The geolocation of MWR L1B brightness temperature (Tb) measurements is assessed by comparing MWR Tb image of land with high-resolution maps. When the antenna beam IFOV’s pass over a land/water boundary, brightness temperature changes from a radiometrically hot land scene to a cold ocean scene, and the MWR-”observed” coastline is determined by the maximum Tb slope location. A system of linear equations is produced at each observed land/water crossing to determine the true intersection of the MWR track with the coastline. The difference between observed and true land/water crossings are the geolocation error distance. Results, presented for all MWR beams/chans, show that the geolocation errors are typically < 5 km.

Conclusions
Preliminary results indicate that L1B geolocation errors meet MWR spec (< 5 km overall)
Results sorted by: - Beam#/Channel
• Even and odd beams for 24H and 37V&H are similar
- Ascending/descending passes • No significant differences – as expected
- Water-to-land and land-to-water crossings • Not consistent in all 3 channels – requires further
investigation
- latitude of land/water crossing • Some systematic differences for 37V channel
- Angle of intersection w/r to coastline • Some minor differences – requires further investigation
