2015 Fall Country Coach International (CCI) Rally Waterfalls, Wineries and Gorges - Watkins Glen, NY

September 21-25, Watkins Glen, NY, KOA Campground

Registration for the Rally is open! Registration is limited to 60, so get those registrations in NOW

Our Area Hosts for this rally are the Country Coach Nor’Easters.Located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, Wat-

kins Glen is a centrally located area for touring. The Finger Lakes area is famous for its natural beauty (gorges and water-falls), award-winning wineries, and great museums.

The town of Watkins Glen is located on the southern tip of Sen-eca Lake, the largest and the deepest of the Finger Lakes. Grand Prix auto racing was once held on the downtown streets and hills.

The Watkins Glen State Park gorge trail is a short to moderate hike through one of the pret-tiest gorges in the east, and you will not want to miss it. You will be in awe of the rock forma-

tions water has created and walk under one of the many waterfalls on the trail. An optional side trip to Ithaca will include more gorges and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall east of the Rockies.

Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, is another possible day trip. Drive along the gorge, stop-ping at numerous overlooks along the way.

The Finger Lakes climate is very conducive for the growing of grapes. Estate wineries dot the landscape.

We have arranged for small tour buses to take you to five of our local wineries, all located on the shores of Seneca Lake. Included will be lunch overlooking the lake and vineyards. If wine is your thing, you may want to visit additional wineries on you own -- we can suggest our favorites.

The Corning Museum of Glass is the world’s most compre-hensive collection of all types of glass. You can watch glass makers and even make your own glass. An exciting new wing has been added. This is a great museum. Also in Corning is the Rockwell Museum of Art. The Glenn Curtiss Transpor-tation Museum in Hammondsport (a quaint little town to explore at the south end of Keuka Lake) is another museum not to be missed. Curtiss was the first to put a motor on a bicycle and live to tell about it. He almost beat the Wright brothers as the first to fly. Also, check out the first “fifth-wheel” here. The National Soaring Museum in Big Flats offers glider rides.

July and August have turned out to be unusually busy for CCI. Prepar-ing for and attending the Shipshewana rally was a whirlwind of travel and activity. Jeanne and I had been to Shipshe (as the locals say) before so we knew some of what to expect. But the Rally activities and outings put the area on display in a special way for us RVers. Check out Eric Arnold’s column for more details about our rally and also see the pictures on page 9. I have to admit to hearing a lot of rally praises and thank you’s. Well done to the Toalsons and the Harbrechts. From Shipshe, after a stopover in the Chicago

area to see Mom and siblings, it was onward to the FMCA rally in Madison, WI. FMCA contin-ues to be challenged with membership mainte-nance issues but the rally is still a great gather-ing, with many friends from other clubs, and service providers we know. See Jack Cassing-ham’s column on page 12 for more information from FMCA. Eric also mentions the CCI Club Meet and Greet Session CCI held for all Coun-try Coach Owners at the FMCA event. While at FMCA, Jeanne and I had a chance to catch up with Ken and Lida Carpenter as well as Brett and Dianne Wolfe from the Diesel RV Club. Our Watkin’s Glen Rally is just around the

corner . . . just a few weeks away. So far we have close to 40 coaches registered. There are a few spots left and the deadline for registration is a week away, so if you’re thinking of going, regis-ter now!Just last week Country Coach Corporation

rolled out it’s new 2016 Allure, the first unit since the bankruptcy. BRAVO! We’ve assem-bled a visual tour on pages 13-14. Check it out!Look to the right, in the next column - you’ll

see a reference to the form you can use to buy the new/current CCI Name Badges. It’s a sim-ple way to get your new badge. Just go to the Club website, log-in, go the ‘Member Services’ Tab, click on Forms and download the form to

order badges. You should be able to fill out the form on your computer, print it out and mail in with your fee. Easy enough, eh?We continue to include more Tech and Travel

Tips in the eNews. These are topics you’re not likely to see in most RV publications, but can be of interest and value. Last month it was George Harper on The Winegard Rayzar Antenna; this month Rod Kenly reviewing a car camera for RV application and yours truly reviewing Smart Home Technology for RVs, plus a safety report on CO devices. Next month state-of-the-art GPS . . . for free!

Your BoardFROM the SECRETARYby Eric Arnold

Rallies, rallies, & more rallies! This summer has been all about rallies for my family. It started with the Pass-port America Rally in Sedalia, MO, over the 4th of July weekend. Next we made our way to Shipshe-wana, IN, for the CCI Rally hosted by the Country Coach Heartlanders & shortly after that the FMCA Rally in Madison, WI. We have one more rally to go to and that is the Fulltime Families Rally in Branson, MO, starting just after Labor Day. It sure has been fun but I think we are going to be rallied out!

