First principles
Open data allows us to:
— Be transparent— Use public assets to generate new products and processes that
benefit citizens and consumers— Encourage innovation in a relatively simple and cost-effective way— Open up new opportunities for collaboration across different public
agencies and spatial levels— Generate efficiencies in data access as practitioners
Case studies and benefits
Cities that have already implemented successful open
data infrastructures and their benefits:
— Canada: Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal — “Open Data = Open Cities” — Public and Social Policy Benefits:— access to and sharing data increases population’s data literacy—a
skill necessary for success in digital economy— open data allows for production and widespread dissemination of
new and creative research motivated by public’s ingenuity— reinforces both political and bureaucratic government accountability
Case studies and benefits
Case studies and benefits
Toronto software developer used data sets on location and space availability of child care centres to create a daycare search by postal code using texting or Twitter
Epidemiologist developed HealthAndSafetyWatch.com, a website that tracks product and food recalls using aggregated Canadian government open data in combination with media monitoring software
Famous Toronto-based open data project is MyTTC.ca, a trip planner “born out of a desire for free, open access to transit data” (myttc.ca/about).
Vancouver furthest along of Canadian Cities – Opened-up over 100 datasets
“Open Vancouver” portal is itself a space for interactive feedback and discussion space and includes RSS feeds that aggregate city information on Job postings, bike routes etc.
Case studies and benefits
Key lessons
Needs commitment and investment from both city and citizens to be successful
Everyone benefits – Entrepreneurs create new app/tool, city and citizens make better use of public services via an application government didn’t have time or budget to develop.
