Dear Mary Washington graduates,

Congratulations! This is a great day of celebration – for you, for your family and friends, and for the entire Mary Washington community. I commend you for the hard work and dedication that have led to this important occasion, your commencement.

Not only is Mary Washington a place of academic rigor and commitment to excellence in all that we do, it also is a place where people truly matter as individuals and where people genuinely care about one another. It is that sense of community that sets us apart and that will live within you for years to come.

The Mary Washington story is your story. What you have achieved here, the relationships you have forged with faculty and your fellow students, will forever be woven into the fabric of Mary Washington. And the values of honor, integrity, and citizenship that you have practiced here will serve as a foundation for the remainder of your life. Go forward with pride and with the knowledge that you are well prepared for all of life’s challenges and opportunities.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERSABBAS HAIDER AND ROBERT DAVIS

Abbas Haider, pictured above left, and Robert Davis, both graduates of the University of Mary Washington Class of 2012, parlayed their business administration degrees into real-world entrepreneurship. They are founding partners of Aspetto, a Fredericksburg-based business that has developed a global reputation as the go-to company for bulletproof clothing.

Haider, the company’s president and chief executive officer, and Davis, Aspetto’s chief operations officer, met in a UMW classroom when they both took a course on international business strategy. Their assignment: Invent a product that would be viable in foreign markets.

The duo of fashion aficionados and budding entrepreneurs had already bonded over their desire to create custom-made men’s suits. Haider had launched the enterprise three years earlier, calling it Aspetto, Italian for “appearance.” How to enhance the appeal of Aspetto to an overseas market? Add ballistics. The business took off, and this class project evolved into ready-made post-graduation jobs for Haider and Davis.

Last year, the Aspetto partners rose to the top of more than 15,000 nominations from across the country to make the prestigious Forbes magazine “30 Under 30” list of successful young business leaders.

The lifesaving apparel line has generated millions of dollars in revenue, serving the U.S. armed forces, government contractors, NFL players, reality TV stars, and other high-profile clients. It has been featured in such publications as Esquire, Newsweek, and The Independent UK.

Haider, who grew up in Chantilly, Virginia, started an import/export business during high school and was co-founder of UMW’s Entrepreneur Club. Davis, who played varsity soccer at UMW, is from Orange County, Virginia. Both have been named to UMW’s College of Business Advisory Board.

Student ________________________________________________________________________Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award

This award was established in 1960 to honor Colgate W. Darden Jr., president of the University of Virginia from 1947 to 1959. It consists of a medal and a cash sum. It is awarded to the senior having the highest cumulative grade-point average. To be eligible for the Darden Award, a student must have earned at least 94 hours on which quality points may be computed.

Faculty _________________________________________________________________________Mary W. Pinschmidt Award

This award was established in 1999 in honor of the late Professor of Biology Mary W. Pinschmidt, who throughout her academic career served as a role model and practitioner of exceptional liberal arts teaching and was a tireless contributor of service to her colleagues, her students, and the institution. The recipient of this award is selected by graduating seniors as the professor they feel they are most likely to remember as having the greatest impact on their lives. Faculty members who have served the University of Mary Washington for at least 15 years and who have attained the rank of professor or associate professor are eligible to be considered for emeritus status. This honor, by action of the Board of Visitors, is bestowed this year upon the following distinguished members of the faculty.

Michael L. BassProfessor Emeritus of Biology and Environmental Science _______________________________

Michael Bass received his Ph.D. in 1976 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He served Mary Washington for more than 45 years as a dedicated teacher and colleague. Dr. Bass helped build the environmental science program, and he worked with the City of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County on a variety of projects concerned with monitoring water quality, stream bank erosion, and the impact of construction projects on bodies of water such as Massaponax Creek and the Ni River. He often involved his students in field-work, enabling them to present their findings at regional and national conferences.

