Bowling’s Top Players ToServe As InterscholasticCoaching Certification

Program TrainersGREENDALE, Wis. - The

United States Bowling Con-gress has announced an all-starlineup of the sport’s top ath-letes who will serve as certi-fied trainers for its new Inter-scholastic Coaching Certifica-tion Program slated to beginthis summer.

With the rapid expansion ofinterscholastic bowling pro-grams, USBC High School,USBC Collegiate and USBCCoaching have joined togetherto create the coaching certifi-cation program to address theneed for coaches.

The elite lineup of trainersinclude the following USBC-certified coaches: ProfessionalBowlers Association prosLonnie Waliczek, RickSteelsmith, Jeff Lizzi and DelBallard; Professional Women’sBowling Association players

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, KimTerrell, Cathy Dorin-Lizzi andKendra Gaines; Team USAmember and amateur standoutDiandra Asbaty and noted in-structor Ron Hatfield. Eachtrainer will conduct clinics inthe region where they arebased to help reduce the costfor attendees.

“We really have a dreamteam of trainers,” said Direc-tor of USBC High SchoolChristine E. Zahn. “Those whoregister for the program willget training from some of thebest. It would be like gettinginstruction from Davis LoveIII or Karrie Webb in golf.”

The program was initiallycreated to meet the goal of hav-ing a trained bowling coach forevery high school that has avarsity or club program. De-signed for those who havecoaching experience and thosewho have limited or no bowl-ing background, the programhas been expanded to includeanyone who would like to be

involved in coaching and lead-ing an interscholastic bowlingprogram at the college, highschool and middle school lev-els.

“We are kind of a victim ofour success,” Zahn said. “Cur-rently many programs’ coach-ing needs are being filled byteachers or other educationalpersonnel who don’t necessar-ily have a background in bowl-ing but are committed to highschool bowling programs.”

For those who do not haveany USBC coaching certifica-tion, the Interscholastic Coach-ing Certification Program is afour-part process which con-sists of the following:

*Part 1: One day of train-ing which consists of fourhours of classroom instructionand four hours of on-lanedrills.

*Part 2: Successfulcompletion of USBC’s Level1 coaching certification pro-gram.

*Part 3: Successful

completion of USBC’s BronzeLevel coaching certificationprogram.

*Part 4: Successfulcompletion of the NationalFederation of State HighSchool Associations CoachingPrinciples course, the Ameri-can Sport Education Program(ASEP) first aid and CPRcourses and any interscholas-tic association requiredcourses.

The first three parts must becompleted in order but part 4may be completed at any time. Those already certified asUSBC Level 1 or BronzeLevel coaches may apply theircertifications to the new pro-gram.

“We believe that coachingis so critical not only for mak-ing a bowler better but also tonurture interest in the sport forthe long term,” said Directorof USBC Collegiate JeanneKlescewski. “At the collegiatelevel coaching is extremelyimportant not just for the ob-

vious competitive reasons butit also plays a key role in fos-tering the bowler’s experiencefor future adult competition.”

“Any successful sportsprogram begins with coach-ing,” said Director of USBCCoaching Bob Maki. “Wewant to provide coaches withthe education and tools so theirathletes can grow their skillsas well.”

Interscholastic Coachingintro workshops will be con-ducted upon the request ofschools or bowling centers thatguarantee a minimum of 16 at-tendees. Registration for theone-day introduction work-shop is $99 per person. In thecoming weeks schedule andregistration information willbe available on the high schooland coaching pages ofbowl.com. In the meantime, information may be obtainedby calling (800) 514-BOWL,ext. 3398.

LOS ANGELES–PhillipLebaquin was the best in ourfirst ever event at Super South-west Bowl last Saturday night. He topped a nice turnout of 182entrants at the popular center lo-cated in Southwest Los Ange-les. We had 26 new membersand everyone enjoyed South-west.

The scoring there was huge. The bowlers loved the lanesthere, produced cut scores of+107 for the men, and + 71 forour lady bowlers. We had 49bowlers advance to the semiswhich also added Super SeniorsLouis Brooks, Dave Scott, andMs. Imee Ahorro to the semifi-nals.

Roger Viernes thrilled thecrowd in the 7PM Squad as hehad a perfect game, and justmissed the 800 scratch serieswith a huge 794 scratch. Greatbowling by a fine guy who willreceive ABTA awards for hisfine feat at Southwest.

