THE SCIENCE OF BEING • THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY 2 IONS 2015

Dear IONS Community,

For millennia, people have made pilgrimages to attend collective festivals with members of their overlapping tribes. Brought together from the ends of the known world, often traveling for many miles, the instinct to come together to share, learn, connect, and celebrate is deep in our bones.

Now, science is increasingly confirming the wisdom of this instinct to come together. We now know that happiness and well-being are contagious! Experiencing ourselves as part of a larger community brings us into greater wholeness, supports the emergence of our highest selves, and stimulates us to grow. When we come together with strong shared intentions, like tuning forks, we can create a collective vibration that elevates each of us individually. Awesome!

When Apollo 14 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell founded IONS, along with a small group of visionary individuals, they shared the conviction that to create a just and sustainable planet, a fundamental shift in consciousness – a global mind change – would be necessary. A shift that recognizes and harnesses the power of the mind and our worldviews; one that values the connection between science and spirituality; and one that recognizes our essential interconnectedness and inspires people to take action to help humanity and the planet thrive.

You are an essential member of this worldwide group of visionaries. And by coming to this conference, you represent thousands more all around the world who are working together to bring from potentiality to actuality, a world where all beings are valued and cared for.

At this, IONS 16th International Conference, we join together to passionately investigate the ideas that hold the greatest urgency and mystery for us all, to courageously develop new ways to live deeply, and to support the thriving of future generations.

I encourage you to make your experience at this conference an experiment. Open your heart and your mind. Share your passions and questions with vulnerability and authenticity. Try something new! Savor each moment. Revel in curiosity. Enjoy paradoxes, and “play in the grey” areas between black and white. Keep an eye out for synchronicities. Allow yourself to renew, refresh, and be nourished in mind, heart, and spirit.

Above all, have fun!

Thank you for coming. We can’t wait to play with you, as we engage deeply in co-creating our future together and beyond.

Cassandra Vieten, PhD

Do you work with youth? Would you like to add some inspiring content to your tool box and give your kids a whole new way of looking at and experiencing the world? Social -emotional competencies are essential to prepare youth for this highly interconnected and diverse world. Worldview Explorations prepares youth to navigate and thrive in a global society by exploring the influence perspective has on our behaviors, relationships, and experiences. 7THE SCIENCE OF BEING • THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY IONS 2015

W1 – MYSTERY SCHOOLWESTMONTDeborah Jones

Living awake entails far more than reading about enlightenment or developing mental concepts of what living awake means. Living spiritually awake is an embodied awareness from which conscious thought, word, and action emerge. How can you live awake? Your body

contains a vast warehouse of ignored wisdom. Your energy field, comprised of vibrational bandwidths, is rarely explored. Each bandwidth offers a specific interior view of your exterior interpretation and judgment. In this experiential workshop, you will cultivate an awareness of energetic fields as a felt-sense in your body and acquire skills to navigate these fields, allowing you to move from reactivity into a grounded and awake capacity to meet life consciously.

W2 – SUPERNORMAL: SCIENCE, YOGA,AND HUMAN POTENTIAL WINDSORDean Radin, PhD and Lakshmi Angela Norwood, MEd

Do we all have the potential to manifest extraordinary abilities? Recent cutting-edge science supports claims in ancient yogic texts suggesting that “super” abilities are not only real but also attainable by ordinary people. In a one-of-a-kind workshop, IONS Chief Scientist Dean Radin joins Lakshmi Angela Norwood—spiritual mentor, teacher, and hatha yoga practitioner—to explore how empirical evidence is shedding light on practices we can use to realize these abilities.

IONS COMMUNITY GROUP PRE-CONFERENCE EVENTMARQUIS TENTWednesday, July 22, 2015 – 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM($49 workshop fee includes dinner)

If you are an IONS Community Group leader or an IONS member interested in starting a Community Group in your area, please join us for an evening of connecting and learning from one another. Through a combination of presentations, structured sharing, experiential activities and informal social time, this workshop will feature current Community Group activities, and include opportunities for telling the stories of our successes and the wisdom of our best practices. We will also look at our challenges and share ways to overcome them. Together we will create innovative ways to share resources and strengthen communication with IONS and its worldwide Community Groups.

