One Another/Each Other Bible Study for Small Groups

These studies are designed to be discussed in small group settings. This curriculum is designed to work on group discovery and more importantly what the Lord reveals to each individual and to each group. This curriculum is not designed for settings that rely on formal teaching sessions etc. The basic format is to begin with the “Community Caring and Communicating” questions:

1. What good things have happened in your life since we last met? 2. Do you have any struggles or concerns in your life right now? 3. How did you do with what you said you were going to change

since last we met?

4. Did you pray every day as you had planned last time we met?

These are the first four discussions at each session (the questions are slightly different in the first session because there is no previous meeting to have planned for these questions adequately). Question 1 is asked and then each member of the group shares his or her answer. After you have completed a round of the group discussing question 1 then you read question 2 and let each person share their answers and then question 3, then question 4. After these discussions someone in the group reads the passage for that study aloud (you may want to have more than one person read it aloud especially if participants have different versions of the Bible). Next have the participants read the passage silently to themselves. When the reading is completed, the group moves on to discussion of the four study questions:

1. What do you learn about God? 2. What do you learn about God’s Will for People? 3. What do you learn about Interacting With Each Other (“one

another”)? 4. What do you learn about Yourself?

This is an open discussion of the passage that is facilitated by whoever the leader is and IS NOT TAUGHT LIKE A CLASS. The facilitator’s goal is to get everybody else to share not to teach everyone else. It is important that if somebody share something that is not related to the passage your are studying that the questions: “Where does that appear in this passage?” be asked by the other members, but not as punishment. The question has to be asked with the mindset of truly seeing where the person is getting that from. When that is done you move on to the “Commitment to Change” questions:

1. What will you do differently because of what we discussed in this study?

2. Who is one person will you do something differently to before the next time we meet and what will you do?

3. What will you pray about every day until our next meeting because of this study?

The handouts for each lesson are designed to demonstrate what the participants can use to prepare for the sessions. The best way to use these is to give each member the next lesson’s handout to fill out the four columns with the “What do you learn…” questions or simply give the participants the scripture for the next meeting and have participants fill out the answers on regular lined paper. YES THERE IS HOMEWORK TO PREPARE. Attendees must agree to all of these things before the study begins. Once the group is 2 – 3 lessons into the study, new people should probably not be added to the studies as they would be at a different place in their growth and would have missed too much. It is better to start a group facilitated by someone who has previously done the study or who is currently doing the study in this group.

Verse: Colossians 3:14-16 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 14 Above all, be loving. This ties everything together perfectly. 15 Also, let Christ’s peace control you. God has called you into this peace by bringing you into one body. Be thankful. 16 Let Christ’s word with all its wisdom and richness live in you. Use psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to teach and instruct yourselves about God’s kindness. Sing to God in your hearts.








Verse: John 13:34-35 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 34 “I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you. 35 Everyone will know that you are my disciples because of your love for each other.”








Verse: Ephesians 4:1-7 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) I, a prisoner in the Lord, encourage you to live the kind of life which proves that God has called you. 2 Be humble and gentle in every way. Be patient with each other and lovingly accept each other. 3 Through the peace that ties you together, do your best to maintain the unity that the Spirit gives. 4 There is one body and one Spirit. In the same way you were called to share one hope. 5 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over everything, through everything, and in everything. 7 God’s favor[a] has been given to each of us. It was measured out to us by Christ who gave it.








Verse: Romans 12:10-16 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 10 Be devoted to each other like a loving family. Excel in showing respect for each other. 11

Don’t be lazy in showing your devotion. Use your energy to serve the Lord. 12 Be happy in your confidence, be patient in trouble, and pray continually. 13 Share what you have with God’s people who are in need. Be hospitable. 14 Bless those who persecute you. Bless them, and don’t curse them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy. Be sad with those who are sad. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be arrogant, but be friendly to humble people. Don’t think that you are smarter than you really are.








Verse: 1 Peter 3:8-12 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 8 Finally, everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble. 9 Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you, or ridicule those who ridicule you. Instead, bless them, because you were called to inherit a blessing. 10

“People who want to live a full life and enjoy good days must keep their tongues from saying evil things, and their lips from speaking deceitful things. 11 They must turn away from evil and do good. They must seek peace and pursue it. 12 The Lord’s eyes are on those who do what he approves. His ears hear their prayer. The Lord confronts those who do evil.”








Verse: Galatians 5:13-15 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 13 You were indeed called to be free, brothers and sisters. Don’t turn this freedom into an excuse for your corrupt nature to express itself. Rather, serve each other through love. 14 All of Moses’ Teachings are summarized in a single statement, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” 15 But if you criticize and attack each other, be careful that you don’t destroy each other.








Verse: James 4:11 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 11 Brothers and sisters, stop slandering each other. Those who slander and judge other believers slander and judge God’s teachings. If you judge God’s teachings, you are no longer following them. Instead, you are judging them.








Verse: Romans 14:12-13 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 12 All of us will have to give an account of ourselves to God. 13 So let’s stop criticizing each other. Instead, you should decide never to do anything that would make other Christians have doubts or lose their faith.








Verse: Romans 15:5-7 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 5 May God, who gives you this endurance and encouragement, allow you to live in harmony with each other by following the example of Christ Jesus. 6 Then, having the same goal, you will praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore, accept each other in the same way that Christ accepted you. He did this to bring glory to God.