Leading the Semis wasLebaquin with his nice +142 setwith Thomas Licauco only 2pins behind in second place at+139. So Phil would sit out andbowl for the title with Tom re-ceiving a first round bye in thetop 16 single elim finals. It tooka +75 (men) to make the top 16Single Elim Finals which in-cluded 3 women.

The top sixteen took to thelanes, and losing in round oneof the single elims finals wereJoann Courtney, Chris Romero,Valinda Kelly, Tres Catalasan,Lorenzo Justice, Ping Romero, and Donnie Johnson. They got$100 finishing in 10-16thplaces.

Round two had Imee Ahorroput it to Rene Vasquez (lastweeks champ) 247-201. SolCericos took out 2nd seedLicauco 221-188. Alex Velabested Rico Cayton 216-207.Cleve Johnson was fighting legcramps to survive. Ron Sanchez217-216. The losers of roundtwo got checks of $115 each inplaces 6-9th.

Round three saw Johnsonbest our pretty lady Imee 232-208. Cericos out struck Vela ina good one 252-238. SoAlejandro and Imee were 4thand 5th with Johnson andCericos to meet for the right toadvance to the title game vsLebaquin.

This match was a real strikefest as the lanes still were hold-ing late at night. Cericos, wholed by as much as 40 pins had togo off the sheet with a four bag-ger to edge Cleve who had fin-ished with seven in a row. Whata game! Cericos 269-265 for thewin, and a great effort by bothmen. Cleve was 3rd with greatbowling and Cericos off to thetitle game vs Phillip.

The Match was set for lanes23-24. With bowlers perform-

Franciscospared the 5th and 6th frames, then rolled a big three bagger totake the lead by two pins, sparedin the tenth capped with a strikefor a well shot 213/246 game forthe Donkee championship..Aarik Torres looking good sailedout on a three bagger but alsostuck a 4-6-7 split he didn’t pickup in the fourth frame. He cameback on another three baggerand spared the eighth frame butup popped a 7-9 split in the ninthframe he didn’t convert. Still inthe game he had to have a doubleto win or he could tie. He sparedneeding a strike to tie. Didn’thappen. On a great roll Aarikstuck a solid ten pin to settle forsecond place by one pin postinga 212/245 game. This was a realcliff-hanger. 2005 Storm MixedTournament Offers

New Scratch DivisionReno, NV–Bob Thomas, Na-

tional Bowling Stadium (NBS)Operations Manager and Tour-nament Director of the 2005Storm Mixed National Champi-onships Tournament, announcedtoday that the tournament hasbeen modified to include a sepa-rate scratch division. The newdivision, as well as the handicapdivision, will have a separateentry fee and maintain its ownplacement standings and prizefund.

“Last year, we saw the needfor the higher average tourna-ment competitors to have theirown division and their own prizepool,” Thomas stated. “To ac-commodate players, we createdthe scratch division as its ownentity.”

The new scratch division willinclude all of the events of themixed tournament and its com-panion tournament, titled TheFestival of Bowling. The scratchentry fee is $40 for team, doubles and singles events in themixed tournament, and the allevent fee is an additional $10.To be eligible for the all eventprize, bowlers must compete inall three events (team, doublesand singles) in the scratch divi-sion.

Another improvement thisyear is a limit on entries for eachevent. Bowlers may only com-pete once in the mixed doublesand singles, but may re-enter themixed team event and most fes-tival events up to three times, thereby giving more competitorsa chance to cash.

Events in the Festival ofBowling are the handicap andscratch divisions of the Open

KIETZ KOMMENTSBy Frank Kietz

BUYING A PIN IN A POKE?GARDEN GROVE — The OCBA held its annual meeting Sun-

day, May 22, 2005, adopted their portion of “Articles of Merger”for Orange County Bowling Association of the United States Bowl-ing Congress by a near unanimous vote. The line officer’s presen-tation was convincing.

League representatives asked lots of questions, were convincedit was safe to be protected by a non-profit California corporation.

There were 11 (eleven) legalese articles, two (five and six) werebothersome to this writer. Not really fine print but questionable.

ARTICLES 5 & 6: 5. The Surviving Corporation once incorporated shall pos-

sess all of the rights, Privileges, and immunities of a public andprivate nature of the Merging Corporations. All Property, real, personal, and intangle, and all debts and obligations due onwhatever Account, and every other interest, of or belonging toor due to the Merging Corporations shall be taken and deemedto be transferred and assigned to or vested in the SurvivingCorporation without further action or deed required.

