On the history of downright This is a diachronic study based on the degree function of an intensifier. In this study is about the origin and the development of the intensifiers. The origin of a word can offer us information about the semantic changes and the context in which them apper. It examined the case of the intensifier downright. The intensifier downright is treated as adverb and adjective. The study on the early English proves that downright has functioned as a spatial adjunct. Its spatial role still exist in Modern English.
