One Day National Seminar on
English Literature in the Digital Era
Digital literature is a genre which
operates solely on digital devices such as
computers, tablets and phones. In this
digital era, modes of reading and writing
have gone through transition from the
normal traditional printed mode to digital
mode through digital setting. Since the
development of the computer system in
1960s and 1970s, writing, speaking,
documentation and presentation have gone
through a sea change. In 1877, recordings
of spoken words began with the invention
of phonograph. In 1930s, the first “talking
book” was made to hold short stories and
book chapters. The 1970s were the time,
when the term “Audio Book” became a part
of the cassette tapes. Will Crowther in her
p r o g r a m m e d t e x t g a m e n a m e d
Colossal Cave Adventures focused on the
interconnectedness between embodied
writers and intelligent machines. Thus
Interactive Fictions were created. N.
Katherine Hales in her work “Electronic
Literature” made the first systematic study
on electronic literature. Her theoretical
framework brings about the possibility of
understanding the areas where the print
literature needs to improve, develop and
facilitate newer kind of reading,
making use of electronic media. She also
makes important note of the balancing
factor on human intelligence and
technology.
Digital literature can help open up
space for interaction, discussion, with the
reading public about authorship and
readership. This can bring about
connections between embodied writers and
the intelligent machines that perform
electronic text. Discussion and debate on
digital literature would also help us
understand electronic literature and put
forward new readings and strategies.
Research methods and modes, discussions
and paper presentations would be on the
multiple means of electronic writing. These
would enable us to understand how literary
studies, media studies and software studies
are connected. It would also help us blend
thinking and making literary approach to
the studies on spacio-temporal realities in
hypertexts.
The aim of the seminar is :
a) To provide an opportunity for the
researchers, academicians and students to
share and discuss their current research and
teaching practices in the digital era and
electronic literature.
b) To provide a platform to participate and
demonstrate the various digital narrative
forms.

Electronic literature.