6. The Surviving Corporation shall be responsible and liablefor all liabilities and Obligations of the Merging Corporations.Any claim existing or action or proceeding pending By or againstany of the Merging Corporations may be prosecuted to judg-ment as if theMerger had not taken place, or the Surviving Cor-poration may be substituted in the place of Such Merging Cor-poration as a successor in interest. Neither the rights nor anyliens upon The property of any Merging Corporation shall beimpaired by reason of the merger.

Do they mean the richer entity (corporation) must pay the debtsof the other merging corporations?

The principal corporation being the ABC (local association) couldbe responsible for the “poor” one’s liabilities?

No wonder the transition has been slow. The Fort Hood, TX ofthe USBC local was the first to complete their merger applicationin April?

Along the way the ABC/WIBC merged locals are encouraged totake-in groups such as the proprietors, youth, bowling equipmentmanufactures, consultants, and public relations companies to formone big happy family.

This writer thinks the ABC/WIBC families would be happierwithout their relative’s burdens.

The bottom line: The success of tenpin bowling in Orange Countyor any other county depends mostly on what the local associationsand proprietor group’s managers and volunteers accomplish.

They need help from players, sponsors, fans, sporting public,medical/fitness industry, city, county and state officials — for start-ers, some dirt about 10 acres, enough equipment to fill a moderncenter, an ample amount of promotion money — no pins in a poke!

MicheleTucker won her first Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championshipat La Habra “300” Bowl on Saturday, May 21, 2005 during ourone-day 4 game Beat-the-Board tournament. Michele showed upfor our first squad at 1:00 PM and shot games of 227-287-261-266with handicap good for a series total of 1041 and the $800 1st placeprize. Michele was also in the Win, Place, and Show Pot for anadditional $500 making her a check for $1,300 dollars plus sidepotsand brackets. Lowell Thompson of Anaheim shot a fine 1035 fourgame handicap series to finish in second place for $400 plus $300from the Win, Place, and Show Pot for a total of $700 dollars. Inthird place was Rob Renko of Bellflower. Rob shot a 1025 and got$150 dollars plus $200 from the Win, Place, and Show Pot for totalof $350 dollars for all his efforts.

Our newest Champion, Michele Tucker, is a 32 year old PEteacher at Desert Chapel Christian School and is married to Terry, who is also an ABT Champion. They have two children, Alyssa-who is 10, and Chris-who is 9. Michele has been bowling for about17 years and bowls at Palm Springs Lanes. She has a high game of278 and a high series of 703 to her credit. She used a ColumbiaProfessional bowling ball drilled by her husband, Terry Tucker, atthe Right Approach Pro Shop. Michele wanted to thank the LORDfor blessing her in so many ways. She also thanks her husband,Terry, for his love and support; her children, Alyssa and Chris; andher friend Bob Crame, who has helped her so much with her game.Michele plans on using her prize money for an upcoming trip toLas Vegas. Michele also wanted to thank La Habra “300” Bowl forhosting the tournament this Saturday and the Amateur Bowlers Tour-Orange County Branch staff for running an outstanding tournamentweek after week.

We drew the Mystery Pot of Gold game number and score afterour final squad. Game #1 and 113 were drawn for this week. Sinceno one shot 113 with handicap in Game #1, there was no winner for$1000 dollars. The second chance score was 257 with handicap ingame #1. No one shot 257 with handicap in Game #1, so there wasno winner for $500 dollars. The third chance score drawn was 261with handicap in Game #1. There was one bowler who shot 261with handicap in Game #1, but they were not in the Mystery Pot ofGold, so there was no winner for $250 and the Mystery Pot of Goldcarries over to our next Singles Tournament on June 11, 2005 atAMF Valley View Lanes. EL MONTE–Action Laneshosted the final Junior ScratchTour regular tournament of theseason this past Sunday. Theformat was the same as always, but this would be a doublepoints tournament to turn up thedrama for the final regular tour-nament. With the newly addedJST Tournament of Championsand High Points, many bowlerswould have to make a hugemark on this day to make them-selves eligible for the distin-guished event. With the hugeamount of scholarships that theJST has to offer at every tour-nament, all to the thanks to ourastounding sponsors; StormBowling Products Inc., andB&W Bowling Equipment, thiswas meant to be another greattournament.

The Novice Div. wouldbowl four games, and the topbowler would determine thewinner for their respected divi-sion. One bowler in the fieldneeded to make a huge impactat this tournament to qualifyhimself for the TCHP, and hedid just that. Shooting both thehigh game and high series witha big 219 game, and ended thefour-game set with a 691 total,he put himself not only in firstfor the win, but also qualifyinghimself for the TCHP. Comingup just short of Sean was JeffGlusman in second, with a 656set. Congratulations to Sean onhis first JST win, and greatbowling.