Timothy A. CrippenProfessor Emeritus of Sociology _____________________________________________________

Timothy Crippen began his career at Mary Washington shortly after earning his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982. In addition to his extensive teaching, Dr. Crippen also served as department chair and outcomes assessment coordinator during his 36 years of service. His faculty committee service included membership on the Faculty Affairs Committee and the College of Arts and Sciences Promotion and Tenure Committee. His publications focused on a range of topics including sociological theory, evolution and social behavior, and political sociology. Dr. Crippen also served on the editorial boards of leading scholarly journals in his field.

Joella C. KillianProfessor Emerita of Biology________________________________________________________

After earning her Ph.D. in entomology from North Carolina State University in 1984, Joella Killian began her career at UMW. Over her 34 years of service she developed a curriculum and delivered courses on a wide range of subjects including botany, ornithology, parasitology, and entomology. She has served as the faculty sponsor for Mortar Board and the Ecology Club. Dr. Killian also served on the College of Arts and Sciences Promotion and Tenure Committee and the First-Year Advising Program. She is a member of the Entomological Society of America and the scientific research society Sigma Xi. In 2013, Dr. Killian received UMW’s highest teaching honor, the Grellet C. Simpson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

ADMINISTRATOR EMERITUS

The president may recommend that emeritus status be awarded to retiring administrators and professional faculty who have provided extensive and meritorious service to the University of Mary Washington. This honor, by action of the Board of Visitors, is bestowed this year upon the following distinguished member of the administration.

Martin A. Wilder Jr.Chief of Staff Emeritus ____________________________________________________________

Since joining University of Mary Washington in 1979, Martin A. Wilder Jr. held vice presidential positions in admissions, enrollment and communications, enrollment management, and financial aid. He also served as associate dean of admissions. In 2007, he established the Rappahannock Scholars Program providing access and support for underrepresented students from the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Dr. Wilder served as chief of staff and clerk of the board under UMW presidents Richard V. Hurley and Troy D. Paino. In 2016, he was presented the Washington Medallion, one of the University’s most significant awards, which recognizes an individual who has served Mary Washington with exceptional dedication.

Dr. Wilder earned a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s degree in education, and a doctorate in education with a focus on educational leadership and policy studies in higher education, all from the University of Virginia.

ACADEMIC HONORS AND AWARDS

Academic achievement is recognized at commencement through a variety of honors and awards. Other awards were presented at the Eagle Awards Ceremony, April 19. In addition, most academic

departments sponsor chapters of honor societies that recognize student achievement in specific disciplines.

The University recognizes the academic achievements of graduating students through the distinctions of summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude, with highest distinction, and with distinction. Students who have earned at least 60 graded credits in residence may qualify for the first three of these awards with the following grade-point averages:

The University Honors program enhances the intellectual growth of highly motivated students by engaging them in rigorous honors-designated coursework, interdisciplinary seminars, extended research and creative projects, and community service. Students graduating with University Honors must maintain at least a 3.2 GPA; complete a set of honors course requirements; participate in co-curricular events, service learning, and leadership; and complete a capstone project or experience.

ACADEMIC CUSTOMS AND DRESS

The origins of many customs of the academic world can be traced to the Middle Ages, particularly the 11th and 12th centuries, when the first European universities – Bologna, Paris, and Oxford – were founded.

In their original organization, the universities were like medieval corporations or guilds. In fact, the word “universitas” originally referred to any kind of corporation. The students at the universities were equated to guild apprentices, so the completion of the apprenticeship was celebrated by a “commencement” marking the beginning of their careers.

In the 12th century, everyone wore gowns. The social and economic status of an individual was shown by the extra features, such as fur trimming, on the gowns. Cloaks with hoods were worn over gowns for protection in bad weather. Degrees began to be awarded in the 13th century, and different styles of gowns and different colors came to represent the various degrees and disciplines.

