Coal. oil, and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of its power. However, not only are supplies of these fuels limited, but they are a major source of pollution. Therefore, it’s important to improve, explore and develop such alternative energy sources as nuclear, water, solar and wind power. Each of these alternatives, however, has advantages and disavantages.

Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without polluting the atmosphere; however, they are costly to build and maintain, and they create the difficult problem of what to do with nuclear waste. Hydroelectric power is inexpensive and environmentally safe, but impractical for communitities located far from moving water. Wind power is a pollution-free source of renewabe energy but it can’t be used in many parts of the world where there is insufficient wind. Solar power is renewable, it doesn’t cause pollution and it doesn’t add the earth’s heat load. How ever, it is difficult to collect and store. Solar power also requires expensive equipment.37. A NOBLE GIFT One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statute of Liberty, was presented to the United States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The actual figure was made of copper supported by a metal framework which had been especially constructed by Eiffel. By 1884, a statute which was 151 feet tall, had been erected in Paris. The following year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. Washington: Hurricane Andrew in Florida; the floods in the American Midwest; terrible earthquakes all over the world; huge fires; and so on. But I’ll never forget my first personal experience with the strangeness of nature – “The London Killer Fog” of 1952. It began on Thursday, December 4 th when a high –pressure system (warm air) cover southern England. With the freezing-cold air below, heavy fog formed. Pollution from factories, cars, and coal stoves mixed with the fog. The humidity was terribly high, there was no breeze at all. Traffic (cars, trains, and boats) stopped. People couldn’t see, and some walked onto the railroad tracks or into the river. It was hard to breathe, and many people got sick. Finally on Tuesday, December 9 th, the wind came and the fog went away. TRAFFIC IN OUR CITIESThe volume of traffic in many cities in the world today continues to expand. This causes many problems,

including serious air pollution, lengthy delays, and the greater risk of accidents. Clearly, something must be done, but it is often difficult to persuade people to change their habits and leave their cars at home.

One possible approach is to make it more expensive for people to use their cars by increasing charges for parking and bringing in tougher fines for anyone who breaks the law. In addition, drivers could be required to pay for using particular routes at different times of the day. This system, known as ‘road pricing’, is already being introduced in a number of cities, using a special electronic card fixed to the windscreen of the car.

Another way of dealing with the problem is to provide cheap parking on the outskirts of the city, and strictly control the number of vehicles allowed into the centre. Drivers and their passengers then use a special bus service for the final stage of their journey.

Of course, the most important thing is to provide good public transport. However, to get people to give up the comfort of their cars, public transport must be felt to be reliable, convenient and comfortable, with fares kept at an acceptable level.37.Which of the following is not mentioned as a problem of the increasing traffic in cities?

A. serious air pollution. B. traffic jams.C. difficulty changing people’s habits. D. greater risk of accidents.

I. Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct answers.Nowadys people are more aware that wildlife all over the world is in danger. Many species of animals are

threatened, and could easily become extinct if we do not make an effort to protect them. There are many reasons for this.In some cases, animals are hunted fir their fur or for other valuable parts of their bodies. Some birds, such as parrots, are caught alive, and sold as pets. For many animals and birds, the problem is that their habitat- the place where they live – is disappearing.
