The Problem with Hackathons

Fixed Time Constraints - limit the quality of solutions delivered, and prevent the ability to participate due to existing obligations.

Cash Rewards - often a great incentive for driving healthy competition, it will also incentivize participants to be in it “just for the money.”

Location in an office building or business setting - this will also limit the participants who are geographically close. Developers may want to work at their home office.

Connections and networking. By being offline, many interactions are in physical reality, and fail to make the future LinkedIn business connections.
