Onam 2012 Rituals and Celebrations in Kerala(South India) with Pradeep Voyage

Onam is the most popular Hindu festivals of Kerala celebrated annually in

the Malayalam month of Chingam (August – September). 

Onam Festival is celebrated for 10 days and to promote Onam internationally, the Kerala peoples celebrates the festival time as ‘Tourist Week’ in Kerala. The 2012 Kerala Onam festival begins with Athachamayam Festival in Tripunithura on 21st August 2012 and Thiruvonam festival is on 29th August 2012.

Rituals on Onam Utradam

Onam Uthradam is celebrated one day prior to Thiruonam (Thiru Onam). It is the custom of the tenants and depends of Tarawads (or Taravad, which literally means ancient family houses) to give gifts such as vegetables, coconut oil and plantains to Karanavar, the eldest member of the family. The gifts from villagers to Karanavar on Onam are called Onakazhcha. The Karanavar in turn offers a treat to the villagers. Handicrafts are also offered to the Karanavar of Nayar Tarawads by the village artisans

Procession of Decorated Elephants during Onam

Procession of decorated elephants during Onam festival is mainly held at Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. The elephants are beautifully decorated and taken in procession around the streets. It offers a glorious sight to the viewers, with songs and dances.

Onam Celebrations in Cheruthuruthy, Kerala

Cheruthuruthy, a small village in the north of Thrissur district, is famous for the Kerala Kalamandalam, the Kathakali Training Centre. Kathakali, the classical Dance-Drama of Kerala, is performed here by the finest artists of the state. Enactments from the scenes of epics and folk tales fascinate the audience.
