One Hundred Forty-Eighth Year

In 1932, two institutions, Broaddus College and Alderson Academy & Junior College, were united to form Alderson-Broaddus College. Each of the institutions passed on a rich

Christian heritage. The older of the two, Broaddus University, was founded in Winchester, Virginia in 1871 by Edward Jefferson Willis, a Baptist minister who named the new college after Rev. William Francis Ferguson Broaddus, a prominent Baptist minister at the time of the Civil War. In 1876, Broaddus College was moved across the Alleghenies to Clarksburg, West Virginia. The college was moved again to the town of Philippi, West Virginia in 1901. Alderson Academy and Junior College, was founded in Alderson, West Virginia in 1901 by Emma Alderson, a committed Baptist laywoman. The sharing of a common identity as Baptist and liberal arts institutions led to the merger of the two colleges forming Alderson-Broaddus College.

Eighty-one years later, on June 27, 2013, AB gained university status and changed its name to Alderson Broaddus University to reflect its status among higher education. A campus-wide celebration was held on September 2, 2013, and an updated version of the mascot, Skirmish the Battler, was unveiled.

Today Alderson Broaddus University maintains five colleges: The College of Business; The College of Education and Music; The College of Health, Science, Technology and Mathematics; The College of Humanities and Social Sciences; and, The College of Medical Science. This structure has resulted in the expansion of academic majors, new academic initiatives, increased graduate culture, and reflects the prestige, character and status of AB among other institutions of higher education.

In 1945, AB developed the first four-year nursing program in West Virginia. In 1968, the University pioneered the nation’s first four-year physician assistant program, an innovation that has had enormous influence on the development of the physician assistant profession nationwide. From this program emerged the University’s first graduate degree offering, the physician assistant master’s program.

Alderson Broaddus University students learn and grow in a faith-based community affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA and the West Virginia Baptist Convention. As a health-related and professional education institution, Alderson Broaddus University educates students in the tenets of civic engagement, communication, critical thinking, diversity, and ethics which form the foundation of a liberal arts education.

This weekend, Alderson Broaddus University extends a warm welcome to its newest alumni and to the families and friends who will share with them and the University community in this special celebration.

The Alderson Broaddus University SealThe official seal bears the founding date, 1871, as well as a candle which signifies the torch of learning and an open book, the Bible, which signifies a source of knowledge and truth. The Latin words, Ex Obscuritate in Lucem are translated “out of darkness into light.”

The Presidential MedallionThe Presidential Medallion is symbolic of the office and its indication of authority can be traced to the Middle Ages. The Alderson Broaddus University Presidential Medallion and chain is made of solid antique bronze and is engraved with the official seal of the University. The Medallion is worn by the President at all formal academic functions where regalia is required.

The MaceIn the Middle Ages the mace was used by knights as a weapon. However, since the 14th century the mace has been used as a ceremonial symbol of authority.

The mace used in the ceremony today is a piece carved from a single block of cherry wood by AB alumnus Mark Warner ’68. The mace carving includes the Latin wording and symbols from the official seal. The case in which the mace will be displayed and stored was also made by Warner. It bears the inscription from a stained glass window that once was in the building that housed the former Alderson Baptist Academy and Junior College in Alderson, West Virginia. Now fully restored, the stained glass window is on display in Burbick Hall on the Alderson Broaddus University campus: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).
