Worshipful Master

WORSHIPFULL MASTER'S MESSAGE

Friends and Brethren:

On this memorable occasion I extend to you my warmest

greetings.

At this, our Centennial Celebration, I look with pride at what

has already been accomplished and with hopes of even greater

accomplishments in the coming years.

We are not the first Masonic Lodge in Maryland to have

reached this milestone, and we hope many more will have the

privilege of attaining this historical moment. We shall certainly try to build upon the precepts laid down by those wise and dedicated

Masons who have gone before us.

Ionic's brethren over these past one hundred years have set a

fine example to guide us. We must be an example for the future.

From this point in Ionic's history we must continue to add only that which is pleasing to God, our neighbor and ourselves. I feel

sure we all want to do this, not just "marking time," but with the

same will and desire to grow, and to accomplish as much as those

who have gone before us.

My brethren, it is with a deep and sincere sense of humility,

and with gratitude in my heart, that I thank you for the honor of serving as your Worshipful Master during this historic year.

Fraternally yours,

Ralph W. Tieman

ABOUT IONIC LODGE

From the early records of Freemasonry in Maryland we learn that there was a Lodge chartered at Reisterstown in 1798, named Temple, No. 26, but of which little is known. It was represented in Grand Lodge until about J

INSTITUTION OF IONIC LODGE

One hundred years ago a Dispensation from the office of the Master of the M. W. Grand Lodge of Maryland signed by Grand John Coates, empowered and authorized Brothers Samuel W. Starr, J. Norris, John Whiteford, William F. Weller, William P. Cole, Rev. Geo: Zimmerman, Andrew Banks, Rev. A. Y. Berger, John M. Wheeler, L.A.J. Lamotte and George McK. Teal, residing in Baltimore County to assemble a legal Lodge:

"Whereas said Petitioners have been recommended to me as :Iv Masons, in good standing by the Master, Wardens and other members Door to Virtue Lodge No. 46 under this jurisdiction" and "reposing confidence in the recommendation aforesaid and in the Masonic integrity, ability of the petitioners," to "Form and open a Lodge, after the manner of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and therein to make Freemasons according to the ancient custom and not otherwise."

Brother Samuel W. Starr was appointed to be the First Master Brother J. Cloud Norris was appointed to be the First Senior Warden, Brother John Whiteford was appointed to be the First Junior Warden This Dispensation was given under the hand of Grand Master Coates

and the seal of the Grand Lodge of Maryland on the 23rd day of February AL 5869, A.D. 1869 and attested by Jacob H. Medairy, Grand Secretary.

SUBSEQUENT HISTORY OF IONIC LODGE NO. 145 A.F. & A.M.

The brief treatment accorded the excerpts selected for the following chronicle should not be accepted as a full and complete study of the entire history of the Lodge. Rather, they have been chosen in hopes they may she some light on days gone by.

The first meeting was held in the meeting room of the Henry Clay Lodge, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in their hall on March 9th, 1869.

W. M. Starr appointed Brother William F. Weller-Secretary Brother George M. Zimmerman-Treasurer Brother Andrew Banks-Senior Deacon Brother A. J. Lamotte-Junior Deacon Brother William P. Cole-Tyler

The By-Laws of Doric Lodge No. 124 were adopted for the government of this Lodge while it was under Dispensation. Brothers Banks and Weller were appointed a Committee to procure "Jewels, Working Tools and Furniture" for the Lodge.

The first two petitions were received from Mr. William A. Slade, aged 37 years, of Woodensburg, a merchant and from Dr. Issac N. Dickson, aged 49 years, of Reisterstown, a physician. The sum of 30.00 was received from each petitioner.

Page 13: One Hundredth Anniversary Ionic Lodge No. 145

At the second meeting held in the Odd Fellows Hall on Tuesday, March 23rd 1869 regular business was conducted and Mr. W. A. Slade and Dr. 1. N. Dickson were severally introduced and initiated Entered Apprentices.

The phrase "IONIC LODGE" was mentioned for the first time in the minutes of this meeting.

A letter of thanks was rendered to Door to Virtue Lodge for recommending that this Ionic Lodge be formed.

At the April 13th and April 27th meetings regular .business only _was noted, but on Thursday, April 29th Brothers Slade and Dickson were raised to the Master Mason degree.

Again at the May 4th meeting regular business only noted but in the May 25th meeting, for the first time No. 145 appeared in the heading of the minutes.

The Charter of Ionic Lodge is dated May 10,1869. During the meeting of July 27th, 1869, a motion was made and passed to

"Dedicate this Lodge and its Officers" on August 2nd, 1869 and so on a "Special" meeting on that date the Lodge was Constituted and the Officers installed by Brother James W. Bowers, proxy for the Grand Master. 1_'he usual lectures were given and a supper was held after the meeting at the City Hotel in Reisterstown.