Any point possible meant aton this past Sunday, as manybowlers needed as many as theycould get to not only qualifythemselves for the TCHP, butalso some bowlers had a chanceto make themselves move upand become the division’s toppoint earner of the season.David Phillips was trying justthat, as he shot the high seriesof qualifying with a nice 758series. Susy Montieth bowled anice 229 game to claim the highgame. The top 6 then went tomatch play, as the top threefrom qualifying remained in thetop three, with Phillips keepinghis 1st-place stay. The roll offsaw the first match start off witha 190-166 win from CandiceGalvan over Montieth. Thechampionship match was thenset, and with Galvan absolutelyneeding a win, and a win only,to qualify herself for the TCHP,would roll a solid 184 game todefeat Phillip’s 159 game.Congrats go out to Candice forher clutch win, and awesomebowling out there.

The same could be saidabout points in the AdvanceDiv. as Robert Sickles shot hisway to high game and high se-ries honors with a nice 247game, and a great 929 total.Sickles rode his huge lead fromqualifying into match play, andremained on top for the roll off.All while Felicia Mara took 2nd,Caycee Landers in 3rd, JaredGoldschen leaping from 11th to4th, and Natalie Jimenez round-ing out the top 5, in 5th. The firstmatch was a low scoring affairas Jimenez would defeatGoldschen 180-158. The nextmatch would be an exciting, and close one as Landers got thebest of Jimenez 184-183. WithLanders knowing she wouldneed the win today to make itfor the TCHP, she quickly dis-posed of Mara in the semi-fi-nal 202-163, to set herself upin the championship match.Knowing the way Sickles hadbeen bowling all day, Cayceeknew that she would need ahigher score to win, and wouldshoot that higher game of a 203.That still would not be enough

JST Titles Won ByBeever, Galvan,

Sickles, andSherman at

Action Lanesby Brian Carmichael

though as Sickles bowled an-other great game of 226 to winthe match and take home hisfirst ever JST Advance Div. title.Great job to Robert, and con-gratulations on your stupendousbowling.

The Open Div. saw KevinPeterson shoot his way into thelead after qualifying with a nice918 set. Ryan Council was justbehind him with a 908 set, which had the high game inthere with a great 267 game.Match play had a lot of move-ment as Jared Lawrence jumpedhis way into 1st, while MasonSherman took 2nd, PrestonFukumizu in 3rd, and Petersonfalling into 4th. All four finalistsare all champions of the season, meaning all have already quali-fied for the TCHP. The firstmatch of the roll off went to thefinal frame, and Peterson wouldbeat Fukumizu, 208-200, butwould then fall to Sherman inthe next, semi-final match, 181-221. The championship matchwould be high scoring withLawrence looking for his firstJST title ever. He would shoota solid 233 game, but even thatwould not be enough to defeatthe red hot Sherman, whose 258game would take the win. Greatbowling to Mason, and congratson your third JST title of the sea-son.

Congratulations once againand great bowling to everyone. We would like to thank ActionLanes as always, for being a su-perb host center, and makingsure everything is up and per-fect for us. Also thank you toour sponsors, because withoutthem, the JST would not be pos-sible, and would not be able toaward as much scholarshipmoney as it does. The final sea-son points will be tallied up andposted on the JST’s website,www.jstbowl.com by thisWednesday night, May 18th.Those who qualify for theTCHP will be in highlighted inred on the points list, and mustR.S.V.P. for this great event byMonday, May 30th. To R.S.V.P.simply call Butch or LenniHesketh at (951) 684-7941.Remember that if you do notR.S.V.P., then you will lose yourspot, and alternates will becalled. This event is the nextJST tournament, and has beenmoved to June 5th at New YorbaLinda Bowl. You can get moreinformation on it at the JST’swebsite, and do remember toR.S.V.P. You do not want tomiss this event with a uniqueformat, and even more chancesto win more scholarship money.Keep up the practice and greatjob once again to all thebowlers. Take care.

Abakumoff gave out the sweepstakes money, then Vice-presi-dent Bill Fry gave out the league’s Masters prizes starting at thebottom up to Bob Jones for 2nd place and the champion prize toDarrell Stogryn. Stogryn also got the high qualifier (909) and highmatch series (1002) prizes while Jones took the High match game(268) prize.

It was Abakumoff’s turn again to present the league’s specialprizes, presenting his own team Riverside the league champion-ship prize along with pins from ABC/WIBC to teammate SharonCaldwell. Last year’s champion El Camino Village took the leaguerunner-up prize.

