But St. Sigma is not proscriptive. As with any workbook or case study, you have

The Case Study

St. Sigma is a comprehensive case study modeled on a real Lean Six Sigma project conducted in a hospital lab setting. Your students work through this simulated project from start to finish, just as they would a real Lean Six Sigma project.

The Problem. St. Sigma Hospital is facing a serious quality issue: the turn-around-time for lab tests is far too long, resulting in severe customer dissatisfaction.

Since glucose testing is a high-volume analysis that should be quick to perform, the process excellence team has decided that it will work to manage and maintain an appropriate cycle time for this process.

Students enter the simulation through the MoreSteam online learning portal (http://www.moresteam.com/university/). All they need is a computer, Internet connection, username and login.

After a short introduction, students enter the interactive lab, where they can “walk” the process, just like a real Gemba.

Arrows define the process flow, and clickable symbols give students access to process information , cycle time data and defect data .

Students can also click on lab technicians to “hear” what they have to say about the process!

In each DMAIC phase, your students can explore (or be led through by you) the

many different options required to understand and complete the project.

St. Sigma displays these options in a sequence that guides students in a logical

progression through the project.

Depending on the level of mastery you wish to impart (from a simple overview to

an advanced practice), you can skip or simply summarize options as needed.

The first option in each menu links to a

set of critical questions that your class can
