OOPL Assignment 1 Title: Demonstrate the linux installation and administration settings. Objectives: 1) To install Ubuntu Linux on Windows without erasing current operating system. 2) To give the students invaluable background knowledge about what is involved in the installation process. Problem Statement: Install, Configure 64 bit Linux Operating Systems, study basic architecture, memory system, and learn basic administration. Outcomes: 1) Students will be able to install Ubuntu Linux on Windows. 2) Have the knowledge about the prerequisite for the installation process. Hardware requirements: 2 GHz processor , 2 gigabytes of RAM (system memory), 5 gigabytes of hard drive space (25 gigabytes recommended), A DVD drive or a USB port to install Linux. Theory : There are several ways to boot the installation system. Some of the very popular ways are Booting from CD ROM, Booting from a USB memory stick, and Booting from TFTP. Here we will learn how to boot installation system using a CD ROM. OOPL – Assignment 1

Title: Demonstrate the linux installation and administration settings.

Objectives:

1) To install Ubuntu Linux on Windows without erasing current operating system.

2) To give the students invaluable background knowledge about what is involved in the

installation process.

Problem Statement: Install, Configure 64 bit Linux Operating Systems, study basic

architecture, memory system, and learn basic administration.

Outcomes:

1) Students will be able to install Ubuntu Linux on Windows.

2) Have the knowledge about the prerequisite for the installation process.

Hardware requirements: 2 GHz processor , 2 gigabytes of RAM (system memory), 5 gigabytes of hard drive space (25 gigabytes recommended), A DVD drive or a USB port to install Linux.

Theory :

There are several ways to boot the installation system. Some of the very popular ways are Booting from CD ROM, Booting from a USB memory stick, and Booting from TFTP.

Here we will learn how to boot installation system using a CD ROM.

Part 1 : Preparing to Install

Step 1: Before booting the installation system, one need to change the boot order and set CD-ROM as first boot device.

Changing the Boot Order of a Computers is done as follows :

1. As your computer starts, press the DEL, ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the initial startup screen. Depending on the BIOS manufacturer, a menu may appear. However, consult the hardware documentation for the exact key strokes.

In my machine, its DEL key as shown in following screenshot.

2. a. Find the Boot option in the setup utility. Its location depends on your BIOS. b. Select the Boot option from the menu, you can now see the options Hard Drive, CD- OMDrive, Removable Devices Disk etc c. Change the boot sequence setting so that the CD-ROM is first. See the list of “Item Specific Help” In right side of the window and find keys which is used to toggle to change the boot sequence

Step 2: Boot in to CD-ROM

Insert the Ubuntu Disk in CD/DVD drive. Save your changes. Instructions on the screen tell you how to save the changes on your computer. The computer will restart with the changed settings. Machine should boot from CD ROM, Wait for the CD to load.

Part 2 : Install Ubuntu Linux

1. Start the installation : Once booted, you will be immediately provided with option to either try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu. Select your language and click the "Install Ubuntu" button to continue

2. Prepare to Install Ubuntu, make sure your system has enough free space (atleast 6.4 GB) , connected to Internet & power source

3 Installation Type : 1) Something else -:- You can select default option , in which data on disk will be erased. if you want your customize partition table ,then select ‘Something else’ option .

If you want encrypt the drive , then select ‘Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security‘.

4 Creating customize partition table by selecting ‘something else’

This is the main window of the advanced disk partitioning tool. This is a standalone installation, so the first task is to delete all existing partitions. If the target disk is a new one and it has not been initialized, select it and click the New Partition Table button.

5. Select the free space and click the Add button

6. Create Boot partition

/boot has been created

7. Select the free space and click on add to create new partition . Note that this step will repeat to create new partitions

We can see all the partitions just created. Before you click Install Now,

8. Install alongside other operating systems. Dual-booting

9. Select your Respective Time Zone

10. Select Keyboard Layout

11. Set the HostName and User Name with the password.

12. Installation Started as shown below

13. After the installation is completed , it will ask you to reboot the Machine
