring garden gloves to wear if you can or we will have extra gloves. We will fill our bags, take them back to the parking lot for weighing before dumping into a dumpster so that seeds are removed from the site. After the bag is empty, grab some water and return to the woods to refill your bag. Southgate park in the city of Green is much larger at 200 acres but the density of garlic mustard is much higher at our 30 acre Coopers Woods. With enough helping hands we could win this! Weight will be calculated as total pounds pulled and pounds per volunteer hour. The prize for winning this friendly competition is bragging rights and a sense of accomplishment!

Events are subject to change, please watch our Facebook & website for updates.

*We apologize if we missed anyone, we are working on a full comprehensive list for our dedication in August*

Thank You to Everyone who contributed to the Building Addition! The realization of the building addition & remodel has culminated from years of fundraising and efforts by the community. We could not have done it without the immense support of our donors. All of us at the LEINWC are beyond grateful for every dona-tion that helped bring this dream to life. We will strive to continue to be a valuable resource for the community. Join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 15 where we will honor and celebrate all who have helped make this dream become a reality!
