If there’s one thing the summer brings with it in this region of the country, it’s heat, and in real time we can see the grass withering, and the flowers falling, as the earth enters the hot season. While it’s been rainy thus far, there’s no telling how hot it may get. And yet, whatever the elements may be, whatever weather we endure, whether it’s rain, or drought, or tornado, or lightning, one thing remains despite it all: the Word of the Lord. That thought propels me this summer, as it should you. We have a lot on our plates in this month of June, from Vacation Bible School, to Father’s Day, to being out of school and figuring out what to do with the kids, it can get crazy around here. I, for one, am looking forward to our VBS program, because I get to share the word of God with kids who may never have encountered it before. We get to engage them on a level that we don’t usually get to do, and that’s exciting. Between the stories, the music, the crafts, and all the other activities, VBS makes my summer, and I hope you can help us share the word of God with these kids. God has richly blessed this church, and if we continue to seek his word, to grow spiritually, to act compassionately, and gather in Christian love, we will be a blessing to this community. We strive always to light the way to Christ here, and I hope your path is given light this summer. “The grass withers, the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures

forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) These words spring to mind as we enter the summer

months. If there’s one thing the summer brings with it in this region of the

country, it’s heat, and in real time we can see the grass withering, and the

flowers falling, as the earth enters the hot season. While it’s been rainy thus

far, there’s no telling how hot it may get. And yet, whatever the elements may

be, whatever weather we endure, whether it’s rain, or drought, or tornado, or

lightning, one thing remains despite it all: the Word of the Lord.

That thought propels me this summer, as it should you. We have a lot

on our plates in this month of June, from Vacation Bible School, to Father’s

Day, to being out of school and figuring out what to do with the kids, it can get

crazy around here. I, for one, am looking forward to our VBS program,

because I get to share the word of God with kids who may never have

encountered it before. We get to engage them on a level that we don’t usually

get to do, and that’s exciting. Between the stories, the music, the crafts, and all

the other activities, VBS makes my summer, and I hope you can help us share

the word of God with these kids.

word, to grow spiritually, to act compassionately, and gather in Christian love,

we will be a blessing to this community. We strive always to light the way to

Kazmine Godwin and Kagen Burkett are the 2017 recipients of $500 scholarships awarded by the Methodist Women of Hemphill First United Methodist Church.

Kazmine graduated Magna Cum Laude, with a grade point average of 97.19, ranking 8th in her class. She will begin her freshman year at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas pursuing a career in Allied Health with plans to eventually get a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. A member of the Gifted and Talented program, Kazmine participated in Robotics and Model U.N. and was a member of the National Honor Society as a sophomore, junior, and senior. She was in the marching and concert bands during high school, and played varsity sports in volleyball, basketball, and track. Community and school volunteering as well as working in the family business also occupied some of Kazmine’s life. Kazmine is the daughter of Patrick and Bettini Godwin of Hemphill.

Kagen Burkett graduated Magna Cum Laude with a grade point average of 98.70 ranking 4th in his class. He intends to work toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science with an emphasis on a pre-veterinary track at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Planning to continue his studies at Texas A & M University, Kagen will pursue a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine. Kagen was a member of the National Honor Society and served as its treasurer. Kagen was in the marching and concert bands; selected in All Region Band, competed in solo and ensemble and was a percussion section leader. A member of Future Farmers of America, Kagen held various offices for multiple years and competed in Career and Leadership Development events. Kagen is the son of April Burkett and lives with his grandparents in Rosevine, Texas.

Kazmine and Kagen will also receive either a Bible or a Bible Commentary as part of the Methodist Women scholarships. The Methodist Women are proud to award these scholarships to these deserving young people and wish them much success.

Methodist Men held their regularly scheduled

meeting on Monday, May 15, at 6:00pm.

There were several things on the agenda.

1. The Men discussed their participation in the Church Picnic held Saturday, May 20.

2. The Men will provide hot dogs during activity time on Friday, June 16, 11 – 11:50am for Vacation Bible School.

3. The Men will feed UM Army on Wednesday, July 12th. There will be hot dogs and all the “fixins” with chips.

The auction held on Saturday, April 1 was a huge success! The Methodist Men generated $4800 from this fund raising event. Thanks to everyone for their donations. All the hard working individuals can pat themselves on the back. It was the donors and the workers that made the auction the accomplishment it was. The Methodist Men are proud to present a $500 scholarship to Kazmine Godwin, a faithful attendee of the church. See the article entitled “Scholarships” for more information about Kazmine and her accomplishments.

One opportunity to assist involves helping the church become transformed into Hero Central starting on June 6 at 9:00am and continuing through the remainder of the week. If you can trace, cut or color... attend the Decorating Party…we need YOU!

The craft leaders have asked for the congregation to save empty paper towel and TP rolls and clean, empty plastic water bottles with lids (16 -20 oz) for craft items for each hero in training. Ask about snacks to be provided, and be certain to invite any children in your neighbor or kids you know.

At VBS HERO CENTRAL, we will help our children discover their strength in God through Bible Stories, missions, crafts, games, science activities, music and lots of fun. Youth helpers or adult helpers can work with students of all ages as additional pairs of hands in every area listed above. Sign up for a VBS leadership role and join us in the excitement at VBS HERO CENTRAL. Students or helpers can register at fumchemphill.yolasite.com or call the church office.

This year’s church picnic was a barrel of fun! Thanks to everyone that came out and participated. Thanks to all the workers, and a super big thank you to Wayne & Sue Pynes who not only donated the fish, but also prepared it.

The afternoon was packed with several fun games. The giant “Jenga” competition between Wayne Rawls and Arlie Broadaway got pretty intense. The hula hoop completion proved that ladies can do it too! (No names mentioned, but you guys were awesome!). Pictionary, Wheel of Fortune and Bingo were also on the entertainment agenda.

No one left without their bellies hurting – either from too much food…or from laughing too hard…or both! See you at the 2018 picnic! The Outreach and Missions Team.

Mark your calendars. Our VBS will be held on Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children in Hemphill, but also for your grandchildren to visit you. Call your kids, share the dates; plan for your grandkids to come to VBS. Let the VBS Directors, Janette and George Young know so volunteers can be positioned in the best place. The Youngs also need to know tee-shirt sizes for those working for VBS, especially the youth helpers.

VBS is for Pre-K (age 3 by June 1 and completely potty-trained) through students entering 6th grade. Students who are older are especially welcome to be youth volunteer helpers.

There are many ways you can participate and help: Pray, Volunteer, and/or Contribute. Check with Janette Young, 409.579.3745 or the church office at 409.787.2183 to determine the need you can fill.

Discover YOUR

strength in God!
