Diamond Service
TreaTed Like royaLTy WiTh
When Ottawa-area blogger Erin Blaskie was invited to bring her family to Casino Rama to experience the world-class facility, one thing stood out for her. From the moment they arrived until they said goodbye, they experienced impeccable service.
I was blown away to see that they were doing as great a job in every area as they were, she said. Every aspect of our experience was excellent.
Jenna Hunter, director of public relations, is not surprised by Erins experience. In fact, the casino is known for its superior service.
It is an absolute pivotal cornerstone of our programming here at the casino, she said.
While first class diamond service is part of every guests experience, all of the amenities the casino offers make it one of Ontarios premier entertainment destinations.
With everything from the luxurious all-suite hotel to the gaming floor with more than 110 tables and 2,500
slot machines; the opulent spa, to a plethora of restaurants and world-class entertainment, Casino Rama offers the perfect getaway.
And, its about to get better. A multi-million-dollar, multi-phase renovation will be complete by late spring of 2014, which will see a rejuvenated and reconfigured gaming floor with wider aisles, a new central bar and a com-bined high limit area that will include both slot machines and table games.
A new rotunda entrance with extended canopy welcomes guests into the facility with easy access to the box office and entertainment centre, as well as the hotel and gaming floor. To round out the upgrades, a new, more convenient valet system has also been implemented.
Now, more than ever, theres BIG TIME excitement at Casino Rama!

Sarah Huter still smiles when she thinks of her son on skis, before he could walk. He actually took his first steps that night, she recalls. He had so much fun on the magic carpet with his dad that he thought, I better hurry up and walk.
Now, at the age of 5, Lukas Huter is a regular at Mount St. Louis Moonstone and will no doubt follow in the footsteps of his family, including his grandfather, Austrian Alpine Skier Josl Huter, who founded the popular ski resort, almost 50 years ago.
Although most kids dont start skiing before their first birthday, Mount St. Louis Moonstone does suggest three years old as a good age and boasts the largest beginner terrain in Ontario, where magic carpets whisk them to the top.
Just an hour north of Toronto, right in the middle of Ontarios snowbelt region, Mount St. Louis Moonstone is a favourite choice for skiing and snowboarding because the Huter family has invested heavily in the best snowmaking equipment in the industry.
They are also usually the first resort to open each season and the last to close. Mount St. Louis Moonstone is known for being family friendly and has the facilities to accommodate skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels. Beginner skiers and snowboarders quickly fall in love with the sport.

People feel like theyre part of our family here, says Sarah. Its a place where you can grow up and you can come back to as an adult and bring your own children and we really cherish that feeling and culture.
For Sandra Poderos, Mount St. Louis Moonstone is the place where she started working and now she and her husband bring their own children there for family time. Forget about sitting on the sidelines while her children play hockey and figure
skate. Every weekend, they hit the slopes together.
Did you know you can get your kids
up earlier on the weekend to be at the ski resort for 8 a.m., than trying to get
them up for a 9 a.m. school
start? she laughs.
Mount St. Louis Moonstone is getting ready to celebrate 50 years in business in December 2014, and will be unveiling massive celebrations and big changes!

Dianne Hounsome has spent her whole life on the shores of Sparrow Lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway. At the age of eight, she worked at her familys tuck shop at what is now known as Bayview Wildwood Resort. By the time she was a teenager, she had made many lifelong friends of the children whose families stayed at the well-known resort that her family owned and still does.
Growing up at the resort was a magical time for her and as general manager/director of the resort now, she sees that magic repeat itself with every family that visits.
After all these years, we still have that family feel and frankly, thats why we have such a repeat referral
rate, says Dianne. Its a warm atmosphere and they get to know the other guests that come.
For many, Bayview Wildwood Resort conjures up a time when full-service resorts were the norm for vacationers on the shores of Sparrow Lake. Within a 90 minute drive of Toronto, this is where families have traditionally come to get away from the stresses of the city and enjoy what nature has to offer.
But its not just nature that draws visitors in. Kids love the summer camp format, and adults can enjoy a full leisure program or they can find activities to do on their own such as watersports, tennis, indoor recreation and pool facilities and nightly entertainment.

The resort had its beginnings more than 135 years ago when Diannes great-great-grandfather Capt. Thomas Stanton settled on Sparrow Lake in 1875, at what is now known as the Sparrow Lake Camp. He started his own navigation business on the Severn River by launching the steamer Pioneer.
In 1884, he moved his family to the south shore of the lake what is now known as Port Stanton - so his children could attend the nearby school. He offered housing to some of the fishermen and Stanton House grew from there.
Bayview Wildwood Resort, as it stands today, is made up of four tourist establish-ments that have all been owned by the Stanton family at one time or another and is now operated by Ron Stantons family.
What sets them apart from others is not only the Stanton family presence to this day, but also the connection the staff have with the guests that come to the resort.

