CORD: Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter
Larry PetersonOpen Networking Lab
Telco Central Office (CO)
Central Office
Residential
Enterprise
Mobile
• CO is a service provider’s
“gateway” to its customers
• There are 1000s of COs
• One CO may support
– 10K+ residential subscribers
– 10K+ mobile subscribers
– 1K+ enterprise customers
• CO provides a great vantage
point for service providers
– Enables new services
1Central Office can be small or large and has different names in different contexts.
Challenges
300+ Types of equipmentClosed Proprietary
Source of high CAPEX and OPEX
Lack of programmability inhibits innovation
Limits ability to create new services and new revenue
Economies of a datacenter Infrastructure built with a few commodity building blocks
using open source software and white-box switches
Agility of a cloud provider Software platforms that enable rapid creation of new services

5G is not just about making the throughput larger than LTE. It is also about offering user experiences and inclusion of vertical sectors that haven’t been included in 4G so far.
• 5G The use cases predicted for the 2020 timeframe will need new types of “connectivity services” that are highly scalable and programmable in terms of speed, capacity, security, reliability, availability, latency and impact on batter life.
• A one-size-fits-all approach is no longer possible.
5G systems will be built to meet a range of performance targets, so that different services with widely different demands can be deployed on a single infrastructure.
