How did you like the Mike Hunter Demo and Tool Trial Day last meeting? I personally thoughtthe meeting went well. Thanks to Mike for volunteering to come down and show us his tools. Al-so, thank you for getting enthused about his tools, the purchases you made provided the clubwith a $150.00 donation to the club. I liked the new size and ability to cut small objects. (I espe-cially liked his new angled straight carbide too) I asked mike to design a longer shaft so we cango deeper into a bowl or vase and he is sending me a proto-type to try. I will make it available tothe club to use and comment on.
A lot of people helped set this meeting and tools up and I would like to thank them for their help, but when the meeting was over, most of you drifted out and it us longer to clean up. We need vol-unteers to help clean up also. So next time we do this, please take a little extra time to help cleanup.
Did you get enough coffee at the meeting? We made 80 cups to start and then made 30 cupsmore. Eddy Holt drinks decafe and he volunteered a new smaller coffee pot to the club. ThanksEd for the coffee pot.
I was asked to add a column to the mailing list to call out what vocation we did or are still doingsuch as Plumber, Electrician, Printer CPA, and others. Many times in life we have a questionthat we need to ask someone with knowledge and don’t know who or how to ask. Having an occu-pation called out and knowing the people in our club provides a trust bond that we will get agood honest answer. What do you think? I will ask it during our next meeting. If you agree that itis a good idea, I will pass around a survey list with your name on it to add your past or presentoccupation to. Also, on the survey I will have three more columns that ask a question of howmany times do I turn in a DAY – WEEK – MONTH – YEAR – NONE OF THE ABOVE. Thiswill provide us an idea how active the club is. The last Column will ask, what do I want to see theclub do next? This will help the officers decide on future events.
Thanks Jim

Safety Glasses:
Face Shield:
As with all woodworking, safety glasses are the most important piece of safety equipment. There arenumerous styles of safety glasses. Try out the many styles that your woodworking supplier offers, and find a pair that you'll be comfortable wearing. Be certain that the pair you choose incorporatesimpact resistant lenses and side screens to protect against debris created by your power tools.
A face shield is a good idea when wood turning, as chips tend to fly in any direction. A clear, impactresistant full-face shield will keep these flying chips and debris out of your face, helping you to avoiddistraction when turning.

From the Editor;Phil here I want to have this page of our News Letter to focus on different areas ofwood turning. Like what do you like to do on the lathe? Pen work, Raw bowls, Seg-mented turning. So what are your interests, this page will be broke down to showtechniques that work and what doesn’t work. So e-mail me with what you like todo, and send in your thoughts. This our News Letter share what you like to do.Phil [email protected]
C. R. W. News PageWhat do you like to turn, When I think of all the different pieces that havecome to our Instant Gallery through the years. What have you found that isyour favorite kind of projects. I like to find different and new way of doingthings. I just turned a really nice stabilized Black Ash Burl pen blank. I used aCigar kit from Craft Supplies. Nice piece.
I am also going to try casting Resin and waste wood blanks. I have gotten 25lbs. of waste wood of Black Ash Burls. Cory at Up North Burls has somegreat burls at: http://upnorthburls.net/
I have tried using polymer clay to make pen blanks. This a fun medium, andthe finished product is a one of a kind.
Now we come to segmented turned pieces. Doing a segmented piece I feel isa great way to play with wood. Mixing wood types, planning the shape. I alsoreally like the raw wood bowls that we get from our local trees. I turn themtoo. Have you ever turned a nice burl bowl. The surprises that you get to un-cover. WOW
To sum this up I like wood and other mediums to do creative things with.
What’s do you like to do, take part and share. Phil M

I have many years of "Fine Woodworking Magazine". Wondering if anyone would like to trade forsome turning magazines? Please publish this question in the newsletter. Thanks, John Philips
What’s On Your Mind?Ask some Questions.Do you have a tip or a trick Share it.What’s your favorite wood?
Make a bowl depth gauge In response to some questions raisedabout using a metal tap in wood, here is a simple tip that is handyto most turners. A bowl gauge is used to identify how far youhave gone in a bowl or vase. Cut a piece of wood as long as youplan on turning a bowl diameter plus a couple of inches. I.e. agauge for ten inch maximum bowls will use a twelve inch longpiece of wood. Drill a 7/32" hole at center, rotate the wood 90degrees and drill a 1/4" hole. Use a 1/4" x 20 tap to thread the7/32" hole. Insert a piece of 1/4" dowel through the unthreadedhole and a 1/4" bolt or thumbscrew through the threaded hole. The dowel is set to desired depth and the wood piece serves as astop at the bowl's edges. A hint I learned from Jacques Vessery isto replace the dowel with an antenna from a portable radio whendoing long vases. It is light and easily retractable for storage. Ifyou can not find an antenna, I find a magnetic pickup from thedollar store to work well.