There is just something about hearing your name being chanted, hearing the roar of fans, and feeling the rush of competition that Cecil Starr just loves. As a local favourite in the Ontario Lumberjack Championships, held in Brechin, Ontario, he can feel the love of his home-town crowd when he competes. The bigger the crowd, the better because they really get into it, says Cecil, who has been chopping in lumberjack competitions around the world for almost 20 years. Its kind of neat to have everybody behind you when youre going against some of the top people there is.
Whether the lumberjack (or Jill) is local or not, the crowds in Brechin love to see the participants compete in over a dozen different categories for cash prizes, including three different
chopping disciplines, the crosscut event, pole climb, the axe throw (a crowd favourite) and the ever-popular Water Boil Brechin, where the lumberjacks get a chunk of cedar, a can with soapy water, an axe and matches. The first
one to get the water to boil wins. The crowd loves that one, says Cecil. We like to play it up and make it a fun day for everyone.
With its beginnings in 2012, this world-class event is televised across the country on TSN and features professional lumberjacks from all over Canada
and the United States. A farmers and crafters market, food vendors, beverage tent and live music round out the Ontario Lumberjack Championships experience.

Emerson Benson Nanigishkung helped to revive the Rama First Nation Powwow tradition in 1977. He said that he was working for the Native Canadian Centre in Toronto where drumming and dancing took place on a weekly basis, but nothing was being held in Rama.
The community used to come together for fall fairs, before my time, and this (the Thanksgiving Powwow) is a continuation of that, he said. With the support of leadership and members, a powwow was organized at Victoria Park, a special gathering place in the community.
It was a real community event, he recalled. There was a lot of volunteerism at that time.
The Rama First Nation Powwow has grown into a regional tourism attraction, a competition Powwow showcasing singers and dancers from tiny tots and youth, to seniors.
An important part of Ramas Powwow is the acknowledgement of the veterans, said Chief Sharon Stinson Henry.
We remember and include all veterans as part of our Powwow ceremony. These heroes are an essential part of our community, so their memory, sacrifice and service are an important part of our ceremony each year, she said.
The sound of the drum has been said to have some realism and mystery to it that seems to gather people. Many will

gather to witness the drumming, singing and dancing at the Annual Chippewas of Rama First Nation Powwow on August 23 and 24, 2014, at the Seniors Complex Gazebo Area, across from Casino Rama on Rama Road.
Beyond the majesty of the Head Dancers and Grand Entry, competitions, arts, craft and food vendors, they will witness the magnificent way Aboriginal people celebrate life and tell their stories through music and movement.
No matter who you are, its impossible not to be moved by the aura of powwow. The drumming, the chanting, the dancing, and the colourful regalia is all a reflection of who the dancers are, according to Sherry Lawson, Administrator of Heritage Services, and one of the organizers of Ramas Powwow.
I think it goes to the heart of who we are as human beings. Those stories that we have, those memories that have been passed down to us. They become part of our DNA and somehow, when that ancient drum starts to play, it opens up something in you and your mind and your heart that you cant stop.

Aaniin/Greetings
We are the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, a proud progressive First Nation community. Throughout our history, the Chippewas of Rama First Nation have been known as a caring and sharing people. Our Chippewa territory is the gathering place, where ancient travellers journeyed to seek counsel or medicines, to rest before continuing on, to attend great meetings or witness important agreements.
Chippewas of Rama First Nation is an exciting place to live, work and visit. Our community is located 90 minutes north of Toronto, on approximately 2500 acres of interspersed land on the eastern shore of Lake Couchiching.
From the earliest of times, our people have been entrepreneurs, artisans, craftspeople, fishers and hunters. We later operated as guides throughout the area for tourists, marketing crafts, produce and services.
Today, Rama is part of Ontarios Lake Country and the blossoming business community in Simcoe North. We are happy to welcome visitors to Rama First Nation.
Aaniin/Greetings,
We are the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, a proud progressive First Nation community. Throughout our history, the Chippewas of Rama First Nation have been known as a caring and sharing people. Our Chippewa territory is the gathering place, where ancient travellers journeyed to seek counsel or medicines, to rest before continuing on, to attend great meetings or witness important agreements.

