Dongbei University of Finance and Economics is located in

Dalian in North East China. With its beautiful coastal location

and a mild climate, it is one of the most vibrant cities in

China and a great place to live and study. Voted China’s most

liveable city (China Daily Newspaper), Dalian offers a unique

blend of European, Russian, Japanese and traditional Chinese

architecture reflecting the city’s fascinating history.

DALIAN

ABOUT

A centre for trade and finance, Dalian is one of China’s most

prosperous cities, attracting top international companies such

as Microsoft, Nokia, HP, IBM and Intel, as well as major banking,

insurance and security companies. Dalian is also a popular

tourist destination, with a mild climate and beautiful beaches –

the most visited in China. Described as ‘a city built in gardens’,

visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the city parks, lawns

and civic squares, taking in an array of fountains and gardens.

Dalian is also home to three zoological parks, including

Shengya Ocean World.

Xinghai Square is East Asia’s largest square and is where

most of Dalian’s major annual events take place. The city

hosts a number of international festivals, including the

annual International Fashion Festival and China International

Beer Festival.

Dalian has very good public transport – the city’s distinctive

silver buses cover the entire area and are great for short

journeys. Taxis are also a relatively cheap alternative.

The Dalian Tram system, which is the second oldest in

China, is a reminder of the city’s Japanese heritage and

from 2014 a new Metro network will make travel even

faster and more convenient.

Dalian also has good connections with the rest of China.

The Harbin high-speed passenger railway opened in 2012,

and provides a gateway to North China. Dalian Airport has

frequent connections to Beijing (55 minutes) and Shanghai

(two hours), as well as international flights to Japan and Korea.

shopping malls – including Walmart which is just across

the road from the university campus, you will find cinemas,

successful football team in China, having won the Chinese

league eight times. And at weekends, get out of the city and

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... EIMEAR POWER, NORTHERN IRELANDSTUDYING INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

MORNING

I get up, take a shower and get my things

ready for the day. On my way to the campus,

I normally stop at the local bakery to pick up

some breakfast. I live really close, so getting

to my classes is really convenient and quick.

I am studying for a degree in International

Business Management and I’m really

enjoying it. The programme focuses not

only on a wide variety of business related

subjects, but also include topics to help us

to adapt to life in China.

These include spoken and written Chinese

and the ‘Profile of China’ course, which

explores the history and culture of the

country. Classes in DUFE are entirely

different to those back home. In the UK,

university classes can contain upwards

of 200 people and if you want to talk to

your lecturer, you make an appointment –

sometimes weeks in advance.

Here there are less than 30 people in a class

and we are encouraged to always talk to our

professors. This means there is little chance

of falling behind or being afraid to ask

questions if you’re not sure about anything.

At lunchtime I grab a bite to eat from one of

the restaurants close to the campus – there

are so many – offering food from all over the

world. I love Chinese food and really cheap

with huge portion sizes! After lunch I like

going for a stroll around the campus which is

really beautiful and green.

DAY IN THE LIFE

AFTERNOON

After classes finish, I normally head to the

gym. I try to go to exercise classes at least

three times a week. It’s not only a good

way to stay fit but it’s a good place to meet

new friends.

During the week I spend my time with

classmates on campus or studying at home.

It’s affordable to eat out in Dalian and

there are so many places to choose from.

We are spoilt for choice!

At the weekends I go out with friends to

one of the coffee shops, bars, clubs or

restaurants in the city. It’s a big city and

there’s a lot to see!

There are also many western style

restaurants and bars in Dalian. The city

is very popular with business people from

all over the world and so accommodates

for them. But I rarely feel the need for a

taste of home, I didn’t come to China for

more of the same, while I’m here I want

to experience as many new and different

things as possible.

PREPARING FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER

Studying in China will help you develop a whole range of skills

and competencies that global employers look for. We offer

everything you need to meet their expectations, including

high-quality degrees, masterclasses and a range of extracurricular

activities to showcase your achievements.

LIVING IN CHINA IS NOT AS DIFFICULT OR AS SCARY AS YOU MIGHT THINK. YOU WILL DEVELOP A GREAT DEAL OF INDEPENDENCE AND STRONG PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, ADAPTING TO NEW SURROUNDINGS AND A NEW CULTURE THAT ARE VERY DIFFERENT TO WHAT YOU ARE USED TO.

TOPSTUDY ABROAD CONSISTENTLY RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP THINGS THAT EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR.

EXPANDING ECONOMY

China’s economy is growing rapidly – with new job and investment

opportunities being created every year and new international

companies setting up and investing here on a monthly basis. The

uplift in the number of organisations opening in China in recent

years means there are valuable employment opportunities for

you to explore after you graduate. The continued investment and

expansion will also provide plenty of scope for career development

and promotion in the future.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Studying abroad means is the best way to pick up the language very

quickly. Within a couple of months you will have learnt the basics and

if you work hard, within a year you should be able to hold a decent

conversation in Mandarin –the mother tongue of one fifth of the

world’s population!

It is still rare to find non-Chinese people who can communicate well

and by developing your Chinese language skills you will be elevated

above other ‘wai guo ren’ (foreigners) conducting business in China.

BUSINESS SKILLS

The Chinese are well known for their tough negotiation skills

and agile business minds. If you become familiar with Chinese

business practice, you will acquire the acumen to conduct business

negotiations all over the world.

GUANXI (NETWORKING)

It is possible to find work in China from abroad, but job websites

are not the usual way that Chinese people look for work. If you are

considering working in China in the future, living in China will ensure

you will build strong ‘guanxi’.

While you are a student in China, you will have time to make many

friends and get to know your professors (a professor’s pay is

relatively modest, so many have consultancy projects or businesses

on the side). Building these friendships not only creates a personal

relationship, but also a potential business relationship. If a position

comes up that you may be right for, many Chinese people would

rather give the position to a friend of a friend, whom they trust,

rather than to advertise.

MORNING

Every morning I check my class schedule and

the list of things I need to do for the day,

and leave my apartment at around 7.50am

to be on time for my 8am class. I can see my

faculty out of the window; it’s about a five-

minute walk away.

If I don’t have morning class, I go to the

DUFE stadium for a jog. In my opinion,

running 5km is the best way to start a new

day. Other days I like to go to the local gym

because it normally gets a lot busier in the

evenings.

I’ve just finished the first class related to my

major – International Business Management.

Now I have 20 minutes of free time before

the next class starts and so I visit the local

Holiland (the chain of bakery shops) to have

a latte and one or two fresh and tasty cakes.

It’s lunch time! There are so many good and

affordable restaurants around the campus,

it’s often hard to decide where to go!

I normally try to eat in a different place

every day.

AFTERNOON

I return to the faculty to attend my elective

courses. This semester I especially enjoy the

Chinese-language business course in which

we learn how to negotiate and conduct

business in Chinese. This is really helpful to

any student who wants to start their career

in China or run their own business.

If I have no more classes in the afternoon, I’ll

head over to the INTO China office to help

out as I’m a current student ambassador.

I usually spend a couple of hours there to

get things ready for the next social-cultural

activity organised by INTO.

I usually make my way home and prepare a

quick dinner, get changed and head off to

the basketball courts.

EVENING

I arrive at the basketball courts and start

looking for a game to join. I find the

locals are really friendly and always like

international students to participate. The

courts are where I can practice my Chinese

most and make new friends.

I get home and am completely exhausted. I

take a shower and look at my set homework:

assignments, presentations and case studies.

I work on the readings and assignments

I need to complete for my major and then

usually study Chinese for a few hours.

I prefer working in the evenings, so going to