Verse: 1 Corinthians 1:10 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 10 Brothers and sisters, I encourage all of you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to agree with each other and not to split into opposing groups. I want you to be united in your understanding and opinions.

Verse: Ephesians 4:29-32 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 29 Don’t say anything that would hurt another person. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you. 30 Don’t give God’s Holy Spirit any reason to be upset with you. He has put his seal on you for the day you will be set free from the world of sin. 31 Get rid of your bitterness, hot tempers, anger, loud quarreling, cursing, and hatred. 32 Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ.








Verse: Romans 13:6-10 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 6 That is also why you pay your taxes. People in the government are God’s servants while they do the work he has given them. 7 Pay everyone whatever you owe them. If you owe taxes, pay them. If you owe tolls, pay them. If you owe someone respect, respect that person. If you owe someone honor, honor that person. 8 Pay your debts as they come due. However, one debt you can never finish paying is the debt of love that you owe each other. The one who loves another person has fulfilled Moses’ Teachings. 9 The commandments, “Never commit adultery; never murder; never steal; never have wrong desires,” and every other commandment are summed up in this statement: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” 10 Love never does anything that is harmful to a neighbor. Therefore, love fulfills Moses’ Teachings.








Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:11-22 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 11 Therefore, encourage each other and strengthen one another as you are doing. 12 Brothers and sisters, we ask you to show your appreciation for those leaders who work among you and instruct you. 13 We ask you to love them and think very highly of them because of the work they are doing. Live in peace with each other. 14 We encourage you, brothers and sisters, to instruct those who are not living right, cheer up those who are discouraged, help the weak, and be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that no one ever pays back one wrong with another wrong. Instead, always try to do what is good for each other and everyone else. 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Whatever happens, give thanks, because it is God’s will in Christ Jesus that you do this. 19 Don’t put out the Spirit’s fire. 20 Don’t despise what God has revealed. 21 Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. 22 Keep away from every kind of evil.








Verse: Hebrews 3:12-14 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 12 Be careful, brothers and sisters, that none of you ever develop a wicked, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 Encourage each other every day while you have the opportunity. If you do this, none of you will be deceived by sin and become stubborn. 14

After all, we will remain Christ’s partners only if we continue to hold on to our original confidence until the end.








Verse: Leviticus 19:11-16 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 11 “Never steal, lie, or deceive your neighbor. 12 “Never swear by my name in order to deceive anyone. This dishonors the name of your God. I am the Lord. 13 “Never oppress or rob your neighbor. Never keep the pay you owe a hired worker overnight. 14 Never curse deaf people or put anything in the way of blind people to make them stumble. Instead, fear your God. I am the Lord. 15 “Don’t be corrupt when administering justice. Never give special favors to poor people, and never show preference to important people. Judge your neighbor fairly. 16 Never gossip. Never endanger your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord.








Verse: Hebrews 10:23-25 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 23 We must continue to hold firmly to our declaration of faith. The one who made the promise is faithful. 24 We must also consider how to encourage each other to show love and to do good things. 25 We should not stop gathering together with other believers, as some of you are doing. Instead, we must continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day of the Lord coming.








Verse: 1 Peter 4:8-11 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 8 Above all, love each other warmly, because love covers many sins. 9 Welcome each other as guests without complaining. 10 Each of you as a good manager must use the gift that God has given you to serve others. 11 Whoever speaks must speak God’s words. Whoever serves must serve with the strength God supplies so that in every way God receives glory through Jesus Christ. Glory and power belong to Jesus Christ forever and ever! Amen.








Verse: Ephesians 5:18-21 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 18 Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit[a] 19 by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good. Sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts. 20 Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Place yourselves under each other’s authority out of respect for Christ.








Verse: John 13:3-15 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 3 The Father had put everything in Jesus’ control. Jesus knew that. He also knew that he had come from God and was going back to God. 4 So he got up from the table, removed his outer clothes, took a towel, and tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that he had tied around his waist. 6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered Peter, “You don’t know now what I’m doing. You will understand later.” 8 Peter told Jesus, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus replied to Peter, “If I don’t wash you, you don’t belong to me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, don’t wash only my feet. Wash my hands and my head too!” 10 Jesus told Peter, “People who have washed are completely clean. They need to have only their feet washed. All of you, except for one, are clean.” 11 (Jesus knew who was going to betray him. That’s why he said, “All of you, except for one, are clean.”) 12 After Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer clothes, he took his place at the table again. Then he asked his disciples, “Do you understand what I’ve done for you? 13 You call me teacher and Lord, and you’re right because that’s what I am. 14

So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you must wash each other’s feet. 15

I’ve given you an example that you should follow.








Verse: 1 Peter 5:5-6 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 5 Young people, in a similar way, place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble. 6 Be humbled by God’s power so that when the right time comes he will honor you.








Verse: Romans 16:16-18 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 16 Greet each other with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. 17 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to watch out for those people who create divisions and who make others fall away from the Christian faith by teaching doctrine that is not the same as you have learned. Stay away from them. 18 People like these are not serving Christ our Lord. They are serving their own desires. By their smooth talk and flattering words they deceive unsuspecting people.








Verse: 1 John 1:6-7 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) 6 If we say, “We have a relationship with God” and yet live in the dark, we’re lying. We aren’t being truthful. 7 But if we live in the light in the same way that God is in the light, we have a relationship with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from every sin.
