President's Message

The past few months have been quite a challenge for anyone trying to make dry hay and get it into the barn. The price of corn has eased and the Canadian dollar is less than par which should bode well for anyone that will be marketing calves this fall.

The Simmental Innovations fi eld day held at the Elora Research station was well attended with over 60 people in attendance. The information present-ed featured the research initiatives being conducted by the Canadian Sim-mental Association (CSA) on net feed effi ciency, meat quality and fertility and was eye opening to say the least. Other research being conducted by animal scientists and graduate students was also displayed such as ther-mal images to detect animal body temperatures, to heart rate monitors, examination of fecal samples, individual feed intake, right through to on site gathering of rib samples at Cargill. One test in particular involved the manual counting of 300,000 cells by two grad students. Through its Simmental Innovations program the CSA is sharing and gath-ering information with labs and universities from around the world. We should all be proud to be part of this exciting endeavour that is positioning Simmental as a leader in the Canadian beef industry.

The show season has already started and those of you who will be attend-ing the Royal will soon be deciding which of your animals will be making the journey to Toronto.

Thanks to Clare Sullivan for donating a heifer to be sold at the Royal Sale.We continue to advertise in the Ontario Beef magazineand the Cattle feeders publication”The News Feed” We are always trying to fi nd new information and advertisements that refl ect the availability of superior Sim-mental genetics. OSA is willing to pay $500.00 for any ads that are forwarded and are then used for any of our advertisements.
