What is Foundation Learning? Foundation Learning (FL) is a national programme of learning for learners aged 14-19 working predominantly at entry level or level 1. It offers a personalised and flexible programme of learning, based around qualifications from the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and is focused on progression. The FL programme is made up of the three areas listed below - the balance between each element depends on individual need:

vocational or subject learning personal and social development (PSD) and functional skills

FL will provide clear and coherent progression routes to higher level learning and other goals. It offers learners flexibility, choice and the opportunity to concentrate on a specific vocational area - and through qualifications accredited on the QCF an easily recognised means of accrediting achievement at entry level and level 1. FL learners follow carefully personalised programmes, based on an initial assessment to identify their prior achievements, educational needs and future goals. These personalised learning programmes are designed to support the progression of every learner. This may be towards a learning programme at level 2, a return to GCSE study, skilled work or Apprenticeship programme, or it may be towards independent living or supported employment. Both the content and duration of learning programmes are flexible, to suit individual needs. The wrap around of advice, guidance, review and support are an integral part of FL and Programmes can be revised as the learner progresses. What is ON2? ON2 in Brighton & Hove offers flexible Foundation Learning programmes to help young people develop skills, confidence and independence in preparation for work, training or further education. The programmes are designed around what the learner wants to do and where they want to progress to. They take into account learning needs and include specialist activities and tasters in vocational subjects leading to qualifications. Support is on hand when needed and advice and guidance will be offered along the way.

City College run flexible programmes that enable young people who, for a variety of reasons, have not achieved in previous education. We offer vocational tasters including Hair & Beauty and Construction and give learners the opportunity to work in smaller groups to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Our Foundation Learning programmes enable learners to build their confidence, develop teamwork skills and learn new practical skills. Our programmes can be individualised to meet the needs of each learner. Learners have progressed onto Mid-Year courses and full time Level 1 and 2 courses from our Foundation Learning pathways programmes. Case study Brady started with the college in September of 2010. He was a very unconfident learner who had few qualifications and his previous experiences of education had not always been positive. When Brady started his Pathways Construction course he had low self-esteem and a low expectation of his own abilities. Alongside his chosen vocational subject Brady completed units in literacy and numeracy. These were areas that had previously caused a lot of problems for Brady but with gentle encouragement and praise from his tutors, it soon became clear that he was a lot more capable than he gave himself credit for. As his confidence grew so too did his motivation. Throughout the course Brady was encouraged to think about and plan for his future. He was accepted onto a Mid-Year Carpentry course. He has secured a place at City College to continue with his Carpentry in September and, as a result of his amazing achievements, has been asked to be a part of the college’s Give 2 Gambia project. This December he will be travelling to the Gambia to carry out essential maintenance work at a primary school. “The Foundation Learning programme has really helped Brady improve his confidence and his self-motivation. This has continued with the mid-year programme that he is currently on, his timekeeping skills are excellent and he is always the first to complete projects. A fantastic achievement for Brady.”

Dv8 run a number of post 16 Foundation Learning courses in Music Technology, Multimedia, and Fashion. All courses are nationally accredited and support young people to gain valuable skills in maths, English and Personal Social Development. Such skills are essential for moving forward into employment or further education and Dv8 have great links to local colleges and employers to support progression. Dv8 Foundation Learning courses are 15 hours per week and may last up to 19 weeks in Brighton, Ringmer and Bexhill (East Sussex). All courses are free to young people, if eligible, and will be a key stepping stone in making future choices for work and college. All young people are supported by Dv8’s creative tutors to build a personal portfolio of creative projects and have regular one to one reviews to set individual targets and reflect on personal achievements. Dv8 aim to challenge young people, boost confidence and help them gain independent life skills for the future. At the end of each course every learner will take away a portfolio of their own music and fashion designs and will be encouraged to share their work with others at showcase events. Case study Rob joined Dv8’s Music Technology course in September 2010 with few GCSE’s and had limited experience of using music production software. Rob was keen to build new skills, develop his production work and gain a place at college following Dv8. Over the nineteen-week course Rob was able to use his love for music and dubstep to produce his own original music using Logic Pro software. Although Rob had limited experience of making his own music before Dv8 he was able to get one to one support from his tutor, develop personal goals and achieve his level 1 Music Technology and level 1 Music Composition qualifications. Rob particularly enjoyed learning about equalisers and mixing skills which helped give his tracks a really professional, polished sound. Alongside Music Technology Rob sat exams for Functional Skills English and maths. These qualifications have been really useful in supporting his application to Access to Music and Rob has now been offered a place on the Access to Music level 2 Music Production course starting in September.