Officers installed were: Samuel W. Starr ....................................................................Worshipful Master J. Cloud Norris ...........................................................................Senior Warden John M. Whiteford .....................................................................Junior Warden Andrew Banks .............................................................................Senior Deacon Issac N. Dickson .........................................................................Junior Deacon William F. Weller ...............................................................................Secretary William A. Slade ................................................................................Treasurer William P. Cole ..........................................................................................Tyler

The Lodge was instructed in all three degrees by the Grand Lecturer. Regular business only was noted at both meetings in August.

At the regular meeting on Tuesday, September 14th, 1869 a motion was made to "take up the By-Laws and read Section by Section." This was done and all were adopted except. Article .3 Section 1 which was laid over for further consideration. The first audit committee was formed at this time to investigate the accounts of the Lodge and report their findings at the next meeting. This committee was composed of Brothers Banks, Dickson and Wilson.

During the 16th meeting of Ionic Lodge held on Tuesday, September 28, 1869 a petition from Brother C. W. Semmes was received for further advancement in Masonry. He had received the Entered Apprentice degree in Dove Lodge No.51 at Richmond, Virginia.

The Worshipful Master was instructed by the Grand Secretary to fill Section 3 Article 1 in the By-Laws.

The first visiting Past Grand Master, Brother D. C. Godwin of Temple Lodge No.9 of Milford, Delaware, was present at the meeting held on October 12,1869.

The By-Laws of Ionic Lodge in full form were adopted.

During the meeting of November 23rd, 1869, Brother Andrew Banks was appointed a committee of one to obtain parchment and have the charter written on it. It is very legible and beautifully framed and hangs today in our Lodge room.

Amendments to the By-Laws were offered by the Rev. Brother Zimmerman in the meeting of December 14th, 1869 to amend Section 1 of Article II, to strike out the word "AND" before Treasurer and insert "Chaplain and Tyler" after it, also in Section 2 strike out "and the Lodge its Tyler." At some meetings where regular business only was transacted, rehearsal for the Entered Apprentice or Fellowcraft Degrees was performed.

It was reported in the meeting of April 12, 1870 the Lodge had rented the Odd Fellows Hall for one year for $12.00 per annum, agreeing to pay its share of the light and fuel bill.

The heading of the Lodge minutes of November 29, 1871 may be an indication of the last communication held in the Odd Fellows Hall for the minutes of December 12, 1871 noted "Masonic Hall" and it is further noted in the records of paying rent to Reister Russell whose building in latter years became a dry goods and notions store.

Our Altar Bible, rebound some years ago, its pages showing usage, but still in very good condition, contains a penned note on the flyleaf--

Excellent lodge attendance was recorded on many occasions, an example being that of November 28, 1876 when at the raising of a Brother, there were 81 visiting Masons present, and at the conclusion of the meeting they were escorted by the members of Ionic Lodge to Mr. Hitshue's Hotel where supper was served.

Assistance was extended from time to time to areas where disaster had struck-in one instance because of an earthquake in 1886 at Charleston, S.C., to its citizens-to a Lodge in Florida to help rebuild after fire had destroyed their Temple-to suffering Italy in 1909-to the American-Syrian Relief Campaign in 1919, only naming a few over the years.

Ionic Lodge paid homage to the Late President, Brother William McKinley on September 17, 1901 after his untimely death.

A special communication was held on October 4, 1904 for the purpose of discussing the laying of the cornerstone for Franklin High School and at the regular meeting on October 11, 1904, upon motion, duly seconded it was moved that the Lodge lay the cornerstone and was further ordered that

Page 16: One Hundredth Anniversary Ionic Lodge No. 145

Sharon Lodge No. 182 and Mt. Moriah No. 116 be invited to participate. The trowel used by W. M. Harry E. Fox at this occasion was the same one used to lay the cornerstone of the Washington Monument in Baltimore Maryland.

Bro. Tovell, a building contractor underbid other contractors and was awarded

the contract to erect the Temple, and on October 2, 1926 in Special communication, having assembled for the purpose of laying the cornerstone of our new Temple, the W. M. Earcy S. Fox ordered the Marshall to form the Craft in procession and proceed to the building site. After prayer by the Rev. Bro. W. Harold Redcay of Trinity Lutheran Church the Craft joined in singing the hymn "How Firm a Foundation."

Rev. Theo. N. Barth, pastor of All Saints Church and a Past Master of Stevenson Lodge No. 135 delivered an eloquent message.

The cornerstone of the Bapist Church in Reisterstown was laid during W. M. George L. Horn's term of office on May 7, 191 1 as was the cornerstone of the Boring Sunday School Room on May 22, 1911. On November 27, 1915 the cornerstone of the Boring Volunteer Fire Department was laid, after which Bro. Lewis E. Grimes of Ionic Lodge addressed the assemblage.

At all these functions, the Brethren proceeded in a body from the Temple to the scene in Masonic attire.

