On the front line of the R&D revolution
The Grimaldi Group is riding a wave of rapid technological change powered by research and development. Automisa-tion, digitalisation and the development of
emission-reduction technology will help push our industry towards a low-carbon future.
FINNLINES, WITH ITS ADVANTAGEOUS POSITION at the heart of the Scandinavian high-tech cluster, is both contributing to and benefiting from this revolu-tion.
For a case in point, take the three ice-class newbuildings earmarked for Finnlines from the Group-wide orderbook. Not only will they be among the largest ro-ros in the North Sea and Baltic, they will also benefit from battery technology currently being installed on two Group cruise-ferries in the Mediterranean: vessels that will boast zero emis-sions in port because they rely entirely on batteries recharged while underway.

On the front line of the R&D revolution
Technology is not a standalone solution.
Emanuele GrimaldiCEO
able Shipping Forum, an EU platform for elaborat-ing environmental solutions for our industry. We are also one of the 4 shipowners which founded the Global Industry Alliance (GIA), a new public-private partnership initiative of the world-level IMO organisation that aims to bring together maritime industry leaders to support an energy efficient and low carbon maritime transport system.
IN VALENCIA, tugboats powered by hydrogen fuel cells are already interacting with our traffic. If this technology can be scaled up, hydrogen-based fuel could trigger a total redesign in engines, bringing online the first carbon-neutral ships.
TECHNOLOGY is of course not a standalone solu-tion. Fuel savings are also the result of better man-agement. That’s why we apply environmental ship index calculations to measure our green footprint, using key performance indicators related to hy-drodynamics, punctuality, speed and trim, among other criteria. Without such measurements, there is no way of knowing if we are making progress.
WE TRY TO ENSURE this energy-saving mentality permeates throughout the company. At internal meetings, routes, rotations and timetables are often re-examined to see if there is a more efficient option. We instruct masters on the best trim set-tings for certain manoeuvres. As for data, we are trying to increase its relevance by moving towards real-time monitoring: of gang performance, for example, ship speed profile, fuel consumption, propulsion power and other general parameters related to energy consumption.
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS developed by Finnlines often become examples for the rest of our Group. Finnlines has a patent for a unique set of cargo equipment that allows faster loading and unloading, thereby reducing time in port, and pollution. In Hel-sinki, electricity now powers straddle carriers; this technology is ready to be rolled out to other ports.
Finnlines can also take advantage of Group economies of scale to optimise itineraries and consumption, while maintaining cargo flexibility and passenger comfort.
OUR NEWBUILDS – part of a EUR 600 million invest-ment programme that includes vessel lengthen-ing and retrofits – are set to rejuvenate the fleet further: younger ships bring higher environmental standards.
The lengthened units will reduce CO2 emissions on a tonne/kilometre basis. The vessel re-blading programme, which helps ensure we do not con-sume more fuel than we should, has already had a similar, positive effect.
Happy reading!
THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE PROJECTS that will contrib-ute to the fight against climate change by reducing consumption and thereby keeping bunker costs under control. To mention another case, Finnlines is today about to order a ro-pax series which will set a new standard in their sector for reducing C02 emission per tonne/kilometre. In order to reach this target we are looking into hybrid solutions, batter-ies, LNG as fuel, as well as the increased use of shoreside electricity, sometimes known as ‘cold ironing’.
ON R&D SIDE, meanwhile, we are supporting sev-eral European Union projects such as “H2ports” for hydrogen fuel cell technology application to port operations and “Leanships” on energy saving development through propeller pitch optimisation. By sharing knowledge across Europe, we can learn from best practice and accelerate the pace of change. The Grimaldi Group is one of only five ship-owners participating in the European Sustain-

