STUDYING OPENINGCREDITS!!!

Page 2: Opening credits

The way most opening Credits usually start…

I found that through my research of looking at websites and the opening credits, this is the way the majority of films began with the title cards and names which are always shown. • Firstly the name of the studio which is distributing the film is

shown for example Lionsgate. • Secondly the name of the production company which helped

fund the film or make the film. If there are investment groups or companies which financed the film they would either be credited like ‘In association with…’ or ‘A … production’.

• After this there would be the director’s name, it would either say ‘ A film by …’ or it would say ‘A … film’

Page 3: Opening credits

• The next section to be shown would depend on different things like the main actors may be shown before the producer but this would depend on the contract which they have with the studio or vice-versa. In some cases the title would be shown before the main actors. For example in “Pulp Fiction”

• After all this, it then goes on to show the casting director’s name.

• Second to last the music producer. • Finally the production designer’s name.

The opening credits start before any of the action has happened, with the fast paced jumpy non-diegetic music (Pump It Louder). Firstly an image showing production company ‘Miramax films presents’ is on top of a picture of a man and woman holding a gun. For the other production companies like ‘A BAND APART’ the font is quite simple and the colour is yellow and is on just a plain black background. The first person who is credited is the director, Quetin Tarantino. Then the title card scrolls up from the bottom; The font is big, covering the majority of the screen. Above the title the main actors’ names are shown in a white colour and the font is of a medium size compared to the title, but eventually the title gets smaller and smaller , as each actors’ name is shown. After this there is just a black screen with small yellow coloured font giving the co-stars names. After this there are other names shown like: casting director, music producer, editor etc.

SKY FALL

It begins with non-diegetic sound which is synchronous as it goes with the action that is happening. The song which is playing is ‘SKY FALL’ sung by Adele. The credits appear over the action through out. The font which is used is small simple and plain; the colouring is white. First it shows the production company ‘Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Production LTD.’ The first actor shown in the centre of the screen is Daniel Craig. It then goes on to the next shot saying who he is playing and the author of the book. ‘Playing Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 in.’ Then the title is shown in the centre of the screen. After this various actors’ names are shown separately on the screen in random places. After this in a list type formation, it shows the names of certain roles and the people who had the roles. Like Co-producers, art director. The Last name which is shown is the directors name on its own centre of the screen ‘ Directed by Sam Mendes’.

The Avengers Assemble

To start the opening credits we have the director Joss Whedon on a black background; the text is small and centre of the screen and it also has a metal texture for the font. The action then begins for the opening credits where the names which are shown are the producer Kevin Feige, executive producer and other names with their production roles. After this it shows the actors’ names, the first name shown is Robert Downey Jr. and then the other actors’ names. They are all shown separately and next to an object which represents them. Finally after all the actors are shown it shows the production companies which helped make the film ‘Marvel Studios presents’ and ‘Paramount Pictures’.

What we would do...• As most of the films I analysed are in a similar genre to our

opening sequence, I thought it would be good to use some of the ideas which they have used.

• I think we should add the credits while the action is happening by having the actors first then the other roles like: Director, Producer.

• When our whole opening sequence has ended we will have a title card shown on just a blank screen.

• As our action is quite fast paced we will have fast, jumpy music like in Pulp Fiction.

• As the audience would like to see the action happening it would be good to have our text quite small, maybe at either the bottom right or left hand side of the screen.