October 13, 1916, the M. W. Grand Master of Masons in Maryland, Thomas J. Shyrock attended the raising of Bro. Jacob W. Wolf, the 100th member of Ionic Lodge. Bro. Wolf was raised by Dr. James H. Wilson and W. Taylor Stringer, alternately. One hundred brethren were in attendance.

The Lodge did not forget its members in the service of the U.S. Government during World War I, for a motion was carried to procure a suitable token of esteem for each and to be presented with a certificate for his dues.

A committee was appointed on April 14, 1922 to investigate the purchase of a building lot for a Temple and on April 28, 1922 this committee was empowered to purchase a building lot.

This committee was composed of Bros. S. S. Yingling, P. B. Welsh, Sr., W. N. Owens, E. S. Fox, E. C. Chaney, K. Pfeffer and J. W. Wolf.

The Lodge accepted the report of the above named Past Masters on September 8, 1922 and began planning for the erection of a new Temple. Options were taken at two locations and after discussion in the lodge, Bro. G. Walter Lovell at this time stepped forth and the following ensued:-Bros. S. S. Yingling, George L. Horn and W. N. Crouse were appointed to draft resolutions of acceptance of the gift of Bro. G. Walter Lovell of the building site. This was beautifully done, and in the Board room adjacent to the Lodge meeting room of our Temple, there hangs on the wall the above mentioned resolution signed by Bros. -

BUILDING COMMITTEE

On March 25, 1927 with the Grand Lodge officiating, the new Temple was dedicated, according to the Ancient Rites of Freemasonry. Addresses were delivered by Grand Master Warren G. Seipp and by the Rev. Bro. William Best of Ionic Lodge.

A banquet was served following the dedication in the dining hall by the members of Ionic Chapter No. 73, Order of the Eastern Star which had been chartered by the Grand Chapter of Maryland, on July 22, 1925.

The first Brother to be raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in the New Temple was Guy T. Harden on May 27, 1927.

Furniture for the Committee Room and window shades for the building were donated by P. M. Philip B. Welsh, Sr., and his wife.

The lodge experienced a cycle of good years and some lean ones. There insued a period when candidates were few, but attendance at communications was good and the determination and zealous interest of a small number of devoted brethren, particularly that of P.M. P. B. Welsh, Sr., carried the lodge over a time of discouragement and financial stringency.

February 27, 1931 was a date we believe may have been a first in a Masonic Lodge in Maryland, for on this date the most Worshipful Grand Master George R. Gorsuch and the Grand Lodge of Maryland conferred the first section of the 3rd degree and P. M. Philip B. Welsh, Sr., Past Senior Grand Steward of the G. L. of Md. at this time raised three of his four sons, A. Earl Welsh, Philip B. Welsh, Jr. and John F. Welsh to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. P. M. Robert Graham, Past Sr. Gr. Warden of the G. L. of Md. raised the youngest son, Robert G. Welsh.

Twenty-six Maryland lodgers were represented and nine lodges from other states with a total attendance of 260 members and visitors present.

New territorial lines were agreed upon after conferences with the Grand Lodge and neighboring Lodges in 1946.

W. M. Rudolph von Gunten and his line officers with the assistance of P. M. Rozell A. Cook, and National Representative, Egil Steen established a DeMolay Chapter at Ionic Temple. Bro. von Gunten was appointed the Chairman and P. M. Cook was the first "Dad." The Chapter's Charter dates from April 15, 1948.

Page 18: One Hundredth Anniversary Ionic Lodge No. 145

On May 5, 1956 Bethel No. 48, International Order of Jobs Daughters was chartered and had as its Guardian and Associate Guardian Mr. and Mrs. Michael Roberts. Bro. Roberts at this time, was a member of Cavite Lodge No.2 at Cavite City in the Philippines.

In later years Ionic Lodge has enjoyed the privilege of participating through donations to the Balto. County Public Library in Reisterstown, Boy Scouts of America, Franklin Chapter-Future Business Leaders of America, National Chapter for the Prevention of Blindness as well as to our own Masonic Homes Endowment Fund.

In 1968 our Temple was further enhanced by "Big Ed," Reisterstown's famous old town clock which was set in new cupola and given a new home atop the Temple. Big Ed has been faithfully keeping time for Reisterstown residents ever since 1888 and was originally installed on Goodwins Livery Stable and Town Hall along with a handsome bell which had two clappers -- one that stroked the time and one that was rung in case of fire. Today it strikes the hour only and together with its weather vane forms a striking view against the sky.

Over the years there have been many memorable and enjoyable activities participated in by the brethren of Ionic Lodge. Masonry and Ionic Lodge as well as other masonic bodies have attracted, and will continue to attract worthy men from all walks of life.

In this centennial year of our lodge we have a heritage to transmit, unimpaired to future generations. May we remember the value of time, the success of perseverance, the pleasure of working together, the worth of character, the power of kindness, and the influence of example.

May we truly pray for the blessing of heaven to rest upon us and all regular Freemasons, and that Brotherly love prevails, and every moral and social virtue cement us.