Stepping into an authentic LUX cabinFinnlines attracted visitors at the biggest travel fair in Scandinavia.
The biggest travel event in Northern Eu-rope, the MATKA Nordic Travel Fair 2019 and Caravan 2019 attracted over 61,000 travellers to Helsinki’s Messukeskus Expo and Convention Centre in January. 988 ex-hibitors from 86 different countries took part in the event, including Finnlines. The fair of-fered ideas for holiday trips and affordable travel deals. According to a study made by Kantar TNS a third of the visitors said they would book a trip based on the information they received at the fair.
At the Finnlines stand visitors’ travel and destination-related questions were an-swered by our team. All four service points were in hard use with visitors booking af-
fordable ferry trips for spring and summer. The LUX cabin of the Star-class vessels that was on display on the second floor took many visitors by surprise and spurred them to get better acquainted with Finnlines through videos and virtual reality headsets. Our team at the fair answered all questions and gave useful tips for easy travelling on a ro-pax vessel. The newly updated information-packed brochure received a lot of attention. During the four days at the fair, nearly 4,000 brochures and Finnlines’ giveaway bags were handed out.
Finnlines also stepped out of their own stand to once again organise a putting competition for the smaller visitors at the nearby Archipelago Sea common area. All participants were rewarded with a Finnlines safety vest. Little yellow-vested visitors were sighted here and there during the public fair days.
Giveaway bags and soft ice cream were offered to visitors, bringing a smile to everybody’s face.
Star Club Loyalty Program has more
than 55,000 members and the Driver’s Card
program for truck drivers has members in
the thousands.

Star Club Loyalty Program – Convenient and easyAt this year’s fair the visitors were introduced to the completely renewed Finnlines loyalty program Star Club. A year ago the program’s visual appearance was revamped and during the summer of 2018 the operating system was updated to meet today’s demands.
The basis for the update was to make the system more convenient for both club members and Finnlines personnel. The program was designed to be intuitive and easy to use.
The new system is easy to use on various platforms, includ-ing mobile platforms, and is naturally up to par with all GDPR requirements. Club members can check and edit their personal details in the membership portal and view member-only offers and benefits. On request members receive a detailed summary of how and by whom their personal details have been reviewed or altered. Members also have the right to be forgotten, so that when they cancel their membership all personal data related to the membership will be permanently removed.
The updates have been well received and new members have joined the Star Club. At the moment, the consumer-targeted Star Club Loyalty Program has more than 55,000 members and, op-erating in the same system, the Driver’s Card program for truck drivers has members in the thousands.

Transporting project cargo, ”high and heavy” – focus on safety and quality
Project cargo, or special cargo, refers to units which are challenging to stow and secure on board ships. Cargo classi-fied as project cargo comes in all sizes, shapes and weights. Each carriage is a new project, which must be planned,
executed and supervised properly by specialists. The same concept cannot be copied as requirements and means of transport change when cargo, route, ship, port of loading and discharging change.
Special cargo can be catecorized in many ways. Timo Vanhala, Cargo Superintendent at Finnlines, lists five main categories for special cargo in Finnlines
traffic: “We transport regularly breakbulk cargo, which is stowed on rolltrailers. Self-driven units in project cargo refer to large or heavy machines, like excavators, wheel loaders or mining machines. A low loader means that the unit is carried in the customer’s trailer. Low loaders have a special structure and more axles than semitrailers and rolltrailers, which allows transportation of very large or heavy cargo that cannot be transported in any other way on ro-ro ships. Long or high units which cannot be carried on the main deck on a roll-trailer can be loaded on the weather deck. High value cargo units come last but not least as they are often sensitive and expensive, like helicopters or yachts.”
Cargo classified as project cargo comes in all sizes, shapes and weights. Each carriage is a new project.
9
DETAILS ARE IMPORTANTTo ensure a safe sea voyage, it is necessary to have a detailed description of special cargo goods. “We ask for copies of drawings, pictures or other indications to find cargo descriptions, weight, length, width and height. Footprint, position of centre of gravity and cargo securing arrangements are important information when evaluating and planning cargo loading. Photos are always useful”, Timo Vanhala explains. “We check that the cargo transport unit, which is a rolltrailer in most cases, ship’s ramp and cargo decks withstand the load. The infrastructure in port must also be considered and that is why we contact the local Finnlines specialist or go on site, make measurements and double-check instructions and arrangements.”
Customers should remember that conditions for road and sea transport differ greatly. At sea, goods shall be prevented from sliding and tipping in sideways, forward and backward directions by adequate means. Cargo needs to be seaworthy and safe to handle in the port of loading and discharging.
Timo Vanhala emphasizes that all parties involved in the transport chain should work as a seamless team to ensure safe operations. The team includes customers, sales, Finnlines cargo handling, customer service and stevedores. As the last back up, the chief officer and master (captain) judge the seaworthiness of cargo units and, if in any doubt, make actions to improve safety. Neither safety and nor quality can be compromised.
Units challenging to stow and secure on board ships are defined as project cargo.
Finnlines carries different categories of special cargo: breakbulk cargo, self-driven units, low loaders, long or high units as well as high value cargo units.
