Faithfull Thoughts

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING FAITH CHURCH?

It is our hope to become an even more vital and effective congregation here at Faith Church. It’s not hard to see that we have the potential for an even brighter future that is built upon our solid 30 year history. That potential is in the pews. It is the people of Faith UMC who hold within them the keys to a successful and effective future. That means you and I have key roles in the coming months and years.

Here are some things I believe are key elements for us to be moving forward in growth of every kind. That means spiritual growth, increased biblical knowledge, missional outreach and even increased numbers of members and worship attendance. We can touch more lives with the love of God!

“Keeping the ordinances of God” is the way John Wesley said it which means to practice regular worship and sacramental participation. I have always encouraged strongly that Methodists practice regular worship attendance…..if you are in town and not ill, then being in worship is one of the best ways you “stay in love with God.” Prayer, communion, fasting and bible study are among the other ordinances of God for daily living. Being here is the starting point. We each can take more seriously our commitment when it comes to financial support of the ministries God calls us to fulfill. Our Finance Team does a fantastic job in managing the receiving of funds and the expending of funds in the life of the church. The problem is that we are constantly fighting the budget battle, more that we should. Tithing is the goal we each must adopt. We need everyone to stretch their current giving toward that tithing goal. It’s time to do that. For example, looking ahead, within the next few years, we will need to reroof the sanctuary building. Setting aside money for that is something we need to start doing now. An increase in volunteerism will be critical for our future. I’m not talking about those who already give hours each week to the ministry of the church. There are many who could step up and serve in greater or lesser ways. I realize it is harder for some than for others. But, we need those adults who are “already busy” to include the youth, children’s and adult ministries as part of their schedules. So many of you are so gifted/talented and can be tremendous difference makers to our future growth. Can you be one of those? Bringing focus and intensity to our Missions programming will help us clarify our identity as a congregation and help increase our effectiveness as disciples who are committed to the “transformation of the world.” We do a LOT of missions work. We could easily do more or do what we doing currently with increased focus and passion on the part of all. Be “inviters” of others to church. This is the single most effective way to strengthen the church missional future. YOU inviting others to join you in worship. Introduce them to people, places and programs in the church. God will take care of their hearts and hopes.

Give some thought to these “elements” of our healthy future, especially over these summer months. We will need everyone to “step up” as we enter the “best year ever” for Faith Church this fall! Thanks for all you do. We are “partners with God” in the work God has given us.

See you Sunday. Rev. John A Brewer

Lazy F is located on 110 acres of mixed forest in the heart of the Manastash Canyon in the Eastern Cascade Mountain Foothills in Washington State and is a quick hour and half drive from Issaquah.

Each year about 80 people head east to Family Camp. This is an amazing opportunity for your family or group of friends to unplug from the hectic world and step into one of the most beautiful

places on earth. The Lazy F camp and retreat center offers fun activities for everyone like hikes to the stations of the cross, tubing in the creek, archery, zip line, climbing tower, golf, fishing in the pond, a

craft cabin and fellowship. This has become an annual summer tradition for many people at Faith

Church and we hope that you will plan to come this year.

You will enjoy playing board games, roasting marshmallows and getting to know other families and friends. If you are coming with your family your children will love the outdoors and the freedom to run with other kids. If you are coming with a group of friends you will love the opportunity to relax

and enjoy the peaceful campground that the Lazy F offers.

If you or members of your family have not been baptized, this is an incredible place to experience it. The natural creek creates an amazing setting for baptism

Missions

During the month of May we have had an added emphasis on service, both from the pulpit and from mission-related activities. However, our opportunity for service is not confined to a single month or activity, but rather the entire year. If you've been wondering where your talents might best be used consider one of the following: Habitat for Humanity - We provide both financial and labor support throughout the year. As members of a multi-church coalition we work on Habitat homes the third Saturday of each month. If you can go during the week more opportunities are available. Our church garage sale, held each September, is one of the biggest in the area and has provided Habitat well over $100,000 in funding. Both donations AND volunteers are required to make this event a huge success each year. Change the World Day – this spring time event provides congregation members a variety of service opportunities; The Sophia Way, which provides transition support for homeless women; 11th Hour Animal Rescue; Sammamish park cleanup and restoration; Pantry Packs and Providence Marionwood pizza party and sing-along. Hands Against Hunger - this mission works to alleviate hunger locally and around the world. Last fall we provided food packets to Children of the Nations, a Washington-based program which aids children internationally. Issaquah Hot Meals Program - Members of the Faith community provide meals two nights a month (third Monday and third Tuesday) to individuals and families. This can be done as a couple, a small group, or ad hoc collection of people. We've served thousands of meals during our involvement with the program and plan to serve thousands more. During the Christmas holiday season, Faith Church offers the congregation the opportunity to participate in Alternate Gifting; where one makes a ‘purchase in a loved one’s name’ which is a contribution to a wide array of charities or the congregation can participate in the Giving Tree where church members purchase specific gifts for our less fortunate families in the area.