WEDNESDAY PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM, Wednesday, July 22, 2015

W3 – GREENHEART CHICAGO TOURMEET IN BUTLER Emanuel Kuntzelman and Andrea Dennis

Take a ride with Greenheart and experience Chicago from a socially conscious perspective. First stop, the acclaimed Baha’i Temple. Then cruise down Lake Shore Drive to a dynamic social enterprise for a tour and discussion on what happens when mission meets the marketplace. Up next, a secret stone spiral on the lakefront. There we’ll enjoy a picnic of organic foods and a talk on transformative leadership and then close our day with a mediation. Although the Greenheart Chicago experience ends here, those wishing to carry on can visit a museum, take a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour, or traipse around downtown. There will be two Chicago departures for the hotel, at 2:30 PM and 9:00 PM, in case you’d like to explore downtown Chicago.  (A $56 transportation supplement will be added)

THE SCIENCE OF BEING • THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY 8 IONS 2015

THURSDAY PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS 9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM, Thursday, July 23, 2015

T1 – “TAPPING” INTO YOUR INNER RESOURCES: Energy Psychology Approaches for Self-Care and Self-Evolution AUGUSTARobert Schwarz, PsyD, DCEP

There are lots of books and videos that tell you what you ought to do to be more evolved. The problem is that we often can’t do what we know we should. In this experiential workshop, you will learn how to use Energy Psychology approaches, including the

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and other tapping approaches, to reduce overwhelming negative feelings and to transform painful and stressful memories and incidents so that you can connect with your best, or higher, self. You will also learn techniques to identify and remove the most common forms of unconscious blocks to everything.

T2 – LIVING A NOETIC LIFE: Principles and Practices for Personal and Social Transformation PEBBLE BEACHMarilyn Schlitz, PhD

What are the inner skills and capacities we need to fully flourish in a world filled with mind-boggling challenges and complexities? How can we identify and nurture the qualities we wish to embody? Where might we find barriers that keep us from reaching our fullest dreams and potentials—and what can we do to break through these

obstacles? This workshop invites participants to draw on their own noetic insights and experiences to address these fundamental questions. Based in research on worldview transformation and healing, the workshop will offer reliable guideposts for navigating change. We will engage in practices for increasing resilience, enhancing personal growth, deepening interpersonal relationships, and clarifying our engagement with life and work.

T3 – CULTIVATING ENERGY WISDOM FOR HEALTH, HEALING, AND HAPPINESSWESTMONTMingtong Gu

Master Mingtong Gu will guide you on an experiential path that unites consciousness and energy—a union he calls “energy wisdom.” You will learn the powerful ancient practice of Wisdom Healing Qigong, which combines mindful movement, sound healing, visualization, and

meditation. Transform limited and blocked energy patterns into healthy energy that flows throughout the physical and energetic bodies. This process can awaken us to self-healing and self-realization.

T4 – THE NEXT STEP IN CONSCIOUSNESS EVOLUTIONWINDSORBarbara Marx Hubbard

Ms. Hubbard will present an overview of our planetary evolution, identifying where we are right now in our life cycle. What is the meaning of our new crises? Where is the emergent potential leading us? How can we not only respond to these crises but also use

them as evolutionary drivers to discover and enact the next stage of human evolution? The Wheel of Co-Creation will be used as a participatory model for entering our vocations of choice, seeking common goals, and matching needs with resources to set a template for a more synergistic democracy. We will examine the growing edge of our spiritual, scientific, and technological capacities as extended potentials of the universal species we are becoming.

9THE SCIENCE OF BEING • THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY IONS 2015

THURSDAY COMMUNITY DINNERMARQUIS TENT 6:00 PM TO 7:15 PM

THURSDAY EVENING GENERAL SESSIONGRAND BALLROOM7:30 PM TO 9:30 PM

We are in the midst of a consciousness revolution. And by attending this conference, where the science of being meets the spirit of community, YOU are at the heart of it. Inspired by the transformation he experienced in his spacecraft in 1971 as he returned from his

moonwalk, Edgar Mitchell (joining us remotely) has been pioneering the scientific investigation of a new perspective on reality since that day. Put simply, we’ve been taught that the universe is made of matter and energy. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that it is made of matter, energy, and consciousness. Dr. Mitchell will share his perspective as one of eight surviving individuals who have journeyed farther from our planet than anyone in history!

IONS President and CEOCassandra Vieten will share how IONS is impacting the world through frontier science, transformation education, experiential learning, and community. As the power of our awareness, attention, and

intention begins to permeate every corner of society, how can we wisely navigate and collaborate to accelerate this emerging shift in global consciousness?

Tim Boyd brings us a perspective from one of the longest-lasting and most venerable organizations that has since 1875 engaged in the study of comparative religion, philosophy, and science and explored unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent

in humanity. Now, the Theosophical Society has members in seventy countries around the world. Mr. Boyd will share a number of ways to pursue the unfoldment of consciousness. To some, it is a scientific process; to others, it is an art. Is it possible to harmonize our experiences of transcendence and wonder with the science of today?

