Our 25th anniverSarY Year was a time to celebrate, and also to reflect

on a quarter century of connecting people to the aquatic world. While the

challenges to our marine ecosystems have grown since the national aquarium

in Baltimore opened its doors in 1981, our dedication and resolve to spark

stewardship has not. Behind the glass, the national aquarium in Baltimore is

now home to 16,000 amazing animals. Beyond the glass, the aquarium has

connected people locally to the Chesapeake Bay watershed and globally to

other critical aquatic habitats through education programs and work in the field.

this year was also a time of notable milestones. after exhaustive preparations

for a week-long inspection, the aquarium was once again accredited by the

association of Zoos and aquariums, confirming that we adhere to high standards

of animal care and display. volunteers provided an unprecedented level of service

(more than 113,000 hours); and the Marine animal rescue Program rehabilitated

and released its 75th stranded animal back to its ocean habitat.

these successes — and the many others described in this report — demonstrate

that the aquarium has evolved over the last quarter century, beyond its critical

early role as an economic engine for the City. today, we continue to take

great pride in attracting millions of visitors to the region but also in serving our

community as a cultural resource, an aquatic education center, and a steward of

the environment.

On the other side of the glass, there’s inspiratiOn

inspiratiOn AquARium on wheels is a driving force for the local

high school students who participate and for the community.

Year-round, this intensive work-study program puts dozens of Baltimore

youth on track for science careers, and sparks creativity, responsibility, and

self-sufficiency. Students use their knowledge to produce an original aquatic

stage show, and then take it on the road for performances at local libraries

each summer. With a living lab, laughter, and artifacts, the teens engage and

entertain City children, and their enthusiasm inspires another generation.

Teach Aquarium

the Aquarium continued to reach

an amazing number of students

in 2006. on the other side of the

glass, conservation education

programs, including a new series

for home-schooled students,

introduced almost 21,000 youth to

the aquatic world. staff extended

their reach even further by offering

professional development for more

than 1,000 teachers.

Web Works

the Aquarium’s web presence

took off in 2006. with more

than two million visitors and 12

million page views, traffic to the

Aquarium web site increased by

54% over 2005. online sales also

skyrocketed, with 50,000 tickets

valued at $3 million – an increase

of nearly 80% over the previous

performers to the Aquarium for the residents of our region.

throughout the series, author e.O. Wilson has revealed his latest research,

while entertainer-scientists like Bill nye have delighted children and animal

conservationists like Jack hanna have inspired action. the late Marjorie Lynn

Bank, an advisory Board member and photographer, leaves the simple

legacy that knowledge of the environment is a gift that must be shared.

the henRy hAll scholARship fund creates

a formula in which opportunity adds to success for

Baltimore youth.

now in its 25th year, this remarkable program offers annual scholarships

for excursions and learning labs, internships, and summer camps. College

scholarships even help fund science degrees. henry hall scholars receive

a chance to pursue their dreams, thanks to the legacy of the late african

american engineer. it’s living proof that one man’s foresight can educate

and inspire well beyond one lifetime.

Technology and Turtles

the marine Animal Rescue program

(thanks to generous support from

the herbert Bearman foundation,

inc. and shared earth foundation),

made use of technology to

engage the public in the story

of two special sea turtles. Both

ed, a loggerhead, and geddy, an

endangered kemp’s ridley, suffered

injuries from fishing gear and lines.

they were rehabilitated at the

Aquarium and, upon their release,

both were tracked with satellite

tags, allowing cyber visitors to

follow their progress down the

coast. ed’s latest position can be

tracked at aqua.org/tracked.

Australian Arts

cultural connections, a series

of dance, theater, art, and music

performances honoring Animal

Planet Australia, concluded with

the world debut of a new work

by Australia’s esteemed composer

peter sculthorpe. Baltimore

Songlines, commissioned by

the Aquarium and the embassy

of Australia, premiered with

the internationally acclaimed

Verdehr trio.

Funding for the Future

legislators gave a vote of

confidence for current and future

Aquarium initiatives: during

its 2006 session, the maryland

general Assembly approved a

$2.5 million grant for the center

for Aquatic life and conservation

and authorized a $59�,000 grant

from the maryland department

of education to provide free

educational programs to

maryland school children. By

dedicating $500,000 in capital

funds, Baltimore county council

and executive jim smith also

showed their support for the

Aquarium’s mission.

pRogRAm grows more than marsh grasses for the

chesapeake Bay.

it also cultivates our future naturalists. Students at 11 area middle schools

construct a brackish pond, maintain a healthy ecosystem, and raise

hundreds of seedlings and native fish. Daily monitoring and water quality

testing teach lessons for life and kindle the discovery that it’s within reach

to make a difference not just today, but tomorrow.

trails on land and water at

maryland’s eastern neck national

wildlife Refuge. the projects

Before ecosystems disappear, the Aquarium community

RestoRAtion pRojects, along with others like it, are

aimed at rebuilding Bay habitats using native grasses.

aquarium staff partner with State and Federal naturalists to organize the aid

of as many as 1,000 conservation-minded volunteers. through 10,000 hours

planting half a million seedlings, average citizens have transformed these

important landscapes of the eastern Shore. hope for our planet is buoyed

when grassroots efforts turn the tide.

Silver Celebration

After 25 years of commitment to

the community, it was time for the

Aquarium to celebrate. A silver

anniversary ceremony and mayoral

proclamation on August 8, 2006

kicked off 25 days of aquatic-

inspired events and activities for

visitors, including free movies on

the pier under the stars, animal

encounters with an Australian

theme, treasure hunts and talks,

and a book signing.

Milestones for MARP

the marine Animal Rescue

program (mARp) marked its 15th

Anniversary with the successful

release of its �5th rehabilitated

animal. last year alone, mARp

staff and volunteers responded

to 30 calls about sick or injured

animals stranded in the wild. they

also educate groups, participate in

outreach events, and conduct an

annual dolphin count.

Free Fall Baltimore

through free fall Baltimore,

a new city arts initiative, the

Aquarium offered the community

increased access to the

underwater world. more than

1,000 city residents received

tickets for a free evening at the

Aquarium thanks to a grant

from the Baltimore office of

promotion and the Arts, as well

as complimentary bus passes

through the support of the

maryland transit Authority.

the VolunteeR pRogRAm gives the Aquarium its

human side. nearly 1,800 committed volunteers donated

more than 113,000 hours of their time and many of their

talents to bring the Aquarium to life before visitors’ eyes.

volunteers do almost every job imaginable – from taking care of animals

(even if it requires an underwater dive) to serving as exhibit guides. Specially

trained high school volunteers educate, entertain, and inspire. through their