Mission Trips - We've provided opportunities for both national and international trips in the past. This summer we will be sending groups of youth and adults to Oregon and Missouri.

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY RECOGNITION SUNDAY:

On Sunday, June 9th, Faith Church will recognize the graduates of the

2013 classes of Disciple Bible Study. These students completed 32 to 34

weeks of intense Bible study through the Disciple I (Becoming Disciples

Through Bible Study) and Disciple II (Into the Word Into the World)

programs. Come hear how these classes have impacted their knowledge

of the Bible and their relationship with Jesus Christ. FORMER

GRADUATES: wear your Disciple Bible Study pin on June 9th in support of our

current graduates and be acknowledged for your past participation in the Disciple

Bible Study program.

We are currently filling in our music calendar for the upcoming summer months. Do you have a musical talent to

share with the congregation on Sunday morning? The choir will sing a couple of times during the summer – feel free to join us any time even if you can’t sing on a regular basis. We also have other small musical group opportunities for singers or instrumentalists or maybe you would like to share a solo or duet.

As always, we have a place for you somewhere in Faith’s Music Ministry! Contact

Pam Sloane ([email protected]) or Emily Cowgill ([email protected])

any time to discuss where and how you can serve in this ministry.

GOT TALENT?

Finance

This May has been a time to renew the commitments we’ve made to God to give of our time, our talents, and our treasure. Help Change the World with Faith Church offered us many opportunities on May 19 to make a positive change in our community… hunger, housing, transition from homelessness, senior companionship and assistance, the environment, and animal welfare. Everyone who participated felt a renewed sense of meaning in their lives by giving their time and talent to glorify God. Where are we on the treasure part? As a congregation, we are fulfilling 85.1% of our pledge commitments so far this year. The ministry and support teams have had to adjust their plans, as we continue to support ministries outside of our immediate community. We have every intention of meeting that commitment when we make our pledge each year. It’s much easier to get back on track in May – and then stay on track for the rest of the year – than it is to realize I’m way behind in November or December. I know because I’ve tried it both ways. If I’m fulfilling 85% of my pledge commitment so far this year, I can still hit 100% by year-end if I simply make my full commitment each month plus 10%, for the rest of the year. But if I kept going at 85% and tried to catch up in November and December, I’d need to double my monthly contribution. Ouch! and right before the holidays. Many members use on-line giving or automatic bill-pay through their banks are able to stay on track through the busy summer season. Grab your favorite Finance Team member if you’d like help setting this up. What about the spiritual side? When I’ve run behind, the tension I felt created a barrier even though I know God’s grace extends to my giving. I’ve found that staying faithful to my pledge commitment helps keep me open to other ways to be touched by God. Are you happy with your progress toward fulfilling your pledge commitment this year? In the Beginning Preschool & Faith’s Mother’s Day Out

June has arrived for In the Beginning Preschool…and the last 8 days will be a world-wind of activity! On Monday, June 3rd we will enjoy listening to 70+ beautiful voices sing their favorite songs for their parents and teachers. This is one of our favorite ways to welcome in the summer! Thank you Teacher Laurie for preparing these children to sing so brilliantly. On June 4th we will be hosting our very own ‘Walk-a-thon” for health in the upper parking lot during our last JJJ class of the year. All the students will receive a water bottle to use during the summer months to stay hydrated and healthy! Thank you Teacher Megan for planting the seeds of good health in our students all year long. Then on June 13th our three Kindergarten Readiness classes will be graduating from the Preschool. Many of these families have been in the program for 3-5 years and some of these students are the last child born in their families, which means they officially leave In the Beginning. What milestones for these young families. Our last day of preschool, we always celebrate with our students as a way to say ‘we love you and thank you’ by putting on a party. June 14th will be a very busy day with the students participating in Lil’ Kickers Field day activities, a huge bouncy, long recesses with picnic lunches on the playground and all around FUN!!!

We have had a very blessed and fun year! It is our humble opinion that as a ministry of Faith Church, we serve this church and outside community with deep passion and dedication to teaching God’s youngest children about Him and preparing them to be life long learners. Thanks be to God, to this Church and to the community for the support that helps us continue to be successful.

Happy Father’s Day! Wishing you all a very safe, joyful and blessed summer, Kathryn and the incredibly dedicated Staff of In the Beginning Preschool & Faith Mother’s Day Out Program