Caldwell also got three, the women’s high average award, most match points won by a lady and most 500 series. Penningtonreceived the runner-up most points won award.

The last league award, the Charles R. Hart high average trophyaward was presented by Abakumoff to Stogryn for the 4th straightyear. While the Hart trophy was in his possession, Stogryn did akind acknowledgement to the league by having a trophy shop redoall the 44 name plates and arranged to have room on the trophy for20-25 more.

Abakumoff asked the bowlers not to leave as there is one moresurprise award. Then he presented the surprised league’s founder,Marchione with a beautiful plaque with apprectation for his 45 yearsas secretary-treasurer. Marchione thanked Abakumoff and all thebowlers but said he already got one in the league’s 25th anniver-sary and this is too early as he might expect one on the 50th anni-versary but at his age who knows.

The league thanks Linbrook Bowl’s General Manager JohnHaveles for hosting our league and arranging to have the banquetat his place. The food was good. The ;eague will meet at a place tobe announced in mid-August to start its 46th season.

LONG TIME BOWLER STEWARD JOHNSONPASSED AWAY LAST MAY 9TH PANORAMA CITY

The sad news of the passing of a good and loyal friend, Steward“Stu” Johnson on Monday morning May 9 in a hospice was teletypedto me by his daughter Debbie. His death came two months short ofhis 86th birthday.

At that I was shocked because I did not know he was in a hos-pice. So Debbie explained it happened so fast that the Friday be-fore, Stu’s long time companion, Kay Oshiro called to tell her thatStu had a painful left swollen arm. Debbie helped in bringing himto emergency room at the hospital where the doctors took lots oftests. Through the tests they found that Stu had cancer in both ofhis lungs so far advanced that he was beyond help. Debbie and Kaywere advised to put him in a hospice where he was there for twodays and passed away in his sleep. It was so sudden and painless.

We knew Stu used to smoke a lot but he stopped about a decadeago. Both Kay and Debbie were shocked because they never knewthat he had cancer in his lungs, as he never complained about hischest pains.

Steward T. Johnson was blessed a good and long life. As a gradu-ate of Tennessee School for the Deaf, he went in construction trade, which took him to several states including Alaska. He was marriedand divorced but raised his two children himself. He settled in South-

ern California, moved to North Hollywood, then to Van Nuys, andretired to a retirement home in Newhall and finally to another re-tirement home in Murrieta to be near his daughter, Debbie. His sonlives in northern California.

When Stu was hooked on bowling, he met Katherine Oshiro, anavid bowler who moved to mainland from Hawaii and asked her tomove in with him. Both Stu and Kay loved tournament and com-petitive bowling and also bowled in deaf leagues together. WhenSo. Calif, Deaf Traveling League was formed, as Stu averaged inthe high 160’s, he was persuaded to join this scratch league in thefollowing year.

So as we lived in the same city Van Nuys, we started a longfriendship traveling together on almost every travel league sessionsand deaf and state tournament years, taking turns in our cars. Whenthe Travel League started admitting women, Kay who averages inthe 160’s joined with us. In most of the years we bowled on a teamtogether. When they moved to Newhall, they stopped at my hometo pick me up or go with me in my car. When Debbie’s job got hertransferred to San Diego, Stu and Kay felt it necessary to move toMurrieta to be near her. Both could not make the long trips to bowlin the travel league and were bowling in a senior league near theirhome.

Stu loved to attend the yearly So. Calif. Bowling Writers Ban-quets with Kay to watch deaf bowlers get honored and missed onlya couple. In bowling, Stu had attained a high average of 185 andwon many trophies, such as Being on two team champions, win-ning both the 1970 Singles (670) and All-events with 1979, andsetting a 1395 then record in 1976 Doubles in Pacific Coast Deaftournaments. He was inducted in the Pacific Coast Deaf BowlingHall of Fame. In the Southern Nevada-California deaf tournament,he was also on two team champions, won 1985 Doubles with 1264and All-events with 1924.

There is one which Stu was proud of, his 25 years participationplaque he received from California State Men’s Tournament andshould have received his 30 years too.

Steward is to be buried in a private family funeral in his home-town in Tennessee. Our condolences go to Katherine Oshiro, Debbieand her husband and brother and his family. Rest in peace, goodfriend.

Flash News! Deaf Jerilyn Keller, San Antonio, TX made 2ndplace in Division I WIBC doubles in Tulsa with partner KatherineVerbele, Exter, GA, They scored 1209. More details later.