Over the centuries the styles of dress changed, and by the 17th century the wearing of gowns by men had virtually ceased. But the universities, particularly those in Britain, continued to be conservative and strict in the manner of academic customs and dress. At Oxford, for instance, a candidate for a master’s degree had to swear that he owned a gown and would always wear it at the proper times.

The first American universities were founded on English models. However, the wearing of academic dress was not universal and ceased during the Civil War. The custom was revived in the late 19th century, and in 1895 an academic custom code was adopted that, with modifications, is still used.

Most American universities have the standard black gown with the hood serving to distinguish the individual institution. Some American and European universities have adopted or preserved more distinctive gowns. There are three styles of gowns, distinguished mainly by the sleeves: the bachelor’s gown, with long pointed sleeves; the master’s, with a squared sleeve, cut so the forearm is free; and the doctoral gown, with bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet bands.

The hood is the most distinguishing feature of modern gowns, indicating the degree (the width of the edging band), the discipline (the color of the band), and the college or university (the colors of the lining). Today’s graduates have hoods edged in white (B.A.), gold (B.S., BLS), or apricot (BSN). Many faculty members will have blue edging indicating the doctoral degree. The faculty will be wearing hoods representing many distinguished institutions of higher education.

THE ACADEMIC MACE

The tradition of the academic mace began in the late 14th century, when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were

combined to form a symbol of the authority of the president or rector of a university. Noblemen carried the battle mace as both a weapon and staff of command, and the sovereign used the regal scepter as a sign of rulership, justice, and authority.

Together with the chain of office, the academic mace indicates that the president of the university is the temporary embodiment of the power,

authority, autonomy, and sovereignty vested in the institution represented.

At the University of Mary Washington, the grand marshal carries the academic mace on behalf of the president at academic events such as commencement exercises, inaugurations, and convocations.

The original University of Mary Washington mace, first used for the May 1970 Commencement, was designed by Asprey and Company of London, England. The sterling mace carried in today’s commencement ceremony was commissioned as a special project of the University Centennial Celebration in 2008. It was designed by Suzannah Wagner Merritt of Ashland, Virginia. The mace encompasses numerous symbols of the University, including lapis stones to display the school color; blossoms of dogwood to honor the Virginia state

tree; acorns and oak leaves to recall the historic tree at Brompton, home of the UMW president; and a herringbone motif representing Campus Walk. The six prongs are engraved with the six names of the school prior to its becoming a university in 2004; the prongs are adorned with a lapis disc engraved with the University seal. The handle is emblematic of the original Mary Washington mace.

THE UNIVERSITY SEAL

In addition to a book and lamp, signifying knowledge, the University seal denotes the year the institution was founded, 1908, and the University motto, Pro Deo Domo Patria, translated from Latin to “For God, home, and country.”

THE EAGLE PIPE BAND

As has become tradition, the UMW Eagle Pipe Band will perform at today’s commencement ceremony.

The band was formed in 1997 with a small number of Mary Washington students and members of the Fredericksburg community. Over the years a number of students have learned piping, drumming, or dancing skills through participation in this group. The band has been a top contender in pipe band competitions across the East Coast.

The Eagle Pipe Band was founded by Raymond B. Scott, University of Mary Washington professor of chemistry, and is under his direction. The tartan worn by the musicians was designed for the University to match the school colors and is registered in Scotland’s official registry of tartans.

PRESIDENTIAL COLLAR

Chains of office, also known as collars, originated in the Middle Ages and are worn today by presidents on ceremonial occasions as part of their

regalia. The University of Mary Washington chain is a unique design crafted from gold plated sterling silver with lapis lazuli gem accents. Symbols important to the history of the University are incorporated in elements of the chain. A large medallion, depicting the university seal, is flanked by white oak leaves symbolic of the historic oak tree at Brompton. The names of the presidents of the institution, along with their dates of service, are engraved on links that are connected with blossoms of dogwood, the Virginia state tree. The chain was unveiled during the University of Mary Washington Commencement in 2006,

and it is presented to each new president to wear during ceremonial occasions.
