2013 EXPLORATION OUTLOOK
The Ontario Prospectors Association (OPA) is looking toward 2013 as a comeback year for the early exploration sector. The commodity prices are still high and the demand on Canadian commodities is still strong. A quick look around Ontario shows there are numerous advanced projects moving toward production or expanding production.
Another interesting trend is the merger and acquisitions of interesting projects by various companies allowing these to be fi nanced and moved forward. Good examples of this are the acquisitions of Coventry Ventures of gold projects in the Cameron Lake-Rainy Lake area, Osisko of the Brett Resources Hammond Reef project, Stillwater of the Marathon PGM project, Cliffs of the Freewest Chromite projects in Ring of Fire, Argonaut Gold in the Wawa area, Iamgold of Trelawney’s Cote Lake and Osisko of Queenston; to name a few!
The Mines and Minerals Directory is a valuable source of data for explorers, suppliers and job searchers. The OPA is pleased to have Naylor publish this document for our members. We would also thank the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and the advertisers within the magazine for their support in completing the magazine.
Please join us at our Symposia being held in Ontario.

Minister’s MessageMinistry of Northern Development and Mines
Ontario a Premier Mining Jurisdiction
January 2013
Mineral developers know that Ontario is one of the premier mineral investment jurisdictions in the world, which is why they have made it Canada’s leader in mineral exploration. Our province accounted for 21 per cent of the country’s non-fuel mineral production in 2011 with a value of about $10.7 billion. In 2011, exploration spending in the province reached a record $1 billion and it will be close to that again in 2012. It is expected that about 25 per cent of all exploration and mineral deposit appraisal dollars invested in Canada will be spent here.
Investing in mineral exploration and development in Ontario pays off. Ontario ranks among the top 10 world producers of platinum, nickel and cobalt, and among the top 20 producers of gold, silver, copper and zinc. We are also part of a select group of jurisdictions that produce, process and market diamonds. Moreover, our mining sector employs about 27,000 people directly and another 50,000 indirectly. Many communities, particularly in Northern Ontario, thrive on mining activity. With this in mind, the Government of Ontario is focusing on helping the mining industry open at least eight new mines over the next 10 years. Three mines have opened recently. In fact, over the last decade, more mines opened here in Ontario than anywhere else in Canada. With 42 mines currently operating in the province, we are the nation’s largest producer of non-fuel minerals and a global mining force.
In our view, the best is yet to come. Exciting discoveries in the Ring of Fire area in Northern Ontario hold the promise of Canada’s fi rst world-class chromite deposit along with strong potential for nickel, copper, zinc, gold and other deposits. In consultation with First Nations, we look forward to unlocking its potential and creating thousands of jobs in the North.
Our government is committed to advancing mineral development for the benefi t of all Ontarians. To that end, in consultation with stakeholders, we are modernizing elements of our Mining Act, and developing regulations that promote sustainable mineral activity that respects the environment, Aboriginal and treaty rights, communities and individuals. With balanced and equitable guidelines, the modernized Mining Act is bringing greater clarity and certainty for the mining industry. Furthermore, we continue investing in important services such as geological mapping and the digitization of geoscience information to help Ontario’s mineral exploration sector identify new mineral deposits.
Our superior mineral endowment supports a dynamic mining sector, rich with knowledge and expertise that has fl ourished for more than a century. With exciting new mineral discoveries and our government’s commitment to promoting sustainable mineral development, we look forward to a bright future for mineral development in the province.

Geo Data Solutions Inc. (GDS) offers a wide range of geophysical and geochemical services for resource exploration and environmental assessment. GDS specializes in ixed-wing and helicopter borne geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling and data processing, GDS can also provide exhaustive data interpretation.
GDS’s senior personnel own decades of experience in providing exploration services worldwide. Regular clients include international organizations, governmental agencies, and major/junior exploration companies.
GDS combines this broad and deep experience over hundreds of projects with state-of-the-art ield equipment to acquire the best-possible data even in the most challenging conditions. Professional geoscientists based at Laval data-processing centre follow the highest international standards to produce timely and reliable maps and reports. This newly built data-processing center covers more than 6500 square foot.
Large-scale aeromagnetic surveying is the most popular service provided by GDS. These surveys often are part of national programmes of geological and structural mapping.
GDS uses twin-engine ixed-wing aircraft for these surveys, carefully prepared to make maneuver noise negligible in high sensitivity measurements of single magnetometer or magnetic gradient arrays. GDS is among the most eficient aeromagnetic surveyors in the world, delivering excellent data at low cost.
Gamma-ray spectrometry is a frequent adjunct to the aeromagnetic surveying. Potassium, thorium and uranium signals aid in inferring geology, and can be of primary importance in the exploration for nuclear fuels, disseminated base/precious-metals, and rare-earth elements. Gravity surveying is also a signiicant service offer by GDS.
ver rugged terrain, GDS ly similar surveys using helicopter platforms. A combination of electromagnetic, magnetic and gamma-ray spectrometric methods can then be lown simultaneously in order to optimize mobilization and data acquisition costs. Data interpretation results get from the aggregation of several geophysical techniques represent a clear gain in identifying potential exploration targets. Again, logistical expertise and operational eficiency allow GDS to deliver exceptional results throughout this range of services.
Since 2007, GDS has executed most of the aircraft-supported geochemical surveys lown in eastern Canada, along with extensive aeromagnetic surveys in northern Canada, regional helicopterborne surveys in the Canadian cordillera and over 11,000 line-km of airborne gravity survey. In total, GDS acquired over 1 million line-km of magnetic/radiometric/electromagnetic/gravity survey and gathered more than 23,000 lake-bottom sediment samples.
GDS builds its surveying systems with components that have the highest market sensitivity and reliability. Aeromagnetic systems incorporate Geometrics or Scintrex
Cs-vapor magnetometers and RMS compensators. For gamma-ray spectrometric surveys, GDS uses Radiation Solutions spectrometers which are considered by the geophysicist community as the best instrument available on the market. For electromagnetic surveys, GDS uses a proprietary system (ProspectEM) characterized by a compact transmitter, for better manoeuvrability over rough terrain, with a strong dipolar moment allowing exploration depth of about 200 m.
GDS maintains its systems, develops new technology and processes large-volumes of survey data to inal form at its head ofice in Laval. GDS uses Geosoft for inal processing and map-making, and has large-format color plotters for hard-copy requirements.
GDS attributes its ability to grow during challenging times to the orientation of its personnel to survey operations. Senior personnel remain directly involved in survey planning and support, creating a ield environment that enables GDS to attract and retain the most skilled and productive operators. The safety record of GDS is among the best in the industry.
GDS responds to the airborne survey requirements of its customers by assembling the best systems and crews for data acquisition and processing. The productivity of its equipment and personnel enable GDS to provide excellent results at competitive prices.
