employers

• Cover Letter– Purpose is to “introduce” you and give an

overview of your qualifications

• Resumes may be hand delivered, mailed, or sent via email.

• Some sites allow for immediate uploading

Resume Tips• Understand why you need one.

• Keep the design simple.

• Keep it to one page.

• Use brief phrases; avoid complete sentences

– No more than 10-12 words per statement

• Make sure you have a professional email address (gmail). Stay away from cute or suggestive email addresses.

More Resume Tips

• Use bullet points where applicable

• Capitalize section headings or use bold fonts

• Single space within sections; double space between sections

• No “fluff;” be honest or it could harm you

• Stress your achievements

• If printing, use good, quality bond paper

• Do not include references on resume; list on separate sheet

• Take a look at yourself on-line. Do you like what you see?

• Clean up your act! Get rid of silly nicknames, offensive comments!

• Delete questionable pictures.

– Be careful about watching independent videos.

– LinkedIn is a professional networking site.

– It keeps your profile (similar to a resume).

– Do use a professional headshot.

– Do network with others and join their networks to enhance opportunities.

– LinkedIn has an “apply now” button for immediate resume upload; sends directly to prospective employer.

– Twitter is an emerging job search tool.

– Use 140 characters or less.

– Do be careful about who you “follow” and who you allow to “follow” you!

– Some recruiters are using Twitter because it is so brief.

– Link Twitter to your personal webpage so recruiters can see more details about you.
