Foreword

Wageningen University & Research is probably the only Dutch university and research institution with a One World Week to celebrate its international identity and the cultural diversity on its campus. And of course I am very proud of that. With over 100 nationalities Wageningen University & Research is becoming a true international organisation. Wageningen University & Research staff and students want to excel in science and to act as global citizens. We aim at understanding not only the scientific issues we are investigating, but also our social and cultural environment. This shapes our way of thinking. We are curious to experience different cultures, different approaches and values and we learn from each other. Actually, many worlds come together in Wageningen, in the upcoming week we emphasize this. Have a good time!

Prof. dr. Arthur Mol, rector magnificus

5

The One World Week is a week in which we celebrate the diversity and international focus in our education and research.

It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about different cultural backgrounds. Grab this chance to interact, connect, have fun and learn from each other to become a world-wise citizen. In the One World Week we have 50 activities in 1 week concerning international issues; exposure of different cultures, food, fashion, festival, debates on global themes, lectures, sports, movies etcetera.

The activities are during lunch time and in the evenings, mainly in Orion and Impulse. We also have nice activities during the weekend.

Most of the activities are for free and without registration. If registration is needed, it is shown on the website. This week is organised for all employees and students of Wageningen University & Research, Aeres University of Applied Sciences and other interested persons.

During the One World Week, the caterers also serve international dishes (regular price):• European food - Forum • Asian food - Restaurant of the Future• Latin American food - Orion• African food - LeeuwenborchOn Wednesday April 5 there are also Food Trucks present at the Forum Market Place with drinks and bites for regular prices. See page 20 and website for more information.

Lecture about Halal food 12.30 to 13.30

Many religions have dietary guidelines or laws. These differ from religion to religion and historically did not cause serious problems. Nowadays people from different religions and cultures move all over the world. At the same time more food is imported and exported and food production chains get more and more complicated. The Islam has very strict dietary laws to which Muslims should adhere. This is not a problem in most Islamic countries. But how do you know as a Muslim in non-Muslim countries what is allowed and what not? Due to the complexity of the food, this is hardly ever clear. And can you trust a certificate in a non-Muslim country? This lecture will deal with a few basic aspects of Islamic food law and the problems that Muslims face when buying food in a country like the Netherlands.

Organised by Ralf Hartemink, WUR | Orion Wing Atlas side Presentation about the history of the Netherlands 12.30 to 13.30

Time Between Cultures: 20.00 to 22.00

An Intercultural Approach to Time Did you ever look at time as a cultural concept? Something that may initially seem self-evident and static might become much more versatile and complex if you take an intercultural approach. Is time linear or cyclic? Does the future lie ahead of us, or is it the unknown ground behind our backs? Is time defined by the clock or by events? Is time scarce or unlimited? Can time be wasted? Can time be controlled or not? Around the globe, we vary in our views on these issues. What kind of cultural differences and similarities can be discerned, and what does this tell about ourselves and each other? Join Studium Generale and explore the intriguing concept of time from the perspective of cultural anthropology, and find out why the cultural rules of social time have been characterised as a “silent language”. It turns out that time is all but an unambiguous concept, and that the way we look at it reveals a lot about our sociocultural backgrounds and our outlooks on life. Examine your personal time orientation and find out how it relates to that of others. How can intercultural awareness of different perspectives on time facilitate international and intercultural communication and collaboration?