MPCT originated in Wales in 1999 and has been delivering training to 14-19 year olds in the South of England since 2007. MPCT’s mission is to engage, motivate and educate to achieve excellence for all. MPCT creates a learning environment that is positive, supportive and caring. The students will be offered the best possible opportunities through a structured programme and dedicated mentoring. Each programme that MPCT runs is unique and tailored to the individual learner to ensure they have every opportunity to progress at their level of ability into positive outcomes. Case study Jodie started with MPCT on the Military Preparation College course in December 2010 to gain more confidence and self-belief. She joined the college with the ambition of a career in the Armed Forces but also to learn new skills that would benefit her in other vocational routes. Jodie is currently waiting on selection to be a student nurse in the British Army. Whilst Jodie has been attending the course she has grown in confidence and learned and developed new skills such as, interview skills and project planning by organising a local community project. Jodie had limited experience in such tasks and really enjoyed learning from others and working with other members of her team. Jodie has also really enjoyed the physical training element of the course where she has improved in a number of areas of her fitness. This included reducing her run time by over four minutes on her mile and a half run, Jodie is very proud of this. The Military Away Days have also been an important experience for Jodie and gave her an insight on what her chosen career choice is like. This included learning about drill, survival skills and camouflage and concealment accompanied by visits to the Imperial War museum and paintballing. On the course Jodie has also received training in functional skills. She has enjoyed attending these sessions and understands the benefits of on-going training of maths and English as she will use such skills every day in her chosen careers choice. The training received on functional skills helped her achieve her job choice when sitting the Armed Forces entry test. Jodie has just recently sat her functional skills exams at level 1 and is confident she has done well. Also Jodie has been successful in achieving a qualification in personal development and contributing to the community where she learned about personal leadership and the importance of team work. “My experience at the MPC has been amazing. The people I have met and the lifelong lessons I have been taught have changed me and made me a better person. I now believe I can achieve anything.”

At Nacro we offer a supportive learning environment; staff are trained to work with a variety of different needs and our small class size allow learners the opportunity to develop to their full potential where their individual needs are met. Harry came to Nacro with no qualifications yet after six months on our Employability Skills course he left with 5 Level 1 qualifications: Employability Skills, Money Management, Health and Safety and English and Maths. With Nacro’s support Harry is now working permanently for B&Q and has enrolled on a Princes Trust course for the summer. “It has been a pleasure working with Harry, watching him grow on both a personal and academic level. Varndean College in partnership with the Crew Club run a number of Foundation Learning Programmes that enable young people who, for various reasons did not achieve their potential at school and therefore find themselves with a lack of choices in moving their lives forward, to develop their self-confidence, skills and abilities. Over the six years that we have been delivering these programmes we have seen many young people move forward with confidence into further education, jobs and apprenticeships that they were unable to access before. In fact, a number of our students are now studying at level 3 (A Level) and a number are at university with many more studying at Level 2 and achieving positive outcomes. Case study Lauren was a regular truant from school where she was bullied and as a consequence of these circumstances she under-achieved in her GCSEs – leaving with no qualifications. Lauren completed the Start2Care programme along with the other elements of PSD and Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT. Lauren’s level of work was impressive; her understanding, commitment and confidence growing steadily throughout the programme. As a result Lauren achieved a diploma, is awaiting her functional skills results and has a place on a level two course next year to study Health and Social Care and Child Development at Varndean College. Lauren wishes to work with young people in the future and intends to progress to a level three course with this in mind. As well as her obvious academic achievement, Lauren has greatly improved her attendance and developed her ability to deal with a variety of people and situations in different academic and social settings, thus greatly improving her confidence and therefore her belief in her own ability to succeed in the future she has chosen.