SPOTLIGHT TALKSPRINCE OF WALES8:00 AM TO 9:00 AM

Emerging scientists and social innovators will share short presentations on their noetic projects and passions with peers. Topics - ranging from the mind’s influence on the ecosystem, to the enduring relevance of ancient practices and infusing spirit into existing social structures- will raise conscious awareness and instigate positive change. Continental breakfast buffet available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on first come basis. Evomimicry - Steve MelvilleResponding to global crises demands extraordinary levels of global cooperation. Despite barriers, evolution has manifested cooperation at an ever-increasing degree, scale and complexity. Inspired by the model of Biomimicry, which probes the question: “How has nature solved this design problem?” Evomimicry asks the question: “How has evolution overcome this barrier to cooperation?” This Spotlight will identify barriers to cooperation, characteristics of an ideal cooperative mechanism, and conditions under which global cooperation could emerge.

Greenheart International - Haldis Toppen Greenheart International has many divisions that all work as a global nonprofit that connects people and planet to create global leaders. The purpose of this presentation will be to inspire and engage the audience to understand how the power of service facilitates a more enriching experience for communities and global citizens to become leaders.

The Mind’s Map: Shapes of Changing Times -Lois StarkTo think out of the box, you have to know the box you are in. Humans make sense of the world, by finding a shape that fits our time, a pattern to organize and orient us. A web mirrors indigenous cultures mental map—cycling, interconnected, whole. A ladder fits urban humans’ worldview—hierarchal, measured, linear. A helix matches our moment of spiraling change, merging the web’s circle and the ladder’s line. Today, our lens enlarges to the space age, seeing whole systems with a spherical view. The blur from spiraling change snaps into the beauty of the big picture. Shape alerts us to the boxes we are locked in. Now we see that we shape our world, then that shape shapes us.

perception. This shift transforms you into a new kind of human, living in a reality that functions according to new rules. Learn the differences between “old linear perception” and “new spherical-holographic perception” and how to change your reality with skillful attention.

F9/S9 – From the Campfire to the Movies: Consciousness, Cinema, and StorytellingPINEHURSTMaurizio Benazzo, Zaya Benazzo, and Nick Day

A radical new “human mythology” is shaping the current era through various forms of storytelling. Inspired by mystics of all traditions, informed by modern science, free of dogmas and firm beliefs, open to the the mystery of life, and embedded in a profound sense of awe We are redefining our role in this interconnected world. Science and Nonduality (SAND) is one of the containers in which this dialogue is developed. Zaya and Maurizio will present their experience as the founders of SAND. Providing a broader frame and with references to archetypes, myths and quantum science, award-winning filmmaker Nick Day looks at the evolutionary role of storytelling. Story activates a powerful inner world of association and meaning, helping us to empathize with others, successfully navigate the world becoming a vehicle for conscious awakening.

Friday only!F12 – A Very Personal Example of TransformationWINDSOR Lou Ferrante

In this two-hour breakout session, Ferrante will recap his life of crime and entry into the Gambino crime family. He will

also recall the years he spent in some of the country’s most violent penitentiaries, where he read his first book and slowly rewired his brain by reading thousands of books, listening to hundreds of lectures, and practicing the ancient and simple art of contemplation.

Saturday only!S12 – Olokun Rising: Guidelines for Creating a Culture of Consequence WINDSORLuisah Teish

In the traditions of the African diaspora, Ocean deities send us dreams that reveal the messages of the ancestors. Teish

will share stories about these dream deities, interpret some of the symbolism, and provide recommendations for manifesting the messages received.

We are in the midst of a consciousness revolution. Can you feel it? A new generation of young scientists are standing on the shoulders of giants and ready to leap! A widespread grassroots, open-source, citizen science movement to discover the furthest reaches of human potential is under way. Explore how the boundaries between inner and outer, heart and mind, and silos of scientific disciplines

are being erased in favor of still rigorous but more holistic and transdisciplinary methods for conducting frontier science and translating it into applications relevant to our everyday lives.

The Nature of Consciousness Federico FagginIf consciousness is an irreducible aspect of the energy of which space, time, and matter are made, how is our worldview going to change? Can this assumption lead to a coherent

conceptual structure that suggests the appropriate mathematical theory, where physical reality is produced by consciousness rather than the other way around?

A Cosmology of Connection Drew DellingerWhat connects ecology and social justice, indigenous wisdom and contemporary science, and the vision of Martin Luther King Jr. and the photographs of earth taken from outer space?