CCI and the Heartlanders put on an excellent rally. There were 33 coaches and not a minute was spared with all of the activities, tours, and meals planned. The Menno-HOF museum is a great place to learn how the Amish started, and their travels to America. The RV/Motorhome Hall of Fame was

cool, getting to see all of the very old RV’s and how far the industry has come from it’s beginnings. But you can’t talk about going to Amish country without talking about the food! Wow, was it good! The highlight of the week had to be when we took horse-drawn buggy rides to an actual Amish home and they cooked and served an Amish meal to all of us. There was so much food I needed a big-ger plate. And then they brought out the pies for dessert. Wow again! I think the horses definitely worked harder taking us back to the campground.

Country Coach International put on a meet and greet at the FMCA Rally in Madison, WI, and it was very well attended with a lot of new faces. Lee Zaborowski gave a presentation on the history and the state of CCI while the attendees enjoyed snacks and beverages. Hopefully the new faces will see the benefit of becoming CCI members!

Be safe and we hope to see you on the road! Eric Arnold

Using a Car Camera in Your Coach: A Product/Technology Reviewby Rod B. Kenly

FMCA Alternate National DirectorOne of the things I worry about is being hit by another driver. I’ve been cut off several

times, or had people pass and then slow down in front of me. Or they are talking on their cell phones, or doing whatever… Driving in congested traffic is a problem, and in many areas, there are those who “swoop and squat” – get in front of you and cause an accident – to get you to pay cash to keep from reporting it, or to get your insurance to pay for damage or to pay for “medical treat-ments,” etc.

I’ve been looking at car cameras for several years. They have come down a tremendous amount in price in recent years. Now you can capture in a very high quality format the action as you drive down the street. As a matter of fact, it is of “vacation” quality. But it can be evidence in the event of accident, document that someone pulled in front of you and slammed on the brakes, or someone that suffered from road rage.

I purchased one of these cameras last year at a booth at one of the FMCA events. Since our windshields are so big, I was able to mount it near the middle of the windshield, down low, where I could not see it from the driver’s seat (blocked by the dash), so it was out of the way.

It plugs into my cigarette lighter, and automatically starts recording when I start the coach, or when it senses movement (configurable). The video is stored on memory cards that are compatible with my lap-top/desktop computer. Each card will record 8 hours of data. I can either swap cards out at the end of each day, or transfer the data to my computer for later review, or just let it record over itself (erase) the next day.

So today, the police don’t have to be the only one that records what is going on, protect yourself. There are lots of video on YouTube that people have recorded on their car cameras of accidents happen-

ing in front of them or to them. This video can be given to police or lawyers or whatever.See you on down the road…

RV Inspector Warns RV owners about CO devices. May, 2015 in LetsRVThe National RV Inspectors Association warned RV owners to check the dates on the carbon mon-

oxide detectors because most are out of date.“In our work as RV inspectors, it is becoming apparent that there is a huge safety issue in our in-

dustry. In each RV unit inspected that is more than five years old, the carbon monoxide detector is typically out of date,” said Geoff Baker. “Their useful service life is five years. CO is the silent killer, so if you have any propane equipment on board or an onboard generator, do yourself a favor and check your CO detector date,” said Baker. “If it is over five years old, replace it. It could just save your life! Sometimes, the units are more than a year old when installed by the rig’s manufacturer, so if your rig is 2011 or older, check it today and replace it if necessary.”Checking the expiration is as simple as unscrewing the unit and looking for the date on the back

of the device. “While your at it, check the LP gas detector because it has a life expectancy of seven years,” he added. “Test it by using an UNLIT butane lighter. The device should alarm in 10-12 sec-onds. Also, check the fire/smoke detector because those have a life expectancy of 10 years. We use test smoke to test them. Regardless of the device, don’t forget to change the batteries while you are at it,” said Baker.

Cell Sign’s Smart Home Technology for RVsA Product/Technology Reviewby Lee ZaborowskiPresident, CCI

In the June CCI eNews I discussed Cell Sign’s basic ‘GSM Temperature Alerter’ unit, which I was putting through a trial test. Owner Eric Casebolt describes the product as the first mobile smart home in America.” It was a simple Plug-N-Play. There are two temperature sensors with a -10 to +50 Celsius range (14 to 122 Fahrenheit). The BUILT-IN sensor reads am-bient home temperature, while the external PLUG-IN sensor (at the end of a cord) reads inside the refrigerator. Everything worked as expected when I monitored it at home. The real test came while monitoring at the Shipshewana Rally during our 3 weeks on the road across the upper Midwest.

