President’s Outgoing Message

Voting Results and Installation Meeting

Back in November, OSGL had a General Membership Meeting and election. Congratulations to Ethel Chow our new President with Donna Chang as 1st Vice President and Clayton Chang as 2nd Vice President. Our Treasurer Daryl Hu, English Secretary Constance Mark, and Chinese Secretary Millie Ai-Chang were re-elected for another year.

The Board of Directors remain the same with the addition of our previous past president, Edmund Chang, joining the BOD. Our current past president is Jamie Chang who has served as President for the past two years.

There was also a special voting for a proposed bylaw change which called for an amendment to our membership eligibility. This vote has been tabled for further discussion.

My two years as president of Oo Syak Gee Lu went by really quickly. I was very tentative to take this position and the responsibility of representing the Society in our community. I learned very quickly that being president is not just coming to BOD meetings and having lunch with all of its members. You also need to attend all the committee meetings, and attend all the other society banquets and dinners. But these meetings and banquets are not just about eating. It is about meeting other officers from other societies and learning about what each of them do. You form bonds with them, and every week when you have to attend banquets or PR events and you build friendships and personal relationships.

That is what I learned this Society is to me. Building friendships. Before becoming president, I was just a member. I was one of those scholarship recipients who knew nothing about OSGL, didn’t attend meetings, and applied just because Popo and Gung Gung said so. I encourage those families whose children and grandchildren received scholarships, to have them attend our meetings and our functions. It was very rewarding to me and I learned a lot of culture and family history just by attending meetings.

A few years after I received my scholarship, I became Chinese Secretary for only one year before jumping to the role of 1st VP. After another year, I’m up for presidency. Thank you Ed, for teaching me the roles and duties of being a president. Your guidance really made me pay attention to everything that needs to be done. I wasn’t able to accomplish everything I wished, but I hope I lived up to everyone’s expectations as president.

Double Ten Parade – October 6, 2013

Bringing in the Year of the HORSE

Chinese New Year ParadeJanuary 25, 2014

The Hawaii Overseas Chinese (Wai Kiu) together with the Chung Wah Chung Kung Hui and the Kuo Min Tang Society of Hawaii hosted a mini-parade around Chinatown Cultural Plaza in honor of the 102nd Birthday Celebration of the Republic of China (modern day Taiwan).

OSGL participated in this short parade walk around the block and presented a lei to the statue of the founding father, Dr. Sun Yet Sen to commemorate his revolutionary and leadership roles to the modern day Chinese world.

Gung Hee Fat Choy! OSGL marched in the annual

Night in Chinatown parade on Hotel Street, from Richards to River Streets. There

were thousands of spectators lining the streets. OSGL members passed out pencils while parading down the street with Chinese lion puppets and Chinese drums and tambourines.

There were many other societies, martial arts and lion dance troupes, and the courts of Miss Chinatown and the Narcissus Queen. And since it is the Year of the Horse, there were live horses marching thru the parade too!

April is Qing Ming Month2014 Year of the Horse

The Qing Ming Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, which

is on the 15th day from the Spring Equinox, typically falling on April 4, 5 or 6. During Qing Ming, now lasting the entire month of April, Chinese people visit their family graves to commemorate their ancestors through sweeping the tombs and sacrificing food and spirit money to them. They burn incense and perform a ritual offering, while at the same time clearing away plant overgrowth from the gravesite.

The 12th annual Hawaii Chinese Qing Ming celebration will be held on Monday, April 7th at 9:30 a.m. at the Manoa Chinese Cemetery.

The Wood Horse year is a time offast victories, unexpected adventure, and surprising romance. It is an

excellent year for travel, and the more far away and off the beaten path the better. Energy is high and production is rewarded. Decisive action, not procrastination, brings victory. But you have to act fast in a Horse year. If you are not 100% secure about a decision, then don’t do it. Events move so quickly in a Horse year that you don’t want to gallop off in the wrong direction.

If you are born in the Year of the Horse, it is believed that you have excellent communication skills and enjoy being in the limelight. In general,

it is suggested that you are cheerful, popular, talented and enjoy entertaining.

Good luck to all of you in the Year of the Wooden Horse!