When asked when he first held a camera in his hands, highly-acclaimed artist Jan Novak grins and puts his hand out at about knee level.
Hes not exaggerating. His mother was a writer who worked with a wildlife photographer in Prague when he was a small child, and as he explains, he ended up holding a camera and got attached to it. The attachment grew further when a neighbour had a dark room and taught him the techniques. I became absolutely mesmerized with photography and the camera, recalls Jan, from his Horseshoe Valley studio and gallery.
Mesmerized can also be used to describe how audiences feel when taking in the creative collection Jan and his partner Tamara Scearce have amassed throughout years of immersing themselves in unique architecture, landscapes and natural settings, while traveling all over the globe.
This area is blessed with dozens of celebrated artists that work in many different mediums.
Like Jan, award-winning artist Dave Beckett discovered his talent at a very young age. He began his art education at 13, but believes his innate ability to recreate images through pastels and, more recently, oil paintings, comes from his creator.
I want my art to communicate a feeling of peace, he says. I think most of my work has a tranquility to it.

inspireDave is distinguished for his land and waterscapes as well as still life subjects that continue to captivate loyal fans and consistently attract new admirers. He has been recognized for his work by the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and the Pastel Society of Canada (PSC).
Each year, thousands of art admirers visit Jans and Daves galleries where they can purchase original pieces or fine art prints. Each studio is as unique as the artist himself, and both are on the popular Images Studio Tour every Thanksgiving Weekend, which has just celebrated 30 years.
Behind Daves Marchmont home-based gallery, just outside of Orillia, guests can visit his studio to get a glimpse of works in progress and even participate in the pastel workshops he offers.
In Horseshoe Valley, Jan and Tamaras company, JDN Photography Canada, also
has a home studio and gallery that is open to the public. In addition, their photography can be seen at Abbotts of Craighurst, the Inn at Horseshoe and Horseshoe Resort. They also showcase their work, along with othertalented artists, at Arts Medonte in Craighurst.

Sunday mornings are the best at Pat Loewens house. Each week, her family looks forward to farm fresh eggs, succulent fruit, homemade bread and the bacon that she buys from the Orillia Farmers Market.
Pat equally enjoys Saturday mornings when she meets with friends at the Farmers Market while she shops, enjoys a coffee and the live music. I love the feel at the farmers market, its such a nice atmosphere, says Loewen, who is the markets general manager. Its a very social scene. As one of the longest running outdoor markets in Ontario, the Orillia
Farmers Market has been a cornerstone of Saturday activities in the
Sunshine City since 1842. Back then, local farmers depended on the market to sell livestock, fresh produce and baking. These are still mainstays and the favourites of many, today.
Whether its a unique gift from one of the artisans and crafters, fresh fruits, vegetables and meat, or canned goods and baking, residents and visitors look forward to up to 70 vendors during peak season. Its common for neighbours and old friends to meet at the market and catch up while shopping for their weekly food. They can find everything they need, its really become a one-stop shopping
experience, says Pat.

As they say at the Orillia market, Come for the freshness, stay for the fun. Freshness is the key to farmers markets, which have made a resurgence in Ontario, and certainly in Ontarios Lake Country with four vibrant markets; Orillia, Brechin, Coldwater and Oro-Medonte.
The Orillia market is open Saturday mornings all year while the three rural markets are seasonal.
In Ramara Township, the market brings people together at the Brechin Community Park. You will find fine art, animal carvings, canned goods and baking that are staples of this market. In the village of Coldwater, the Mill provides a river view and historical backdrop for the Saturday farmers market.
While the Oro-Medonte Farmers and Artisans Market offers a plethora of fresh produce and craft products every Thursday at Brennans Inc. When visiting Ontarios Lake Country, make sure a farmers market is part of your plans. You wont be disappointed.

Bob Willsey loves to watch the expression of those who have just discovered Mariposa Market. Smiles spread across their faces as they take in the tin tile ceiling, 103-year-old maple floor, cedar-lined balconies, and are enveloped by the turn-of-the-century ambiance.
The atmosphere is laid back, relaxed and evokes feelings of a more carefree era, and visitors to the store like and appreciate that.
The other thing that catches their eye is the array of products we have, says Bob, who, with his wife Mary-Anne, opened the iconic Mariposa Market in Orillias historic downtown 27 years ago. I dont think theyre used to seeing so many bakery products. The decadence of the cakes, tarts, cookies, loaves and other baked indulgences are simply supreme and
are what first made Mariposa Market the meeting place for locals and visitors, alike. However, the savoury salads and meals found in the caf are now equally enjoyed.
We pride ourselves on offering three things: the healthy food , the over-the-top decadent desserts,, and the comfort foods, says Bob, noting that he enjoys a treat or two himself.
The 19th Century building is a cornerstone of the busy shopping district and had its beginnings as a bakery almost 150 years ago, when it was George Vicks General Store between 1859 and 1929. There are

still photographs of the store and the Vick family on the walls of Mariposa Market. When the Willseys first opened as a small bakery in 1987, they had no idea it would become the favourite spot it is today. Over the years, with the purchase of the buildings on either side, it has grown to about 10,000 square feet of space that includes a bakeshop and caf, a home decorating store, and a shop of homemade soaps and candles.
Bob is mindful of the rich history of the buildings that make up Mariposa Market,
The Scent Shop and Seasons Shop and he feels its important to preserve the heritage feel. While he loves to watch a new visitors first experience, he also enjoys the regulars he sees. I never envisioned it would be this popular, that it would become such a meeting spot for the people of Orillia and visitors, he says. Were certainly honoured and pleased that it did.