I can report that the Cell Sign Temperature Alerter’ unit worked flawlessly, reporting when ei-ther the ambient or refrigerator temperature had a significant fluctuation or whenever the tem-perature went out of the selected range. I ran the test on the temperature in our house, and frig, both located in O’Fallon, MO; while we were traveling in IN, IL, and WI.

I set the unit’s house temp range at 22 to 25 °C (72°F to 77°F). We had the A/C on while gone and the house temp never moved out of that range. You can send a message (simply text the unit ‘#01#’), which I did every AM and would get a report reply in a few seconds. Piece of cake. With the temp staying in range I knew the A/C was working as expected. A slow increase in temp would likely mean the A/C had failed. A sudden increase in temp would probably mean FIRE!

The frig was a bit more tricky because I had to learn the on/off cooling cycle behavior of the frig: (1) when you’re at home periodically opening/closing the frig door; and (2) when the door is closed for days at a time. The ideal range for us ended up being 0 to 9°C (32°F to 48°F). While on the road (door closed for extended periods) the frig operated full time in the 0 to 2 °C range. At home with daily frig use the temp bounce up and down in range but was usually around 3°C in the morning. I assume that going out of range, slowly climbing up would tell you the frig had failed or house power was off. At home it could also mean someone left the door open. As with the BUILT-IN unit I could query the unit and ask for the temp in the frig whenever I wish.

The original use of the unit was for monitoring the interior of your coach when you are away, for the day or while it is in storage (to monitor an operating frig for example). The Cellsign SimPal T2 - $119.00 (Plus Shipping). The cost is $12.50 for unlimited communication via an ac-tive T-Mobile sim card included with the SimPal. Any cellular phone with operate this device. I think this unit is a good investment and tool to have in operation if you are away from home for frequent extended periods, store your coach with the frig on, or have pets in the coach when you are out and about. FMCA ReportFMCA Governing Board MeetingWednesday, July 29, 2015, Madison, WI.by Jack CassinghamNational Director for CCIThere were 1,500 Family Member and Display coaches at Madison, WI, for the 92nd Annual FMCA

Convention, July 26 to August 1, 2015.As of May 31, 2015, the active membership count was 72,754 families. Membership decline con-

tinues to be a problem with a net loss of 3,837 families since June 2014. It remains the single most important area of focus for the association.

FMCAssist (Medical Evacuation Program/repatriation and travel assistance)This program was reinstated as an association-paid benefit last October 1st and is included in your

yearly dues. In the nine months since the reinstatement 43 member families have been helped with the lowest claim at $168 to the highest claim of $21,000. Most important issue to understand is that after calling 911 and obtaining medical help, the member must call FMCAssist at 1.877.202.4176 and the program will take care of everything necessary. It is administered by Seven Corners Insurance Company. Detailed information can be found at FMCA.SEVENCORNERS.com. This topic was so important FMCA had a seminar to explain the program.

Members should have all health information with them in their coach. Veterans should have a copy of their DD-214 with them.

Staples FMCA Member ProgramStaples and FMCA have partnered to offer exclusive discounts, lower pricing on every item, every

day. Also, lower minimums for free shipping.Beginning August 1, 2015 go to FMCA.com and follow the links to register for an online account.Future FMCA Family ReunionsThe 2016 Family Reunion will be held in Perry, GA, in March. The 2017 Convention will be held in

Does this coach show that Country Coach can still build a great motorhome, yes. If you like the CC Allure model you will probably like this coach.

OUTSIDEThe paint scheme is sub-dued and brown. Windows are flush with the outside. Window are tinted a dark smoke. Carefree awnings are now mounted on the roof, complete with LED light-ing. There are 3 LARGE stor-age bays with

side opening doors and sliding trays. The plumb-ing bay is the same, with some minor changes. Aqua Hot is the large model. The front end is an upgrade to have a heavier capacity. The generator is a 12.5 KW Onan, Engine is a 500 HP Cummins. The en-

gine compartment has been rear-ranged to be very service friendly. Engine service access is through the floor in the rear bath. Engine start batteries are now in the engine bay where they get fan driven air cooling. Tank capacities are similar to previ-ous Allure’s. The tag axel lift is now incorporated into a new panel.

INSIDEWood is oak with a dark brown stain, with a strong emphasis on matching brown fabrics and leathers. The dash now has a “Silverleaf Glass Dash”, with 3 camera views, which is nice.

There are well built cabi-nets and lots of storage, with adjustable shelves. Some cabinets have interi-or lighting. You’ll find a 2 Burner stove, a workable desk arrangement, and galley with dishwasher. Lighting is good and even throughout. Included are a washer and separate dryer, full tile floors with radiant heat, and carpet in sleeping area. Enjoy the giant TV on the wall, mid-coach. A large sliding door closes off the sleeping area and rear bath. Also enjoy the nice large size shower.
