Term 4 Week 8, 7th December 2018
Dear Parents, As the 2018 year comes to a close, we thank you
sincerely for supporting our school and for working with us to provide the best opportunities for your
children. We have much to look forward to in 2019. We wish all families a safe and happy summer.
Merry Christmas! Kind regards, Wendy & Staff
Year 7 Graduation This coming Thursday evening we will formally
farewell our Year 7 students who have reached the end of their Primary
schooling. It is always with a sense of sadness that we farewell a group of
students, especially when they have been such a vital part of our school.
We wish all Graduates continuing success and happiness in their
secondary schooling years.
Friday Assembly Our final school assembly will be held this coming
Friday at 9am. This assembly is a special farewell assembly for our Year 7
students. With such limited space for parents in the hall, we ask that only
parents of our Year 7 students attend this assembly.
2019 Classes Students will receive information regarding their 2019
placements with their Reports this coming Wednesday and will have the
opportunity to meet their new teachers next week.
The Class Placement process has been quite complex as the
majority of classes are full for 2019. As such, once class placements are
finalised, it will be very unlikely that we will be able to accommodate any
changes. We appreciated the information provided by parents prior to the
placement exercise. Please remember however that parent requests can
only be met if they align with the requests of other families (if involving
specific children) and with recommendations of current teachers.
Staff Farewells Next week we will farewell Mel Pietrobon and Tyler
Dickie. Both Mel and Tyler were new to our school this year and have been
absolutely wonderful assets to our staff team. We thank them both for their
dedication to their roles this year and wish them all the best in their new
schools. Mel has won much deserved teaching permanency at Magill
Primary School and Tyler will be relocating to Melbourne and will be
teaching at Glenroy Primary School.
We also thank our other 2018 contract teachers for their work this
year: Katie Hoffman, Claudia Brewis, Adam Pritchard, Sophie D’Aloia, Jess
North & Carolyn Moore. At this stage we are awaiting news of contract
teacher appointments for 2019. Staffing updates will be posted on our
website during the holidays.

Are you a natural optimist or more of a “glass half empty” sort of person? Most of us
recognise our natural inclination to either look on the bright side or constantly see
the worst in life, other people and even ourselves. The Positive Psychology
movement in recent years has been encouraging people to develop more
optimistic tendencies, as research shows us that optimists often have better life
outcomes. The Growth Mindset focus that GGPS has had for the last few years is
based on these theories – reminding our children (and ourselves!) that problems are
solvable, that making mistakes is part of learning and improving and that we can
always be striving to improve.
Learning to look at things in a more positive way has been one of the conversations
I have had regularly with different children this year. We talk about how every
person has a perspective – this means how we see and interpret life. A number of
people can have the same experience but have very different thoughts and
feelings about it, depending on their perspective. I remind the children that there is
a tool we can use to help us when we want to see the world in a positive way – we
can simply put on a pair of perspectacles! “What on earth are perspectacles?!” I
hear you ask. They are magical glasses (or spectacles) that help us with our
perspective. We can put them on anytime we need to see things from an optimistic
perspective. They can help us assume the best about the people around us or the
situations we find ourselves in. We can even combine our perspectacles with a
Growth Mindset! Doing this, we see that even though we experience hard times
and sometimes struggle to figure things out, there are always things we can do to
help ourselves, like using perseverance (not giving up), trying new things,
developing good habits and asking others for help. School holidays are quickly
approaching and many of us are feeling a bit tired and worn out at the end of the
year. Our tempers can be a bit frayed and we don’t cope with challenges as well
as when we’re feeling rested and refreshed. Don’t forget to put on your
perspectacles to maintain an optimistic perspective at those times!
On a personal note, my husband has accepted a temporary position at a church in
Canada beginning in February, 2019 which means I will be away from school for the
first half of next year. We plan to return to Adelaide in Term 3 and I will resume my
Pastoral Care work at GGPS at that time. We are hoping that my position will be
filled by another PCW during the time I’ll be away. Please trust that they will be here
to help support the students, families and staff in my absence.
I hope that the upcoming school holidays are a time of joy, peace and hope for
each member of our Golden Grove Primary School community.
