NBAF staff are teaching a series of courses, with a one day Bio-Linux course to be held at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in 2012. This introductory Bio-Linux course will be delivered by Tim Booth and Mesude Bicak from NBAF-W and will most benefit anyone looking to do bioinformatics work in a Linux environment, in particular with high throughput sequencing data. No prior knowledge of Linux is required. What is Bio-Linux? Bio-Linux 6.0 is a fully featured, powerful, configurable and easy to maintain bioinformatics workstation. Bio-Linux provides more than 500 bioinformatics programs on an Ubuntu Linux 10.04 base. There is a graphical menu for bioinformatics programs, as well as easy access to the Bio-Linux bioinformatics documentation system and sample data useful for testing programs. Bio-Linux is free to download from the NEBC site and runs on most PCs. Cost: To be confirmed – there may be a small charge, ie. up to £25, to cover administration costs. Course materials: Printed course materials will be provided along with a Bio-Linux USB memory stick. Computers will also be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own laptop. Interested? Please register your interest by emailing Vicki Lee ([email protected]). Numbers are limited, so register quickly to avoid disappointment. Introductory Bio-Linux Course - Getting to Grips with Linux This course introduces the new user to the Bio-Linux 6.0 system. It includes a tour of the desktop, information on finding programs and documentation, and provides experience running graphical and command line tools. The full day course is made up of two parts: Part 1 is an introduction to the Linux desktop environment and command shell Part 2 focuses on running bioinformatics programs on Bio-Linux and providing the information you need to make intelligent choices about the programs and interfaces you use to run your bioinformatics analyses.

The NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility node at CEH Wallingford provides a range of bioinformatics services for NERC researchers as part of the

Environmental Bioinformatics Centre (http://nebc.nerc.ac.uk). NBAF staff are teaching a series of courses, with a one day Bio-Linux course to be held at the

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in 2012.

This introductory Bio-Linux course will be delivered by Tim Booth and Mesude Bicakfrom NBAF-W and will most benefit anyone looking to do bioinformatics work

in a Linux environment, in particular with high throughput sequencing data.No prior knowledge of Linux is required.