Despite their differences, each of these calls us to transform our culture and to move from a worldview of separation to a cosmology of interrelationship. In this talk, Drew Dellinger will link ecology, justice, and cosmology to show how changing our worldview is a critical step in changing our world.

Evolutionary SpiritualityBarbara Marx HubbardWhat are the evolutionary indications of our emergence as a new humanity facing devolution or conscious self-evolution? Ms. Hubbard will discuss the advent of evolutionary spirituality as a vital

component of social and scientific evolution.

Electromagnetic energy fields of microtoroid cavities used as a molecular model for understanding energy coherence, diseasepathogenesis, and healing in real- time. - Rasheeda Hawk, PhDElectromagnetic fields are produced by the atoms found in physical structures. These electromagnetic currents exist in the shape of torus allowing for a stable but interactive type of energy state. These torus energy shapes are naturally occurring and surround the entire earth, physical bodies, and molecules themselves. In this present work, we fabricated a silica-based microcavity in the shape of a torus known as a microtoroid cavity. Microtoroid cavities are able to confine light at specific frequencies creating an evanescent electromagnetic field around the microtoroid device similar to what is found in nature. We have recently used these micro-resonator cavities as biosensors to detect epigenetic nucleotides at picomolar levels in real- time. There are applications of this model for understanding healing modalities of the super-symmetry principles found in sacred geometry.Mental Weather Influence - Daniel CaputiMental Weather Influence, defined as the attempt to influence weather using solely mental intentions or states of consciousness, has hardly been studied scientifically despite the practice being prominent in many cultures over thousands of years. Small effect sizes of human precognitive and psychokinetic effects have been fairly rigorously demonstrated in laboratory settings, and the question now turns to what the physical mechanisms behind these phenomena are and how they can be applied to real-world situations. Studying the earth’s atmosphere may advance our knowledge of consciousness, and our understanding about the physics of the atmosphere. Transformational Leadership And The Need For Soul In Organizations - Annette SchaferSince 1990 I have immersed myself in researching the congruence between new physics, the deep truths of ancient spiritual traditions, philosophy, psychology, and theories of mind and consciousness. It is urgent that a critical mass of those who purport to lead understand this information along with its ramifications, and incorporate it into their daily lives and work. This mind-change will require that one operate from Soul rather than from ego, and tap into inner wisdom to facilitate the process.

Social Interest and Individual Health - Karin Sidman-CroghanAn individual’s health can be directly affected by his or her adaption to stressful situations. Those who work or live in stressful environments tend to be more susceptible to illness when they do not have interests within the community. Adler saw social interest as an element of empathy, saying that it is “to see with the eyes of another, to hear with the ears of another, to feel with the heart of another (Adler, 1956, p.135).” If we are able to develop the life tasks effectively, then we are more likely to have a well-balanced and healthy life.

Relevance of 5th Century BC Understanding of the Sages in 21st Century AD - Chander KhannaFor eons sages of the Upanishads and Darshanas echoed unanimously: An Intentionality behind Pure Consciousness (the Ultimate Reality) animates all cycles of creation, a reflection of which (individual consciousness) animates all that is created. Only intellect can grasp and attain unity of the two. A synthesis of today’s contradictory views on consciousness is within grasp. This brief presentation will tie in the above to the instrumentality used by the sages through the six major schools of experiential philosophy (Nyaya, Viseshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Meemansa, and Vedanta). According to some of the best known thinkers of the World, these philosophical speculations contain some of the most original thoughts in the history of human thought.

MIRACLE-MINDEDNESS AND THE SOPHISTICATED INTELLECTMarianne Williamson Given the realization that the universe is both self-organizing and self-correcting, faith in

miracles turns out to be not the most blind but rather the most visionary way of perceiving the world. In this workshop, Marianne Williamson will articulate the principles of miracle-mindedness that prevail within the realm of consciousness. Learning these principles and applying them to our practical circumstances, we not only come to navigate our internal landscape but to miraculously affect the world.

applications but also raises questions about the evolution of human potential and whether technology in this domain, as we’ve seen in many others, may outpace our ability to use these abilities wisely.

The Gift of ChangeMarianne WilliamsonScience, psychotherapy, and spirituality are now converging, as the deepest understanding of all three appear at last to represent a single truth. Beyond the varieties of material

manifestation lies a unity, whether described by quantum physics or the great religious truths of the world. The profound evolutionary change of our era is the conversion of our thinking from a mental filter that posits a mechanistic universe, to one that reveals our spiritual oneness with each other and with all things. Emotionally, this shift is a miraculous journey from fear to love. It changes us, and it changes the world.
